RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!

I wonder if we're going to reach the visual peak of violence in games any time soon.

Personally I find the throat cutting scene disgusting. How juvenile do people have to be to find that appealing?

the animations from fallout 1 are WAY more violent than anything in that trailer, and fallout 1 wasn't even approaching "too violent" for my tastes.

the bottle killing scene in Pan's Labyrinth was maybe getting closer to the line of "too violent", but i haven't seen anything in a video game that i thought was sickeningly violent. the airport scene in COD MW 2 was a little disturbing, not in the violence of it per se, but more that the developers thought including it was a great idea.

Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete.

Fallout 1's animations are quite obviously a joke that didn't strive for realism - because you know, guns don't actually blow people up.

This trailer features an in your face portrayal of the main character slitting someone's throat done so for the sole reason of making the player feel powerful, innocent people burning to death (this is what that looks like in real life

) and rats eating corpses solely for shock value. Its porn for teenagers.

That said, I do want to see a gameplay video before condemning the game totally.

И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,
И његова сва изгибе војска,
Седамдесет и седам иљада;
Све је свето и честито било
И миломе Богу приступачно.

That's shock value for you.

Another assassin's creed, but in a completely ridiculous, detached from all sci-fi and historical realities. A melting pot of completely random and unrelated ideas.

Why, you gotta be 12-17, their core audience of course.

Yeah, I mean, a game from the creators of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah. Also having the lead designer of Deus Ex 1 and the art director of Half Life 2 involved. All of them citing their passion for Thief ans such.

I mean, DAY 1 PURCHASE!!!!

They can cite as many passions as they want. Do you see any passion in Bethesda Publisher for good games lately? After 2005 (Call of Cthulhu) they pretty much sold out to the teens and pre-teens. They haven't made/published a decent game in 6 years. And they're not about to. It'd be unprofitable, and game industry is all about maximizing the profit with these guys.

p.s. No game is bad enough for you not to buy it, isn't it?

If "short little movie things" weren't supposed to represent the general ideas like in this case the ridiculous world setting and the astounding level of scenario simplicity (go kill that guy, but don't prepare or anything, just go ahead and get caught as much as possible, etc), I wouldn't say anything. But they make them to actually do just that.

whenever i see short little movie things advertising games, they rarely represent what you'll find the gameplay to be like.

anyone remember the dragon age or deus ex HR or star wars TOR movie advertisements?

yeah soooo much gameplay within a pre-rendered cg trailer made by an outside company for the pr department of a game publishing house

I don't remember Dragon Age trailers, but Deus Ex 3 and SWTOR trailers represented pretty well the world and the general gameplay ideas. As does this trailer. You can hate it, but it does its job, gets the message across. That's why I preemptively consider this game ****ty and dumb.

so wait, are there any gameplay videos for dishonoured yet?

what if its a turn based strategy game? will the outsourced cg advertisement be indicative of the gameplay?

Watch the developer interviews. They have explained the kind of game they're making to death.

Marketing is just about to start now, so expect actual gameplay videos soon-ish (~E3 / Quakecon).

what if its a turn based strategy game?

Have you seen many POV trailers packed with action, where one man is clearly on a personal mission, and when the game turned out to be a turn based strategy? It's 101 of trailer making, you don't do these things.

Same as you don't make action packed trailers for musical dramas in movies industry.

Same as you don't advertise sugar with people talking about their type 2 diabetes.

I could give a million examples...

i think you're confusing a trailer for a movie, which includes footage of the movie, with a cg promo for a game, which includes no footage of the game.

REALLY, SERIOUSLY...YOU'RE CALLING THIS DLC????

Street Fighter X Tekken dev 'disappointed' in DLC being hacked

The kicker...the "DLC" wasn't actually downloadable...it was already on the disk. It just wasn't unlocked...hence why it could be hacked.

Maybe companies should stop holding back content they've already made in their desires to make a quick buck. Then again, I think they bled me dry with Marvel vs. Capcom already.
