Been trying to figure out this puzzle - but my mathematical prowess is sadly underwhelming.

- A woman buys x flowers for y dollars (both are whole numbers) as she leaves the shop the manager says "if you buy 10 flowers more I'll give you all of it for 2$, that way you'll save 0.80 cent a dozen".

Fortune favors the bald.

The closest I came was one of the few times I got black out drunk in public years ago.

I later got told there were 13 tequilla shots, and someone thought it would be funny to switch the last one for a double rum on me when I wasn't noticing.

I remember a very clear image of looking at my watch saying 10:13pm, and saying to the guys "no, I don't really have enough money on me tonight to go around several more places"

Then it's blank.

I stirred into consciousness at home, my parents looking at me rather disagreeably, letting me know that a> my friend graham had propped me up in the door at some point, and that b> it was 7am, and I had to go to work at the hospital for the morning shift.

Which started at 7.30am, and went on till 2.30. Hospital kitchen porter. Among other things, pushing the hospital food trolleys out from the kitchen up to the wards and collecting them.

That was... a fun day.

My strongest hangover recollection is from the night I'd turned in my master's thesis. I had a couple of friends who'd been RIF'd from an IT company and had just gotten their golden parachutes. I still vividly remember every part of the night, as well as the feeling the next morning. The old joke about holding onto the bed with both hands so that you don't fall off? It was that morning and a better part of the day. My mother brought me some local finnish orange soda widely known for it's hangover curative powers... at around 5pm, after she'd left work. These days, I mostly have a finger or two of single malt, like today with my parents.

Instead of getting analysis paralysis or going into unrequited love mode with the economist, I'm just gonna ask for a drink next week, so I can get immediately shot down and keep my mind on the work. The amount of which is starting to pick up rapidly, but I've worked a lot more for considerably less, so can't really complain. Still pretty far from my comfort zone, to say the least.

I'm cleaning up the kids room, which is a bit overwhelming. I'm throwing out quite a few little things, which will make some space for the Christmas presents. The biggest hurdle is all the clothes, we received a huge amount of boxes from my sisters for my son, and I need to box up what doesn't fit and put away what he hasn't grown into.

We've been running a humidifier for a about a week while the kids fought off a cough, and I found some goldfish (the crackers) under my daughter's bed that had mildewed. It was pretty gross.

I came up with the following equation to solve: 120x=(x+10)(60y-4x)

Whole numbers don't work, possible solution is

x=10

y=5/3

Old price 1/6$, for a dozen this makes 2$

Nieuw price 0.1$, for a dozen this makes 1.2$

EDIT: x=5, y=1 work as well and are actually whole numbers. R00fles!

Hm kept ending up with 1 equation, 2 unknowns. Oh well, beaten to the punch anyway.

Last month's CAT scan show that my cancer was reponding ( reducing in size ) to the chemo meds. Yesterday, the new scan shows that the cancer in my liver has tripled in size. Getting a little annoyed at this. I get good news and start feeling like I might have a 'regular' life and someone kicks me in the ass.

Celebrated Yule on Saturday. The wife's son and his wife and the two grandkids came over to spend the evening ( and get their gifts :lol:) . Wife made up a meal of all sorts of good stuff. A large ribeye roast that was so tender I didn't need a knife to eat it. Got a large slice on it almost eaten when I had to run to puke it up. Spent the rest of the day sleeping. Doing that a lot lately. Between the nausea and fatigue I'm not getting much social time in. Still working 40 hours a week. That's a plus.

On the bright side, I have an old POS laptop. A P3 333Mh with 256 Mb RAM that has no ethernet port and 1 USB 1.1 port. What a prize eh? I know you guys are jealous of it. I pretty much just use it to play games on when I'm on the go. Found a wireless gizmo that would actually load and be recognized by the computer. This laptop won't recognize a USB flash drive above 8 Gb. Now I can go online next time I'm in the hospital and not mess with their frigging website censors. Michael Jackson porn here I come!

Oh man, that ribeye sounded good.

I don't know if it will help you, but my mother used to drink fresh root ginger tea to settle her stomach. Plenty of lemon to give it a kick, nearly as good as a hot toddy.

Of course I also suspect that she often skimped on her meds. So it may not be enough to help you. ;) I'm not mad at her though. She was the boss, so if she couldn't face the meds, then I'm certainly not going to accuse her of anything.

This cancer in the liver business is interesting. You've already mentioned that chemo is weak because liver cells are designed to process chems. And you've already had surgery... What do your docs say? Any novel methods parked up?

But it should be possible to do this with whole numbers.. or so I've been told

good equation though.

x=5

y=1

That.. is .. it!!

Haha, I'm a little annoyed I didn't figure it out of course, but good on ya o:)

The company gave everybody the friday off, which essentially doubled the days off I get on account of christmas. Next week is going to be interesting, mostly because everybody at work has basically started during the past year, so it's me and 10 recent uni graduate girls. Kind of wish I hadn't learned to keep my paws of girls I have to work with, there's basically just the one who meets the "I only have to see her at the cafeteria if this goes south" test. o:)

Wish I could just unwind with a few really close people, but have to go to my cousin's for the eve. They'd qualify otherwise, but the material and gastronomic hysteria is just too much for me. :ermm:

Talked with my brother, and it would appear that I'm going to get a free iphone 4 from him with a warranty on it. Just gotta pay the bill. For getting rid of my old plan and the activation fee etc.

Cancer Doc is trying to get emergency insurance approval to try a new med tomorrow. It's an IV drip unfortunately so I'll possibly be spending a couple of hours each Friday getting an IV. I guess the alternative could be worse. :wink:

Christmas shopping!

I have a philosophy. Holidays are supposed to be relaxing. Don't stress the gifts. So, Disaronno for everyone except those who shouldn't or don't drink. Best Buy giftcards for them.

I'm assuming its some horrendous med which the liver can't metabolise? :)

Fighting spirit still seems high. Immense kudos.

However, make sure you take time out to chill over Christmas if you can. You're fighting a war and you need time out of the line, physically and psychologically. If you can coonvince the nearest and dearest to pretend you aren't sick* for a couple of days we found that it helped.

One of the few things we still actually do as a family is to gather around the tree, divide the presents up into various piles and then open them all together.

Of course, this morning, as we divide up the piles.. the neighbour turns up, blithely ignores whats going on, sits down and talks.. and talks... and talks...

Unless you've had to adopt a family like my aunt. They have the nuclear family festivities, but then invite the neighbors over because that family is cut off from their relatives due to stupid things said.

Well, am inviting the waifs and strays around tomorrow. Friends on their own or away from home for Christmas. I miss the buggers after about a week not seeing anyone, to be honest. Family are all well and good. But (and maybe this is boarding school talking) your friends are your real family, I think.

Family now taken over almost whole house. So am kipping in my office. I have a sleeping bag nestled up beside a filing cabinet. I love it. It's like camping, only awesome. I am incredibly tempted to move in permanently.
