Went to Prague last week.

Surely a beautiful city, but all in all it was a bit of a disappointment compared to my previous trip to Barcelona. The facades were nice at first, but after a while they did get a bit boring. I don't think I'll find a city soon that equals the pure awesomeness that is Barcelona. There was just so much more to do there other than enjoying the scenery. I'm a bit of a museum freak, and Prague didn't have too many, at least besides religious places which I prefer to avoid (especially Catholic ones).

You should go to the Vatican then, I bet you'll feel right at home.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Outside the US I'd have to say Taegu is the RoK is my favorite. In the US you can't beat Honolulu, actually all of Oahu is great. San Diego, and Bozeman Montana, and the Tampa Bay area (Tampa, St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Clearwater) are all tied for second in my book.

The only European city I've ever been to is Frankfurt and I was only there overnight so I really could not say how I like it. It looked nice from the air. I'd love to see London, Rome, and Ireland (all of it) someday.

I've been to many cities in Asia, Japan and the Philippenes but I can't honestly say I loved any of them except Hiji in Okinawa but it is not really a city. Tokyo is a sight to see for sure but it was WAY too big and hectic for me. And expensive in the extreme. Of course the exchange rate was lousy then and I was in the military so I did not have a lot of money. I've been to two small cities in Saudi Arabia and a few in Kuwait including Kuwait City bit it was not a good time for them if you know what I mean.

If you love museums and beauty try Florence. London is also an excellent choice for Museum lovers.

Try Budapest, Stockholm, and Rome as well.

Stockholm

Stockholm is probably to most historically interesting city in Scandinavia (at least from 1600+) - with many buildings from the 16th century and up still preserved. Copenhagen is good if you want a more provincial big-city feel, but you need a local to help you find the good spots.

I'd also recommend Warsaw or other old cities in Poland, there are some very beautiful cities and many interesting sites (especially WW2 related).

Tallinn is nice, as is Helsinki, I particularly like Seattle and Vancouver from the time I've spent over in the Pacific Northwest.

As for UK cities, definately not London ewwww Not keen on London, York is very nice, probably my favourite UK city.

I came up with Crate 3.0 technology.

Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.

The City I liked best for the people, hands down, was Juneau, Alaska.

For me, that city was Santiago Chile. The people were so incredibly nice that the suspicious side of me kept waiting to get shanked in the ribs.

Awesome. I've been wondering about Chile. Now I shall have to go.

^It was really eye opening. See for the most part, where ever a carrier battle group pulls into for shore leave on a regular basis, the locals tolerate 5000 sailors streaming off the boat to defile their town because we dumped a lot of coin. In Chile, the locals loved us just because we were American (and probably because we were the first carrier there in 20 years or something so we hadnt worn out our welcome yet, lol). They lined the piers where the liberty boats would pull in and waved and cheered. I remember a nice couple, upon seeing my friends and I struggling to read a Spanish language menu got up from their meal and came over to help us order...then bought us drinks! Oh, and the women are drop dead gorgeous. Great country, I highly recommend it.

am assuming you is talking europe, no? you is a museum freak but you wanna avoid the catholic? what a shame, regardless o' religious concerns, rome & vatican city is must-see destinations for any lover o' art... along with london and paris.

personally, Gromnir enjoyed valencia mostest. if we had to live in europe again, we would probable choose valencia. the city of arts and sciences is kewl, but we enjoyed valencia even before the art complex were built in the mid 90's. former roman city that surrendered to the moors w/o a fight, so much of old roman architecture remains. similar, you gots influences from arab, baroque and gothic architecture throughout the city. is probable 1/2 size of barcelona and is equidistant from both barcelona and madrid... makes it am ideal starting point from which to visit either location. good seafood, and the peoples is a bit more laid-back and friendly than in the more populous locales... although we enjoyed virtual all o' spain... in spite o' an endemic and pronounced academic provincialism.

even so, you does yourself a disservice to avoid rome if you is a museum freak.

HA! Good Fun!

:) Ironically my own contact with Chile has been through meeting some Chilean naval officers. Very professional, very very relaxed.

I've been to Valencia. Liked it a lot. As well as London and Paris, but those were a while ago and I do need to revisit them soon.

Haven't seen Rome yet, but indeed, I will have to do so.

I loved Prague and Venice. Rome is great as well.

Vienna, although splendid, left me cold.

Florence is nice for the art lover, dunno why I wasn't taken with it all that much.

Verona didn't really impress me all that much.

The most important thing in my experience is to be well informed and see any city on your own terms - avoiding being part of a large tourist group which will rush you through all the sights.

In short, don't visit the city you're dying to see until you have the cash to do it at your leisure.

Better not to visit at all than to barge through everything.

Also I've heard St. Petersburg praised by everyone whose ever been there.

also, while not a major art hotspot, we got a particular soft-spot for gdansk. we like to cook. was a habit o' ours when we were younger to pester cooks/chefs for their recipes. eat something good at a restaurant or diner and we would come back during slow hours and ask to be educated on preparations. got told "no" lots. got told "yes" lots in gdansk. spent an extra week there just 'cause the cooks and chefs were so friendly and helpful... although polish cuisine often requires DAYS o' preparation, so we frequent gots kinda footnotes versions o' recipes. learned many pro cooking tricks too.

gdansk has much o' the typical eastern european touristy stuff; lots o' churches. too bad for pope. although the architecture in gdansk almost makes you think you were in the neatherlands. sorry, is not the sex and drugs that would be so readily available in neatherlands. 'course there is also the annual shakespeare festival, which is pretty darn kewl... is held late july and early august if memory serves. much o' the performances were done in english.
