I figured this would be a handy thread to have (and I searched, but couldn't find one) for all aspiring Game Designers. Post any interesting articles on game design here so we can always find them again.

 

I'll kick off the bat (pretty sure this is not an expression and I am committing animal cruelty here) with The 400 Game Design Rules Master List. The url is a bit misleading, it says best FREE game engines for game developers which is not exactly true, though some of them are and it's worth looking at for those who want to make their own games.

I've recently watched all the "Extra Credits" videos on The Escapist, and honestly, they offer such an in depth look at video games that I think they qualify as helpful resources for developers.

I'd hoped someone would have answered this by now, because I can't. I don't know how normal commercial applications get developed. I'm just an animation monkey.

 

EDIT: You know, I debated adding this because it's right on top of this board, but I really think that one of the best starting points for beginning game developers is Sawyer's Tips For Modmaking. http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?showtopic=8168 Props to Sawyer, who is completely awesome.

The No Twinkie Database by Ernest Adams (who is a fantastic public speaker). It's a list of errors games make that make him go "BAD GAME DESIGNER! NO TWINKIE FOR YOU!"
