the games are in order of my personal taste (ie favorite games to lesser favorites) the number corresponds to what score I would have given the game when I first completed it (thus the scores are intended to be in context for the games year of release etc so graphics and interface issues would only be compared to contemporaries and what had come before. This explains why oblivion has such a high score (a 92) because I only noticed its more severe flaws after multiple playthroughs.

also note, i change these all the time.

All right I'll do it again. But this time I'm only giving the Very Short Version:

Diablo1/Diablo2 (also like a lot of the clones, even if not huge all-time "faves")

Tombraider1

Lords of the Realm2

Casear3 & to a much lesser extent, Casear4

Dungeon Keeper 1

Might & Magic7 (the rpg, not the strategy)

Stronghold1/Crusader

KOTOR2

Borderlands

FO:NV

...I"ve played quite a few other story-RPG's & many many other games in all genres (and enjoyed most of them at the time), but most don't fall into my 'really big faves' pile because I rarely actually replayed them or in many cases, never quite finished them. :)

@Gizmo

Shadow of the Colossus is miles beyond anything else and falls squarely into the art category.

As a PC gamer I find it hard to admit, but there has never been a game like it on the PC. Not by a long shot.

I'll have to play it then, if I find the chance.

Just for something different I'll subvert my list by making it a list of the oldest games I remember playing - bearing in mind that they'd be been released before I discarded my nappies. They must have been memorable because they were good, and I submit qualify for the appelation 'favourite.' Don't recall specifically which was the first, but anyhow:

Alley Cat - I have an enduring fear/hatred of disembodied brooms

Pitstop 2 - I remember panicking whenever the wheels changed colour indicating wear, having no idea how to make a pitstop

Winter Games - I remember mashing the keyboard and being very happy when my figure skater managed to jump

All in glorious (four) colour graphics. I admit I had to Google the actual game titles, having remembered only the stunning graphics.

Now, I may not have known how to play these titles at the time, but then neither do I know how to play most games released this year.

I always hate this question. It's a battle between reality and nostalgia to me. I could tell you "Xenogears is my favorite game of all time," but is it really? Could I actually play through it again? What effect does the passage of time have on the status as "favorite?" Should a game I've played so many times I can't play it again be on the list? Should a game that was my favorite at the time, but has failed to pass the test of time be on the list? What about a game I've played recently, but has yet to even meet the challenge of time? How can I objectively figure out the difference between the three?

How many games am I tempted to put forth simply because I enjoyed and lots of others claim to be their favorite? Did I really enjoy Bloodlines that much, even though it was over a year before I got a complete playthrough? Do I even remember finding Planescape: Torment that charming?

This is the best I can give.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade

Final Fantasy VII

Legend of Dragoon

Xenogears

Xenosaga: Episode III

Persona 3: FES

Persona 4

Neverwinter Nights 2

Mask of the Betrayer

Dragon Age: Origins

Fallout: New Vegas

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines

Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal

Elder Scrolls III: Morrwind

Tales of Monkey Island

Time Crisis 2

Warcraft 3

I agree wholeheartedly with Tale's disclaimer paragraph. I try to focus on games that have stood the test of time well, and ones drive by original ideas that have proven influential. But then I end up excluding recent releases.

The top of the list that hit on all of these are probably, in some order or another:

Railroad Tycoon

Civilizations 2 & 4

Alpha Centauri

Fallout

Planescape: Torment

Portal

There are plenty more games that I have really enjoyed, but it gets tough for me to differentiate once I get below the ones I consider truly superlative.

For me I tend to use the "would I want to replay it" as opposed to COULD I actually replay it. There are a few favorite games that I have tried to play that I loved but find a chore to play through now (most of the IE games, to be honest) but that doesn't mean that I don't still occasionally say to myself "hey, I kinda want to play IWD again!).

I love Xenogears and think I could play it again. It should have been on my list.

Talk about over-analysing. Just name the game that's been the most fun for you. Why would it have to be replayable now? What influence does that have on the experience it was?
