Fallout: New Vegas

They said they didn't make many improvements to the visual engine but if you watch those E3 videos you'll see they imbued Gamebryo with cutting-edge PV (projectile vomit) rendering capabilities.

 

Hey Josh, if it's not too much to ask, could you throw in some type of weapon that causes enemies to vomit? Like the V:TMB Blood Purge, but in gun form.

 

Great now I'm imagining a portable, directional infrasound generator (since infrasound has been claimed to cause things like vomiting, uncontrolled bowel movements, lung collapses and heart arrhythmia...)

There was actually a similar weapon in Fallout Tactics called the Spasm Gun, induced massive nerve damage. It was an energy weapon, as I recall. Nasty would-be crowd control that I'm sure major city police departments would love to have in actuality.

Fallout: New Vegas lead Josh Sawyer has dropped a hint about a unique weapon in the game on Facebook. He first posted about unique weapons in general:

 

you know, placing unique weapons will never get old for me. i've been doing it since icewind dale and it's endlessly satisfying.

 

As a followup questions, he was asked "Placing them? You mean, like, on the mantel?", to which he responded:

 

pretty much. but instead of a mantle, it's some dusty post-apocalyptic shack on a hill with a john boorman's excalibur-esque skeleton kneeling in prayer next to a sniper rifle.

Pale Justice with some humorous twists? :)

 

This reminded me of something Avellone wrote like "Sawyer relies on the power of religion in his writings". IMHO, his writings often play as modest small episodes or for ambiances. Indeed, they cannot play in the center of the main story but, this is probably the best usage. It's like coming across a small and simple chapel in a small village without expectation rather than visiting a world-famous cathedral.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean Pale Justice is something "humble" as it's appearance...the stats rather indicate it's a wet dream of any munchikin....well, after all, he is responsible for the Heart of Fury mode...

. What I found most interesting was not the ammunition and other loot that could be had, but the notes that I found and added to my Pip-Boy. Some notes were letters written to loved ones, while others were journal entries that NCR members had been writing just before being surrounded and subsequently killed by the Caesar's Legion. Avellone explained that the notes in Fallout: New Vegas are intended mostly for flavor, though there will obviously be some that yield useful information (such as codes to locked doors). As a fan of little lore-inducing elements like this, it was a welcome sight

 

Nice.

 

The game is already content complete and looking pretty polished, so I don't foresee any reason why we won't be experiencing over 150 hours of post-nuclear entertainment when the game ships on October 19th.

 

Really nice. As shallow as it may sound, a nice, polished game from Obsidian is just what I need.

I don't mind the casino games being minigames, I think that'll fit in pretty good. But I found it sorta lame that they showed it off in the E3 presentation, because really... Roulette, Blackjack, Slots. Yeah, we know about these things... Why show them off?

Because finding a flash blackjack game in impossible these days.

 

Useless gimmicks...

The difference is you either play for nothing or for real money, neither of which I'm interested in doing. In a game, you play for in-game money, which suddenly makes that activity meaningful. Ever play One-hit in Shenmue or Pazaak in Kotor?

Well for me it was more like 'we're showing The Strip.. you see? different from Fallout 3, right?', so it was just a natural consequences that they'd show the casino minigames.

Don't forget that they showed things like the casino bouncer taking weapons, the use of sneak to.. well.. sneak a couple of weapons in the casino, the fact that you can 'break' them etc..

Don't forget that they showed things like the casino bouncer taking weapons, the use of sneak to.. well.. sneak a couple of weapons in the casino, the fact that you can 'break' them etc..

 

Still, it was a pretty bland presentation. I don't think it reached the target audience in the optimal way. Should have shown more combat - melee vats moves, companion wheel, new weapons, provoking fights with smart ass dialog. You know, the "cool" ****

IIRC there was a melee weapon in the inventory of the second part of the demo, so if the previewer was willing to try melee vats moves he/she could.

They showed the companion wheel in various videos, same with some new weapons, including the super anticipated anti-materiel rifle and its 'knocking you back' animation.

It could have been better true, but I don't think it was that bad.

No, not that bad, but still, I don't think that showing casino games was that necessary

Talking of lore...in-world writings to make the world feel deeper without forcing every single player to read it is one of the aspects what I liked the designers to keep. In Bethesda's case, they seem to have began to spend less time on them since Oblivion. :)

 

Also, Obsidian seem to have polished play-ability. I guess they did a good job in homework area. As long as the majority won't be put off from the graphics, hopefully, they will be happy with the improved game-play. :)

I don't remember money ever being a problem in FO3 and pazaak straight out sucked, kind of like that stupid card game from Final Fantasy VIII.

 

This being Vegas and all I'd expect the gambling angle to go a bit deeper than minigames.

It's made with Gamebryo, polish the likes of ME2 is unattainable.

When Beth finally gets Id Tech 5 Obsidian needs to swindle a bunch of Id programmers to help them implement the new engine, tie them up in the basement and have them go over every game they do.

 

I hope Bethsoft allows licensing of Tech 5. Tech 5 and Cryengine 3 will be a nice change from Unreal.
