By the way Gromnir, now you've made me interested in grabbing Icewind Dale and giving it a try. :(

 

keep in mind that iwd is extremely "linear." there is a world map in iwd, but you have a very limited number o' available locations you may travel to, and no random encounter possibility. the critical path gots a simple a-b-c-d kinda progression, so if the illusion o' freedom is important to you, then iwd will have limited appeal. also, unlike bg1, am not certain that a mod were ever created to enhance the interface, screen resolution and character development choice availability... am unaware of an iwd tutu as it were. no kensai/mages in iwd.

 

compared to bg1, iwd benefited from better writing, more varied combat... and more tunnels.

I'm pretty sure I saw an high-resolution mod for IWD, but whatever, as long as there's a way to play it windowed I'm ok.

And personally, I've never been a fan of Baldur's Gate style exploration (there was very little to explore IMHO, most was just filler to increase the time you spent between plot important locations), so it all sounds very good in my book.

It should also be relatively cheap these days, so I'll see if I can grab a copy after my exams, during summer.. you know, for the time I spend in my home and not on the beach, or with my friends, or.. studying. :sorcerer:

The difference being that IWD is a genuinely fun dunegon crawl with fun combat, enterteresting encounters, atmospheric locations, cool dungeons, solidm writing, and is just plain fun.

 

Same can't be said for SOZ which is too bad because the idea of an old school dungeon crawk adventure with the added bonus of a deeper character system is absolutely awesome which is why I was looking forward to SOZ and was dissapiinted hence my over the top exaggerated hatred of it.

iwd had large and highly developed dungeons... the kinda thing that should garner mc approval... lots of tunnels.

 

IWD is the quintessence of old skool D&D goodness and sits right up there in my top 5 CRPGs of all time. As Gromnir points out, it's so well done that you forget the linearity because you are having fun. Loot, monsters, a discernible plot, great dungeons, lots of different combat encounters, fine art direction and some of the best PC game music ever.

 

Honestly, I played it with HoW and TotL added on last year with the widescreen mod and it was still a perfectly good PC gaming experience. Folks here who haven't played it might want to give it a go.

Oh, and nostalgia corner...

 

I like IWD2. A lot. I know many didn't but hey, remember I'm the guy who liked SoZ. But funnily, I enjoyed the banter on the BIS forum during the dev cycle a helluva lot more, q.v. Sawyer's crazy kit suggestions, some of which I'm sure were good natured borderline trolling. Landsknecht, anybody?

Oh, and nostalgia corner...

 

I like IWD2. A lot. I know many didn't but hey, remember I'm the guy who liked SoZ. But funnily, I enjoyed the banter on the BIS forum during the dev cycle a helluva lot more, q.v. Sawyer's crazy kit suggestions, some of which I'm sure were good natured borderline trolling. Landsknecht, anybody?

josh made some very reasonable iwd2 kit suggestions... myrmidon were one such. each kit included minor bonuses and drawbacks... helped to distinguish kit from the base class. unfortunately, people hated josh's suggestions. so josh comes up with some doozies: super-powered world-crusher kits. predictably, people didn't catch the sarcasm behind josh suggestions. the boardies Loved his new suggestions.

 

is good that 3e were implemented thus making the kit questions moot. not the brightest moment in bis board history.

Presumably this is all out there on the Google cache. IIRC the landsknecht, inspired by the Germanic C 16th mercenaries of the same name, was a two-handed specialist who moved really slowly.

 

I can't remember the others, but basically he started suggesting munchkin wet dream kits, and as Grom says some folks were smitten by them. It might not have been our finest hour but it was one of our most amusing.

Great old-school game, really great... and the music is to die for! You'll enjoy it. (IWD2, not so much. I really didn't care for that one.)

I liked both IWD2 and SoZ. Just so you're not feeling lonely.

 

I might actually have to replay SoZ sometime soon, and maybe actually finish it this time. I did get all the way to the end boss, but just couldn't beat it. It's the only fight in recent RPGs that has felt really challenging. Since I wasn't expecting it, I went in woefully underprepared. No crafting done, a sub-optimal spell selection (decent characters though, just under-equipped). Playing on hard (or very hard, whatever the highest difficulty setting in NWN2 was) the main enemy had resistances coming out of his nose, so I got my behind handed to me over and over again. And since I didn't have a recent save close to a crafting station, I decided to put it off for another time. Then I uninstalled the game...

 

(and no, lowering the difficulty is not an option)

 

So yeah, SoZ was nice for what it was. And since I do like RPGs to be challenging, I liked that it had an end-fight I couldn't beat with the preparations I had made.

Agreed on the music. Only played the game once, can't remember much.

 

Too bad current work in an office and the home computer setup pretty much prevent me from playing infinity engine games, as it feels like work. :p
