The game isn't about QTEs, they are just the best gameplay mechanic they could think of for their "interactive drama".

At best it will create a new genre, this won't bring QTEs into every other game(well at least not more than there are already).

Can you think of a better gameplay mechanic for what they're trying to do?

Interactive movies aren't a new genre, there have been attempts to do it every now and then. Eg: Phantasmagoria.

It will fail, because its essentially not a game and thus has limited appeal. Its also expensive, takes a long time to produce and inevitably short because it excludes repetitive gameplay.

How much do PS3 games cost again? I wouldn't buy this even if I had a PS3, not because its bad but because you're not really getting value for money.

No one has tried it with modern technology(well Fahrenheit did, but that failed for completely unrelated reasons).

Whether it will fail or not, the industry needs innovation and you don't normally see AAA titles taking the risk and trying something completely different(for the current generation at least).

PS3 games are $59.95 in America and the same in Euros. I'm not saying you should play this or that it will be a good game, I'm saying that the developers should get some respect for trying something different in a bland market of sequel after sequel in the same ~4 genres.

True, but I think the innovation lies in reworking the core genres, this is by necessity a fringe thing.

I must admit I don't see where or when a break from this infectious console/casual gaming stupidity will come, though I'm really hoping for it.

Of course they do, I just really dislike this sort of product. I liked Mirrors Edge, say - so I'm not opposed to new stuff. Quite the contrary.

We can't let any bit of innovation go to waste, these days it is a precious thing indeed(especially in a high profile game that will actually reach the gaming public, unlike indie games).

While Mirror's Edge did some cool stuff stylistically and in terms of gameplay, I think Heavy Rain has a lot more to offer in future RPG storytelling.

Going by the critical acclaim, this going to end up as a cult classic even if it doesn't sell particularly well.

I agree with Purkake here, they're trying to do some great things about C&C and multiple-branching storylines in games, and bringing that with a very very high level of polish and presentation - that can't be a bad thing.

The story itself seems very Hollywood, though. Your typical drama. I'd rather they delve into different types of narratives instead of trying to prove you can play a movie...

And another thread where do i have to agree with purkake... something must be wrong with the universe :D

People like Quantic Dream, have to get rewarded for trying to do stuff, like they are trying to do... Else we end up soon drowned in CoD:MW clones, and i rather have QTE every 15 seconds than to play mediocre overhyped shooters all the time...

Heavy Rain might be 7-8 hours long for the 1st playthrough, but it's still double the length of CoD:MW2, and you can play it more than once with absolutely different character backgroud... It's realy different to play Heavy Rain as arrogant coldhearted bastard who cares only about himself, or as caring altruist who would rather sacrifice himself just to save another soul... And the consequences realy do matter... It feels like completely different game... I do not remember any other game with such a deep consequences mechanic that was released... ever...

I do realy hope it will sell as much copies as possible...

I read that your PS3 needs to be online to play this game, is this correct?

Not as far as i know... It may be only a symptom of a PS3 bug which occured today... If you look in this thread, you'll see how to possibly avoid the bug... And if you check the kotaku link, there are few other ways how to possibly solve the problem...

You know, if I ever become a serial killer I would use a felt tip pen and mark a stickman jumping off a cliff on my victim's forehead. :)

I'd make a whole story out of the stickmen, and you'd need to position the victims in a certain fashion so as to read it from start to finish. Then when you got to the last part you would realize I was behind you.

STAB!

Go on...

*takes notes*

Going into law enforcement or are you trying to collect on the eventual bounties?

Overall I'm about halfway through and my favorite character is the FBI agent. Of course I am still bugged that EVERYONE says Origami as "Orgami" as if they're from boston FOR ONLY THAT WORD!

Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!

Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

I was in law enforcement. My quality of life has improved somewhat since exiting that field of work. Of course, being a cop with a law degree will get you endless amounts of nookie - that I miss.

Is there anything you haven't been, mr Hot Fuzz? :p

I'm an employment vagabond. In these parts law degrees qualify you for a lot of things, I've done more than a few of those for some months, at least. :)

Ah, a man of many talents.

Back to Heavy Rain, I think David Cage said at some point that he wanted people to only play though the game once and have "their" experience, instead of poking around and looking at all the behind the scenes mechanics. I think this is an interesting idea, but then again I usually play a game only once anyway.

I dunno, I've had fun replaying it so far - but I agree, this is the kind of game where that first, unspoiled playthrough is special in some way.
