Wrath of Dagon Posted October 29, 2009 Share Posted October 29, 2009 I've bought the OEM version and it's a lot cheaper than retail, but before I install it I was wondering if it's really legal. So I read some stuff on the web and found this from an MS mod: OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following: - OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel - OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on - OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard - OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums...b3-cc55cf7b9231 So I guess it's OK, you just have to hope your motherboard doesn't die. Deadly_Nightshade Posted October 29, 2009 Share Posted October 29, 2009 If you're a college student -or anyone else with a valid .edu address- you can get a full "Upgrade Version" of either Home Premium (x86 or x64) or Professional (x86 or x64) for $30 - and in reality the "Upgrade Versions" can be used as a normal, "Full Version" without any problems. [/q] Im using the $30 .edu Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Version and its running great! Definitly worth $30 bucks! Although I do want a few more gigs of ram to help round out my gaming performance. If your motherboard dies and you replace it with the same model or very close to it, that's also fine - I've done this. You have to call Microsoft's activation phone line. As it is, I wound up paying 110 on Newegg for the Home Premium OEM, which I'm sure will be fine. It's a pretty solid OS and worth the money if you're going to have your computer for a few years. I've been using the release candidate for a while, although I foolishly downloaded the 32 bit version when I should've gotten the 64 bit one. And thus my machine is recognizing only some of the 6 gigs of RAM I have in it. Should be getting my legit copy tomorrow, though. Apparently you're kind of at their mercy at that point. Plus I'm not sure you'll be able to find the same model in a couple of years. If you do change out your mobo then call the MS activation center and they will reset your serial # to your new mobo. OR after 6 months your serial gets reset automaticly anyways. Either case issue resolved.
