Death is working overtime on celebs this month

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

I've really been enjoying Pitchmen on the Discovery Channel this season.

It's going to be weird watching it this Wednesday.

I don't know if I'll be able to.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Would it be in terribly bad taste for me to say "so were they"?

This particularly rapid, unintelligible patter isn't generally heard, and if it is, it doesn't matter.

I wonder who will be the next :), David Letterman maybe . Probably not, but what of it!

Nah, Letterman is to young, Larry King next IMO.

Political discussion moved to separate thread. Let me know if a different thread title for that one is better. Enough thread hijacking for today :)

Yes I noticed as much. I travel a lot by train and here in holland there are a bunch of free newspapers given out in the train. At 7 am I picked up a newspaper which had Farrah Fawcett on the frontpage, and by 8 am I was handed an updated one which had MJ on the frontpage and Farrah Fawcett was pushed to page 13.

I thought that was pretty rough.

I so love how the masses have somehow enshirned Micheal Jackson as some type of heroic saint sinc ehis death after over a decade of slamming him with possibly true or false accusation of liking little boys, and other nefarious misdeeds. Silly hypocrites.

As for the other celebrities. Meh. Unimportant. Though, Mr. Carradine was cool in some of his movies. KUNG FU!

I know this probably doesn't mean much to most of you... hell, other than vague memories of reruns during my childhood it doesn't mean much to me either... but Gale Storm, who played the lead in the 1950's tv series My Little Margie, also died last week. Talk about a celebrity roll-call up yonder...

Billy Mays is the saddest death of them all.

Indeed it is. I am more upset over his death than anyone else. :/

Me too.

Stan Lee will be my big one. The guy is almost 90, I hope he's one of those guys who lives to like 110, but I know it won't happen.

What for, Stan Lee created some of the mythology of Spiderman and fantastic 4, and countless other well known superheroes. For this limited to moderately impressive accomplishment he somehow managed to become even more famous than the artists who actually made the comic books. What is the big deal about Stan Lee, other than the fact that he is still alive. With the exception of some iconic fantastic four and even less spiderman the writing is pretty bad. Edited by Gorgon

He became Iconic because while he did only come up with the basics for most of the marvel heroes, he was the driving force behind most of the best story lines in the early days, and he made the business successful again after the war genre moved out. He's basically responsible for comics as we know it today (in terms of writing and story). I think part of it is that he's the person people go to to figure out exactly what Marvel characters should think (since they all pretty much come from his brain).

Also he has a great sense about self parody (see "So you want to be a Superhero" or whatever reality show that was, and the various robot chicken clips), and is a generally likeable guy. Particularly in an industry where some guys can be total jackholes about things (Alex Ross won't draw anyone who was created after the silver age, Dan Way bans people for asking why he only writes five sentances in a book, Greg Land traces porn and says he doesn't...)
