Obsidian making Fallout: New Vegas

BTW, wonder what the currency in New Vegas will be. Bottlecaps again? Gold? Casino chips?

Casino chips sounds very likely. Although not as durable as caps, they can't be reproduced and should be plentiful enough in the Vegas area. I'm expecting bottlecaps though.

Vegas is probably close enough to be affected by the NCR so probably just "money" like in Fallout 2.

I'd be very surprised if the NCR didn't show up in this game, maybe even as the villains.

Eh, I'd hope there aren't any 'villians' in the 'guys in black coats and hats' kind. It'd be nice to see NCR and interact with them somehow though, maybe hear some references to the Chosen One's actions and so on. Although I'd like to see as many original factions as possible - please God, no Enclave or BoS.;)

Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra

You know what would be cool, is having a situation where the factions are at war with one another for drinkable water or some other resource. The basic premise is, the PC has to decide to help one side or the other or just follow his own way. ...And then depict each faction reasonably. Kind of like an argument between Republicans and Democrats, don't just throw out cliched viewpoints. Make the best argument for each side that you can. Will NCR get the water, or New Vegas? Make the best argument for each and then leave room for the player to feel crappy no matter which side he chooses. If doesn't choose a side, then let everyone suffer even more! Yee Haw!

Which is what I hope will happen. Most RPGs never challenge your ideology. All they do is concentrated on making you feel like a badass. I dont need to feel like a badass. I need interesting choices and dialogue, or a challenging viewpoint.

Stale thread is stale. The discussions here are getting OT consistantly, and always about how evil Bethesda is... What about Interplay? I mean, they agreed to selling it right? Its like... Hmm, Nevermind. I would prolly anger people with my best analogy. Anyway, this is all going over the same issues with FO3, and very little to do with Vegas as a concept. Almost every post talks about the same FO3 problems. I think we get the idea, VATS, Lack of depth, not as fun, whoopdidodadalllydipsticksyndrom... WE GET IT!!! If you hate Bethesda and Fallout 3, you're not going to change anyone into hating the game, just like I cant make you like it. Can we talk about how awesome Vegas will be? Maybe stir up a little fanfic ideas? Gang wars, violence, concepts of BOS involvement, new weapons, the ability to make molotovs and burn things down, wants, needs, concepts!!! Stop talking about other games aspects on what you dislike about them, its kinda pointless at this point IMHO.

Yakuza resurgence FTW!

Sorry but I hate optimism. And I definitely dislike people who cant take negativity or criticism. If taking about what was wrong with FO3 and how to fix it is pointless, then talking about how awesome FO: NV will be at this stage is the height of pointlessness.

hey! way to take the least significant part of that post, single it out, and ignore the actual point of the post!

Why would I quote the entire post if I only disagreed with one sentence?

Well hopefully the PC in NV is a structured PC like The Nameless One or The Jedi Exile.

But then again The Fledgling in Bloodlines was a blank PC and that game had a rocking story and dialogue with awesome characters. Its too bad you essentially went through their quest chain in one go and that was it, nothing past that point.

Also I worry about Beth and Bioware hurting the progression of the genre. I mean we definitely are a few step back from game like Planescape, BG II, System Shock 2 and Deus Ex at the turn of the millennium. Its about bigger or prettier now and EPIC.

And I dislike how Obsidian keeps putting themselves in the shadows of Bioware and now Beth. What a bunch of **** that the Aliens RPG got cancelled.

Fallout NEEDS the blank PC, it's all about cutting a path and a character for yourself. When you've created your own special little murderous nazi slavedriver it's a bit unfair for the game to suddenly decide put its own words and backstory into his mouth.

"Oh, he saw his father die when he was young. That's why he shoots children in the ****..."

Well, obviously we're all concerned that New Vegas will repeat all of the horrible, horrible mistakes from Fallout 3. It really feels like the franchise's "last chance", to me anyway. And every so often I see that the lead designer is looking at this thread and possibly taking very detailed notes of everything we're complaining ab-- okay probably not, but it's nice to pretend we're being at least a little bit proactive with our ****ing instead of yelling into the ether or whatever.

And yeah, of course Interplay is to blame for a lot of this, but at this point it'd feel like shouting insults at a drowning man (ie NOT COOL ;) )

Well, anyway, going OT again, Like I said Promethian, its going OT, and we all already know the issues with FO3, and I acknowledge them as important ones. I still like the game, but what game is perfect? Worrying about the same things over and over is like a dog gnawing at the raw patch, its just going to rot off in the long run. Stop bothering about FO3, and, God forbid, trust in Hines saying that Bethesda has Obsidian on a very lax watch on them, and treat this like an Obsidian project more than a Bethesda project. If its bad its bad, if its good, its good. Look to the post apocalyptic future, not the nuke of the past.

And Bethesda so help me God if you treat Obsidian like crap I will put your company on the world map... As a giant, smoldering crater. Your on your honor, don't push it.

But its isnt really OT, since its likely using the same engine and systems as FO3. And hell thats all we can talk about right now other than what we hope will be in, which devolves into hoping things from the older Fallouts will be in. Until we get some idea of where they are going with this game other than Vegas, these are the two subjects we can discuss, and we will discuss them to death

Meh, I guess you are right... But I just kinda get tired of the same thing... Of course, there is an entire forum. I guess I'll just harass the rest of the board. I've been so excited with the announcement of this I just kinda glued myself to this particular thread.

Still hoping for a Solar Scorcher...

I'm still holding out a sliver of hope that it will use Onyx.

I keep it in the same place as my hope that the Alien RPG will get made ;)

Oh Jimmy, you were so funny.

A question to Mr Sawyer, one he can hopefully answer without giving too much away.

What's the status of the SIMPLE in regards to Fallout? Is information contained therein to be considered an oficial part of the Fallout universe, considering F:NV et al?

That wouldn't be his call, that's Bethsoft's. Last I recall SIMPLE wasn't a commercial asset and thus wasn't really claimed by Bethsoft, but they could considering the direct ties to their property. The chances of us seeing it in a game are about as high as Obsidian getting to take a crack at a Fallout game.

I was referring primarily to the information about the world, the Commonwealths in particular. Given that he's the lead on F:NV and the original surviving lead of Van Buren, I think he is in the position to make such decisions.

What's simple?
