Proper CQC

Recommended Posts

I hope this game is going to have proper "martial arts"/CQC instead of two-three different strikes and that's it. What I'm hoping for is a couple different disarms, combos, single-hit knock-outs/kills, different strikes etc... the Bourne game was a let-down here after the wonderful CQC scenes from the first movie(the others were fine too but not as good in that part).

Opinions?

EDIT: I just read further and noticed "Martial Arts skill" thread. Not quite what this thread is about, but I hope they don't just get any martial arts teacher from Karate or some such, but rather someone from the army or some other institute that has proven combat experience.

I doubt there will be a huge variety of moves. CQC may be part of the gameplay, but not a focus afterall.

According to the interview, moves are unlocked by pumping points in CQC combat skill and if I'm not mistaken, it simply makes take down easier and faster.

The art is American Kenpo and the moves are motion-captured. I don't think the moves are specific gun disarms etc. (check out the screenshots), so expect it to be a little in the fantasy realm.

Too bad. That they use American Kenpo. Not because Kenpo is bad, though; because it's disappointing they are using a style at all. IMO they should use everything available from all styles that's practical.. instead of being stuck with one style.

Well, in all fairness, they did say *mostly* American Kenpo.

'American' and 'Kenpo'

until that point I'd been looking forward to the idea of closing in on terrorists etc and pulling off some disarms/takedowns/neckbreaks, of the 3 JBs the game leans toward none of them use a proper system.

This game should have Quantum of Solace/Bourne Ultimatum style CQC or it wont be what I would say most people want

Will there be a roundhouse kick?

... I'm serious. This is the kind of thing you advertise on the box, one of the key features of a game.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Epic doesn't begin to describe that.

Quantum of Solace the game? What's the CQC like in that? If you mean the movie.. I didn't like the CQC in that.. but it was better than in Casino Royale, though. CR was mostly just hit-gethit-hit-gethit-hit-gethit etc ..

And that video, haha :)

I personally want more stylized kicking and punching moves...so I think your what most people want comment is invalid...As for what I want, I doubt I'll get that either so hey...whatever.

What I'd want is not kicks and punches but animations like the Bourne Conspiracy / Kane and Lynch takedowns

More Solid Snake style CQC than Snake style Kung Fu

Exactly, agreed. Punches and kicks are.. very boring if you just have to press a button so he does the same hit five times until the enemy drops.. animations would be really nice.

In standard combat situations, Mike performs linked sequences of rapid punches and kicks. This is "standard" (albeit cool-looking) pummeling, with a nice amount of variety. This is CQC for mashers. Press button, hit opponent. The longer you push CQC strings, the more likely it is that the opponent will block and counter. You can also hold the CQC button (instead of a tap) for a strong attack, which stumbles the target backward.

If you sneak up on a target or stun the target (through a couple of means), you can do a front or rear take down. Under normal circumstances, this is a harsh but non-lethal take down that knocks the target out. If you have a karambit knife equipped, it is a harsh and very lethal take down that makes your mom cry.

Ah.. does he only throw straight jabs and one kind of a kick or can we expect to see knee kicks, knife hand strikes, perhaps some tripping of the enemy, Karate style "locks"(where you break someones arm/whatever with a strike instantly instead of holding him there) et cetera? The most important thing for me would be that there is some variety - that he doesn't always do the same combo and attack the same area.

About the block/counter thing.. does the opponents/your level affect the chance? How quickly can you take someone down with CQC normally? Because there shouldn't really be a need to do it for long.

The take downs sound pretty good.

Thanks.

Knife hand (aka karate chop) is in one of the screenshots, so that's definitely in.

Thumbs up for using a karambit; AP might be the first game to do it.

As always, it's great to hear more info. The system sounds potentially more sophisticated than I expected, hopefully it is also somewhat balanced compared to just shooting somebody in the head.

There's a pretty nice amount of variety. One of the reasons we chose AK was because of its wide variety of strikes.

Some enemies are more skilled at hand to hand defense and are more likely to block and counter. How quickly you can take someone down does depend on the enemy and how you built your character.

Cl_Flushentityhero: I wouldn't really say it's sophisticated. It's simple, but it has good variety and a little more flexibility than just doing the same two-hit combo on a guy over and over. It's very easy to target enemies with CQC when you get up on them, whereas aiming and targeting a gun can be a little trickier at close range (especially on a console controller). I think people will mostly use CQC from stealth, to perform immediate (and silent) take downs. In firefights, it will often be reserved for situations where enemies just get too close to make standard running and gunning easy. One of the CQC unlocks is a quick flying knee (not AK, but... come on, flying knees are pretty sweet), so you can also use it to quickly send a guy flying if someone steps out while you're in a running state.
