mp3 confusion

I was converting my 320kbps mp3 files to 256kbps to save some space when I see that the converted 256 kbps files come out larger than the original files. What gives?

I'm using CDex with LAME.

The 320kpbs could have been compressed with variable bitrate?

I'm compressing them to 256kbps with a variable bit rate, so that shouldn't make a difference. Or should it?

I've used it as well. In fact, some of my mp3 were encoded with it. I didn't really see much of a difference, though.

Mostly conversions from CD.

Anyway, after some testing, apparently the size change ranges from a bunch of megs larger to one or two megs smaller than the originals. With this in mind, I'm just going to give up and leave things as they are. I still have 500 Mbytes free on my player, anyway.

the reason I was asking is I was wondering if you re-ripped form the original to 256, rather than convert a convert, if the file size would be smaller. Hope that makes sense :(

The 320kpbs could have been compressed with variable bitrate?

Afaik there is no such thing as variable bitrate if it's 320. So maybe that's where the difference comes from, going from constant bitrate to variable. Or maybe it's something different. But if you want to give it another go, you could try doing 256 constant I guess.

Edit: Since you're using LAME, does this mean you're going from 320 constant to V0 varible? Or just 256 variable?
