Going into this flick I was a little afraid after seeing quite a few lackluster animated comic movies. But I found this to be a decent take on the Silver Age of DC superheroes. Worth a rental, at least compared in relation to its competition. Have you read the stories it was based on? The last movie I saw was The Signal, a low budget horror film about a broadcast through TV/radio and phones that causes people to kill. Its "okay" at best; the movie was divided by three writer-directors into three different sections, so the whole is rather uneven. I thought the opening was weak with some very poor drama and dialogue, then picked up only to descend into people acting really stupid. The second part is the best of the three, and also the darkly funniest. But it also contains a number of "why are these people acting that stupid" moments. The third is mostly a chase/race story so there's little to it and the immediate end is somewhat let down by a lack of budget and some confusing psychology, but manages to be kinda okay. Couldn't say I could really recommend the film though. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Pidesco Posted February 28, 2008 Share Posted February 28, 2008 Shoot em up. I had heard this movie was good from someone who only a few days ago I thought I could trust. I wasn't too impressed. I'm a mild fan of Clive Owen and he did a fine job but I suppose this movie just wasn't for me. I'm not a huge fan of over the top action and this was no short of being ridiculous but even so there were other problems. They tried to introduce backgrounds of the characters in horribly action cliche ways that were entirely retarded and unwarranted. I can understand that this movie was a parody of action movies but it just wasn't funny or all that awesome. Blood splatter and crazy gun shot wounds were cool but for the most part it was just all over the place and not awesome. 6.5/10 - Needed more bewbies and less trying to satirize action movies. That's like saying Apocalypse Now needed less war, or Love Story needed less love, or Aliens needed fewer aliens. The unravelling of the story was like listening to an anectdote heard in a coffee shop on a busy morning. Slow, long and irrelevant. I didn't really care what happened. The pacing was ok for the film itself but it was too slow for my taste. I'm still wondering what the use of TLJ's character is for. Josh Brolin's performance was more of a surprise to me and I found his work in this better then Bardem's, who just stares blankly at things and uses a deep, barely audible voice. Also, I couldn't figure out how a man of Moss' obvious intelligence would go back to the scene of a drug deal gone bad to bring water to a dying survivor, after many hours. It was an above average movie but it had a lot of potential in my opinion and it only ended up being sup par. The movie was long as hell and was a little boring a few times, pacing was well done but I mean it was like 3 hours, so not much you can do about that. I would have liked if they added a bit more "action/suspense" but the investigation portion of the movie was fine I suppose just could have been a bit more lively. The story itself was interesting and fresh considering there hasn't been a gangster movie in quite a while, the acting was solid, and there honestly was no major flaws besides the length of the movie. As a whole the movie doesn't come close to the caliber of movie like Casino, but thats kind of unfair since Casino is like an amazing movie. Way better than any of that other trash the majority of stupid meat headed meat faces that walk the streets saying Scarface, Godfather, etc is the best. But enough about that, I give you the much anticipated score. 8.1/10 - Towards the end things got pretty cool and the music in the film was nice. If they would have shaved off like 30 minutes, amped up the action and STYLE of the film this could have been a real gem. Just pulls out a -B. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. He doesn't understand the murders, and he simply refuses to believe that someone like Chigurh would be capable of that kind of atrocities. Watch his ending speech again, where one will understand on why "There is no country for old men". As for Moss going back, it was a flash of doing the right thing. Which is partly the point of the movie, look for everytime someone does a good thing, and how it messes things up for them. I found Sicko to be more about Health Insurance than Healthcare. He bashes on insurance companies a lot more than the governement. Until the last "chapter" where he mixes up his causes with the war in Irak. I wouldn't say it was total crap, but I do mostly agree w/the sentiment It had some comic/amusing moments - if Bruce is in the movie, it's bound to - but overall it was kind of a snooze-fest. It was very long but makes normal cut seem like the biggest pile of poo* in the world. Extra plots, dialouge, more complete. I can't watch the theater versions at all anymore for that reason. Extended adds more depth, which was somewhat lacking before. Not that it's super-deep even in the extended, but .... yeah, y'all know what I mean. But after the first time, I haven't been able to sit through all 3 extended without fast-forwarding through a lot of scenes. The more I came to memorize the films, the more scenes there are that I realize I don't find all that entertaining on repeated viewings. And the last movie I saw was Hoosiers. One of those old movies I hadn't seen a long long time, and one of the few "sports" movies that I actually like. “Things are as they are. Probably the best DC animated film, and right up there with Iron Man for best animated comic movie. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.
