Hi, my name is Lou Gutman, and I play Fable. I play Fable because it lets me get a fiance, but we don't want to live in Oakvale, so we decide to move to Bowerstone instead. The trip goes through the dangerous Darkwood however, but my overconfidence in my ability to protect myself and my fiance outweighs caution. So we go through, and everything is going great, I'm killing Balvarines and hobbs and the like, lightening them, and fireballing them, with the greatest of ease. We arrive at Darkwood lake, and everying is going great, she's making eyes at me, so I know I'm going to get some later that night, and I'm on top ofr the world. But just then, there's a bandit attack! No problem, nothing my sword and a little magic can't handle. But then something happens. My fiance is behind me, but a bandit comes up behind me too, and takes a swing, missing me, but it hits something. I quickly dispatch the bandits, and by the time the dust settles I realize the horrifying truth to what had happened. When that bandit missed me, he hit my fiance or something, fatally wounding her, and now, as she lies on the ground like, dead or dying or whatever, the anger inside of me comes full circle, as I realize that I'll never see her again, unless one of the villagers respawn with the same model as her, but still, it's not the same, it isn't my um, well, they don't really have names, so, uh, it isn't my female model number 3. From that point on, I vow then and there, to be ever vigilante, and roam Darkwood making sure that this never happens to anyone again. My anger outweighs my guilt. I get a balvarine face tatoo. Why balvarines sir? Balvarines frighten me, it's time my enemies share my dread. Why do we fall Bruce? So that we can learn to pick ourselves back up. I seem to have taken his advice about theatricality a little literally. I'm Balvarineman!

God, how I hate Fable.

 

Most people don't seem to catch on, but what it tried to present early on is an ambiguity of heroism and inspiration. It came across as idiot stoner philosophy. Even evil men can be heroes, because they inspire people! *bangs head on desk*

 

I can only imagine what that was like when they came up with it in the office.

 

Dev1: "Well, we can't come up with any remotely original ideas for the hub of the game. So, we're going to make it a school. Perhaps an adventuring school."

Dev2: "Hmm. Sounds good, sounds good. WAIT! I've got it. Make it a school for heroes!"

Dev1: "But we want to give good and evil equal exposure, why make it a school just for heroes?"

Dev2: "Who says evil people can't be heroes? Y'see, hero is an ambiguous term. Even mice and ants can be heroes. Everything can be heroes. An evil person can be a hero simply by being great and inspiring others to be great!"

Dev1: "Wouldn't that just make him a villain? What's wrong with just making him an adventurer and leaving out the boorish pseudo-philosophy?"

Dev2: "Look, dude, I had Starbucks today. I'm deep. I know what I'm talking about."

I like Fable, because I don't really pay attention to that sort of stuff that it presents to you. Whenever I play it, I have fun just comming up with my own stories and scenerios with my imagination and then playing them out, like the one illustrated above. So for me, the game was worth buying, because I get a lot out of it, that isn't really what the game developers may have invisioned.

Fable was shallow with little substance. I haven't played a good Molyneux game since Syndicate.

I'll justify this statement better after lunch, but I'm putting it out for general response right now.

 

Overlord was everything Fable did wrong done right.

Is that the only reason you hate fable tale? I mean come on, come on. I really liked fable. Combat system was pretty solid and I really liked the fighting in it (some small flaws like lightning some poor civilians who get in the way of a battle), story was reasonable of course it wasn't amazing but its not like it completely sucked, graphically i thought it looked quite nice and they did a decent job with atmosphere and stuff. Obviously there were things I didn't like. I kind of wish there was more of a class system instead of allowing you to be a master of 2 and a half disciplines, MORE CONTENT - more locations, more quests, more swords and armour and skills and spells especially geared towards a sweet end game where you can just go insane and kill people with crazy weapons and spells. But other than that i thought in its entirety the game was good.

 

Edit: omg are you serious? I disliked overlord, quite a bit. The atmosphere and art direction was very similar to fable but the combat sucked. I hated the controls and towards the end of the game the fights were just stupid. You only used pretty much exclusively greens. Blue and red were pretty useless the entire game and browns were just your go to guys.

There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. More data must be gleaned and further collated before a sufficient judgment can be reached.

I can't stand RPGs that are meant to be action based. I think it's a flawed concept. RPGs as a system, blow for action. I hate Diablo just the same. Overlord didn't pretend to have the RPG section. It was pure action adventure. Fable and Overlord both attempt a british cartoon humor style of art design, only Fable's attempt at it came across as a political cartoon with no context.

 

The humor in Overlord was actually amusing. The humor in Fable was grating.

 

And if I'm going to play a game who's only upside is fighting? I'm going to be playing Dead or Alive or a multiplayer shooter, not a hack and slash. To get me to like a hack and slash, you need to have at least 1 of the following 3 items:

1) Good humor

2) Good puzzles or just generally thought provoking concepts

3) Good atmosphere

 

The fewer items you have of each, the more you need of what you do have. Fable had nothing. Overlord was amusing, it had strategy and puzzles, and it did very nice plays on the traditional fantasy stereotypes.

Didn't we have this discussion a month ago? Fable is a game you either love or hate. They key is to not go in with huge expectations, it's a light game with some interesting gameplay options. I think Pixies is really making the best use of it, he creates his own storyline using imagination. It's not War and Peace, it's a trashy novel and I loved every moment of it.

The problem was Fable was hyped to have all these features that it ended up not having since Xbox wasn't powerful enough, like trees that grow, being able to get married and have kids, people that age etc. I remember a magazine saying that if you cut a kid when he's a child, he'll grow up to an adult and still have the scar where you cut him.

Peter Molyneux is a mediocre game designer at best, but through good PR he has managed to crate an image of himself as a gifted "auteur". Lionhead had this disgusting PR woman attend the confrence we held this summer and I swear she did not utter one sentence without mentioning Peter Molyneux.

 

 

Fable is the essential Molyneux game, interesting at first glance but devoid of any real substance. Onc you get past changing haircuts, you're left with doing missions that only consist of escort NPC A to point B or go to point B and kill everything there over and over and over again. Yawn.

Um, I'll state again that I only remember ever doing one escort quest, and I don't know why you would need to repeat any quests. In fact I don't even remember killing all that much, particularly compared to every other game on the market right now.

There are many escort quests, and what I was saying is that there are in fact only two types of quests 1) Escort 2) Seek and destroy. It gets repetitive very quickly once you realise youre doing the same thing over and over. Which is a testiment of Molenyux poor choices to spend more time making it possible for your character to chang apparance depending on your good/evil points, than to actually make a game thats fun to play.

Fable wasn't a terrible game, it was just so mediocre and there is nothing really good to remember about the experience, be it art, sound, quests, characters, story, whatever.

 

That's why if for some reason it clicks for you, then you can say "it's not fantastic but its a fun game", and argue that it doesn't have more combat than other games, or other games have silly quests like that too... it's relatively polished and does all the motions, but it's like a really bored and sleepy person writing an essay for a class he doesn't really want to do. Uninspired and flat.

Huh...I actually only remember about 10 quests total. I played it on the Xbox, and it's definitely been a few years, but I seriously don't remember it being a very repetitive game. It was over in about 20 hours, so I don't see how it can even reach that point. But hey, I'm an idiot with no taste, so I suppose you have to factor that into the fun equation.

Ah, Kaftan doesn't mean anything by saying stuff like that. You have to read statements like those with a goofy voice. Of course, that's how I read ALL of Kaftan's posts. hehe

 

I wasn't much of a fable fan, but I never owned the game. Who knows. Wasn't my cuppa, though.
