A new stalker thread for talking about the old game plus looking forward to the new one seemed like a good idea.

FIrst off: Patch 1.4 has been released:

http://stalker.filefront.com/file/STALKER_...;82268#Download

At least one more major patch is rumored to be in the works still.

Saved games.

Saved games from 1.0003 version will work with 1.0004 version.

Connecting to the server will be possible only if the host's version of the game is the same as yours.

Patch 1.0004 changes and fixes:

1. Calculating detailed objects was moved to the second CPU stream.

2. Engine optimization, which resulted in FPS 10-15% gain.

3. Shaders optimization.

2. Retail version now works correctly with the standalone dedicated server.

3. Added remote control for the dedicated server.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

ANd due in Q1 2008: STALKER Clear Sky. A strange title which I actually kinda like.

Read about it here:

I wish they'd patch in that co-op function they talked about early in STALKER's development. It was cut pretty late. Same with vehicles, although now that I've seen the game, I realize vehicles would have been superfluous. I had imagined STALKER being more like Oblivion in regards to the game world..

My only disappointment with the cuts was just that - the world wasn't open, but in sections. It's not a bad in as such, I just feel left out.

Well, I am pretty hopeful that the new game will feel a little less "tight" then S:SoC. Accoring to the faq, STALKER: Clear Sky will have all the existing territory from the first game as it existed some years prior to S:SoC as well as 50% more new areas. If that is true, then that is going to be a pretty large space to explore. Not Oblivion big, but still plenty big enough to make the world feel more open even if area transitions are handled in the same way as S:SoC.

I thiknk it would be pretty cool to see the Agroprom Institute when it was still staffed with researchers rather than just being a run-down battlezone.

  • 4 weeks later...

So, I bought this game a few days ago (Collectors edition), installed, patched etc.

Much to my surprise it actually runs very well on my old computer, even on high settings. Maybe the NWN2 developers should take note

Learned to dodge anomalies, kill enemies, mutants etc. Know most of the controls by now. I think I am in love with this game :ermm:

I've failed one mission so far (finding the fethin pseudodog tail). I took great pleasure in killing each and every dog I ran across, but none were the right kind. Ah well, can't win them all.

After the second lost mission, I decided to replay that mission (I survived, but the other guys didn't). I got my ass handed to me royally, trying to help out Bes defending the garbage dump from bandits. A kindgdom for a flamethrower!

Maybe it is time to break out the grenades, or is there a trick to completing this mission? I don't have any sniper rifles, so just picking them off in fast succession with headshots is not an option ;)

The first time I did that mission, I also got owned. All I can say is use cover judiciously, watch out for flankers, don't stay in the same spot for too long and aim for the head. Oh, and try to protect your team mates.

They got fragged!

Quite literally. Luring them out with a few salvos, I lead them back to other stalkers and when they were all crowding together at the fence, trying to get through the holes, I sacrificed a few of my holy handgrenades. It was quite funny actually, they actually tried to run away from the grenades, just to get caught in the covering fire of my "allies", promptly ducking and taking cover, still within the blast radius of the grenade. Sucks to be them I guess. Two grenades weakened the bandits enough to make them manageable.

Dragging as much loot as possible back to the trader turned out to be a drag (pun unintended). Especially when trying to run across that radioactive stretch of railroad :sorcerer:

I seriously like a game where you can't carry 350kg of equipment and run at the same time. Requires a bit of re-adjustment for an old pack rat gamer :)
