Zero Posted August 15, 2007 Share Posted August 15, 2007 Recently (past month or so) Hot Fuzz: really, really good, in my opinion. Probably one of my overall favorite comedies (even if its is a bit premature to say that) The Host: Which I thought was good and well paced for the most part; the characters aren't necessairly the most developed but you learn to care about them through the actor (who are all very appealing). I found the ending though, really left me feeling cold and distant. Especially with all the hope it built up with having the young girl still surviving despite all odds up till that point. It just felt like a punch in the face. Truthfully, I think it would have worked better (humour-wise at least), if the careless American military scientist who meets the protagonist about mid way into the movie- actually did try to help him. But I guess that would ruin the director/writer's (kinda blunt) political commentary. Still the movie would have been dark and funny, with a turn in such a character (who maybe is still ignorant the monster is his fault). And we still have elements of needless tragedy -with the death of the grand father. The parts that work best are the mostly early that have a very distinct dark humor element to them. Pans Labrynth: I'm sure a lot has been said about this. Simple story which is fitting since it comes from a child's vantage point. Amazing music, photographed well, and the acting is amazing. And the movie is very well paced- I think Del Toro has really grown as a film maker , after seeing Hellboy and the Devils Backbone - both movies had their strength. But PL really shows how far he has progessed . The movie also has more heart (hate using that term) than his previous outings, perhaps due to the performance of the young female lead. Casino Royale: Finally saw this, they get the setting right. And Craig does a great job as bond- I didn't dislike him as I disliked other Bonds. But the movie just drags and drags- ultimately I was disappointed. And the opening scene in Africa was a tad ridiculous. Performances are good though. I'll also add , I'm another person who thought Bringing out the Dead was a great movie- it really captures certain elements (I'm not sure how to describe) such as when Frank (Cage) exits the elevator onto the floor of the drug dealer after the shoot out. And we hear the song "Red, Red, Wine", as we survey they apartment, we see goldfish writhing on the floor, and distant yelling. , but that kinda just have a value in and out of themselves as an experience. Every time I tried to take the movie seriously, I though back to the fact "23" is just a number, and then realised this was retarded. Though I'm convinced that the director has future, since the realisation was well done, though it kinda felt the characters were always on edge and freaked out. "Alright, I've been thinking. Yeah why i gave the number 23 an 8 out of 10 i dont know why, must of been on crack. I'm regiving it a 6 out of 10. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. Although, I'm not too fond of this type of thing inwhich an author will totally fabricate something about real people. In the end it will probably only slightly askew history. Scarlett Jo, was hawt, but I would have gone all out and given her a pearl necklace. Two friends die, and he gets brain damage. He is unable to sequence his memories and must write down everything so he can remember to do things such as shave and other mundane things. Through struggling with his condition and how the people around him treat him he is lured into a plan to rob the bank that he works nights at cleaning. I liked this movie. It wasn't amazing or anything crazy but it definitely wasn't a chore to get through. It was above average. I give The Lookout 8/10 for awesome acting blind roommate, shotgunning, and desanguination. Laozi Posted August 19, 2007 Share Posted August 19, 2007 (edited) The Station Agent One of the best films I've seen this year, I've sat through parts of it before, but never saw the whole thing till the other day. Its like an 8 1/2 out of 10. Patricia Clarkson is a really underrated actor, one of the real strengths of this movie is the casting. Only complaint I could have is that the movie apparently too place in Newfoundland, and the soundtrack seemed to be a little lacking. Pulp Fiction I remember being nervious about seeing this movie in the theater because at the time I was underage. I guess I haven't really seen it since except in passing. A pretty significant part of the film, the exchanges between Thurmond and Travolta are utter tripe. I dunno why I thought this movie was any good to began with, granted I was like 15-16. Most of the dialogue is equally as boring, which limits the good parts of this film to Sammy Jackson's iconic appearances and Ving Rhames getting ass raped, so nothing all that substancial. I'd give it like maybe a 4 out of 10. It seems that every Tarantino movie gets worse with each subsequent viewing with the possible exception of KillBill, which I have only seen twice. Its like he never really gets any new material, just rips off different movies for their action sequences. "The film is about Hayley Stark, a 14-year-old girl who meets Jeff, a 32-year-old photographer who may be a sexual predator. The two first meet on the Internet before seeing each other in person at a local coffee shop, which results in a trip to Jeff's home; however, Jeff soon learns that Hayley is not as innocent as she appears. The title "Hard Candy" comes from the internet slang for an underaged girl." I thought this movie would try and explore pedophilia and the issues surrounding it but it didn't. Instead it boiled down like some kind of crappy suspense/slasher/horror film. (wait don't all those movies already suck?) The foundation of the very film is shaky at best and the more it played on the more it crumbled. You'd think a film about pedophilia would be hardcore but it was tame and did nothing to even try and scratch the surface of the issue. Despite the plot and message being totally one way street to obvious and simple mindedness lane, I kind of liked it. Turn off your brain and just watch. Decent style. 6.5/10. Probably won't be watching this one any time soon. It's shown on YTV here around once a year, but only after midnight and it has a crap load of commercials. Most recently it was on at midnight last night. Went out this morning and bought the DVD so I wouldn't have to watch it with commercials again. Now that I have the DVD and can compare the English and Japanese voices, I think this is the first one that I prefer almost all the English voices over the original Japanese. I love the little kodama guys. So cute. You should check out some other miyazaki films, especially spirited away (probably in my top 5 of fav movies). Also Howl's moving castle and Nausicaa of the wind are pretty good. He's really good, can't wait for him to release another movie before he dies however from what I can tell he's going with a weird art direction for his next film which I think is frankly retarded and going to look really crappy thus making me very angered. It's basically a really entertaining mood-piece, though like, personally I wouldn't have minded the plot being more, I dunno... peripheral. I was a lot more interested in - and impressed by, and taken in by - its depiction of 50s black neighborhoods. Don Cheadle was pretty funny. ... how was the book?
