Yup, Amerikan Army Treats Their Soldiers With Kid Gloves When Committing Crimes During War

What baffles me is US justice system:

4 murders + rape of a child = up to 100 years

teacher blamed for porn popups in school computers = up to 40 years

So not preventing porn popups at school computers if you are a teacher = at least 1 murder. :sorcerer:

first of all, that's "faces up to 40 years," not "sentenced to 40 years." if you added up all the _possible_ jail time for multiple murders, it can run into hundreds of years pretty quickly. also, the soldier entered a plea agreement, which always results in a reduced sentence. had the gal in this case pled to a lesser charge, she would not have faced such a harsh sentence possibility.

i do think it seems a bit ridiculous, though all we have to go on is the viewpoint of the commentary, which is biased towards the defendent.

Still, people like to claim that the US Army ignores crap liekt hat or just slaps the guilty.

R00fles!

This made me remember when here in Italy that american Captain, trying to be better than Tom Cruise, decided to fly in a valley under the minimum altitude above the maximum speed allowed. Then he found out that on his course passed a cableway, the plane cut the cables, and (at least) a dozen of people died. A couple of years later he was promoted to Major.

More recently, an italian special agent died in Iraq. He was on way to Baghdad's airport after the rescue of a captive journalist. At a checkpoint some american soldiers panicked, and shooted on the car on sight. The driver died, the hostage was wounded, another agent left in critical condition. Guess what? They were assolved.

Walsingham just quoted the wrong post. No biggy.

Ah nuts.

the question had been on what basis I was saying the US Army tends to hand down light sentences to offenders on foreign soil. I got the from a serving major in HM Army disciplinary body. I really don't know why. It does immeasurable harm to the image of the US Forces. Which is maybe why this one sounds serious.

Frankly, my understanding of arab political opinion in the street will be that anything less than execution will be seen as soft. On the other hand the guy did plea bargain a confession, so maybe that was on the table if they had to fight for a conviction.

yeah, you got the right poster, just the wrong post.

however, i didn't ask you _why_ you thought that, i simply stated you have no way of knowing. even one serving major "fessing up" in such a manner is still hearsay. you could probably ask DAs the same thing in any local prosecutor's office and get a similar response. it all depends upon the narrow view one has, even if from the inside, simply because it is next to impossible to gauge such a subjective concept, particularly when you haven't seen all of the case files.

rape + murder should be life without parole and hard labor, IMO. if they could figure out a way to put in 100% certainty, i'd vote death penalty, but i just don't think such a concept is feasible in general.

yeah, best cheese movies ever. the bridge scene in the first, btw, was filmed on a bridge in missouri. st. charles rock road bridge as i recall. i grew up not far from there (outside of st. louis). i'm not sure if it's still there, however, as it was already boarded up back then.

I'll accept it would be stronger if it was backed up with figures. The major may also have been doing some impromptu nationalist tubthumping. However, it's not like I'm just pulling an opinion off a taxi driver. It's this guy's job to know how law is approached in the US military in case a British servicemember falls foul of it.

true, on that i agree. however, he is military and his opinion is skewed by perhaps an otherwise harsh sense of discipline. what he's calling a "slap on the wrist" in other (unmentioned) cases, may seem just, or even harsh to civilians. that's all i was getting at, that opinions are just that, particularly absent the rigor required to make such broad statements.

DAs probably all (well, most) think we're too soft on crime, defense attorney's probably think we're all too harsh. depends upon your point of view.

Interesting idea. I can't say without quizzing him again, and that's unlikely.

if this was a black drug user, he'd get 4 life sentences or get sent straight to death row.

if he was a drug user of any kind, black, white or otherwise, he'd probably already have a criminal history. so yeah, his sentence would have been harsher. duh.

I've been thinking about this. If the man were mentally unstable rather than affected by a drug illness then hed be given treatment not just punishment.

i never said anything about a criminal history. Besides, most pedophiles don't have a criminal history. Hell, most serial killers didnt have a criminal history. Besides, with a crime like this, i dont think criminal history should matter. He should be locked away regardless.
