Silent Hunter IV

Normally I would be joining in with you with rejoicing.

But the thought of having maybe 2 years of challenge isn't floating my boat (no pun intended). The Japs had no chance against the US submarines for most of the war, so the game will start of slightly hard (more frustrating due to the American torpedoes that didn't work for about a year) and end up being a cake walk beyond belief.

Maybe this game will include fantasy Japanese robots, or giant sub hunting lizards. :ermm:

Its UbiSoft. Stay away from the UbiSoft.

Murphy's Law of Computer Gaming: The listed minimum specifications written on the box by the publisher are not the minimum specifications of the game set by the developer.

That is a good point, in that at least with Silent Hunter III, you knew the Allies were going to get better and better at combating the submarine threat. The thing I am looking forward to though is the campaign, and specifically the dynamic mission updates. See a plane get shot down, and suddenly you're on pilot rescue detail. The waters are supposed to be more alive in this installment. Apparently the more success you have, the more dangerous and aggressive your missions will be.

At the same time, it is a video game and I'm sure they'll continue to do things to make things challenging for the player. I have played other Pacific Theatre submarine games and they were always fun. I hope (though don't expect) the "dynamic campaign" to be truly dynamic. But at the same time, I am just one submariner, so my influence shouldn't be super significant. Just something to show that my successes and failures have some sort of an impact would be neat.

Ever played Dangerous Waters, dear archnemesis?

Alas, I have not.

Since I, or anyone else interested in the Silent Hunter series, clearly do not feel this way, all I can say is I don't care what you have to say on the subject.

alanschu: Exactly. In SH3 it starts off with you being able to sit amongst a convoy at night, having a gunnery duck shoot, and then, as the war progresses (and you have pulled off all the Das Boot and Gunther Prien escapades you wanted to) the Allies become deadlier and deadlier to the point of near insanity.

My channel dash in 1944 was an unforgettable piece of foolish excitement. I made it sure, but afterwards it was a slow, deadly limp around the top of Britain in order to get back home. Oh, I managed to sink an armed trawler during that run.

Dangerous Waters is a modern sub sim. The real advantage it has is multi-stations coop. Which is awesome.

I vaguely remember you and Nick talking about it before I abandoned your HOI2 game.

Agreed. Once the Liberators are out with their surface detection RADARs, you might as well just dive your submarine to crush depth and save the British the ordinance. I remember my first death. It was just outside Brest, and I get the "Airplane Spotted!" So I go to the Conn Tower, and see probably 12 Liberators all streaming in on my position. I barely had time to state "Oh. My. God." As many strings of splashes quickly converged on my sub. I actually survived that attack....it's just they took out both of my diesels. The best I could do was dive (since the game wouldn't let me use electrics on the surface...), but I couldn't repair the flooding damage fast enough before another squadron of Liberators decided to waste 30 bombs on me to overkill me to hell and back.

I'm still interesting in the 4th installment though. Submarines are fun regardless :D I'm looking forward to the dynamic mission updates that will hopefully keep things fresh.

Gee it sounds like so much fun ... for a masochist.

Silent Hunter 3 definitely was! It was ridiculous in 1944. If you were lucky, you got away from Great Britain and into open sea. If you were even luckier, you'd not stumble upon a Hunter Killer group (think 5-6 destroyers with the sole task of patrolling sea lanes for submarines....though you'd usually only encounter them near land, and therefore near airbases). If you were super lucky, any convoy escorts would not be armed with Hedgehogs (an awesome forward firing ASW weapon that only explodes on impact, so they can keep ASDIC scope on you the entire time), and if you were super duper mega lucky...you'd find a solo ship.

It was fun dodging depth charge run after depth charge run when 80 m below sea level spamming decoys and trying to get below the thermal layer that reflects ASDIC back. I had some encounters last 30 minutes to an hour just trying to get deep and lose the hunters. Few things are more ominous than the "ping" you hear. YOu just pray they don't hear it back :D

The screens are pretty, tho their trailer nearly blew out my eardrums w/headphones on. :)

Any clue on sys requirements? I couldn't find it on that page. I have a feeling I might like this series.

I couldn't find anything for requirements. I imagine this probably means that the March 15th release date I saw at IGN may not be appropriate anymore :)"

Oh yeah, it seems :- no longer needs the " to complete. Which is completely wrong!!!1
