You'll more likely end up watching the film yourself..

choose a romantic film, with mature themes (no, not lesbian porn).. show that you are a sensitive person, but not adolescent in your choices.

saw pirates.

first half of movie impression: *groan* this movie drags its feet likes a gout ridden wino with the DTs.

second half of the movie impression: ... huh?

nevertheless, it were not likes we felt cheated. the action sequences were okie dokie, and the return of Geoffrey Rush were welcome, but the dialogues were far less witty, and the characters were less colorful. what a waste of Chow Yun Fat. jack sparrow were kinda boring in this flick. some scenes reminded us of terry gilliam flicks of past, and that were both good and bad.

maybe there were too many main characters. Geoffrey and orlando, and keira, and bill nighy and depp and naomie harris all hads to have some sorta resolution to their story lines, and that were far too big a task to be pulling off given the way that the first two movies were not really building 'pon each other... 'cause first movie were more of a stand alone story. the thing that bothered Gromnir most were that there were this big Davey Jones/Calypso thing building, and in the end, it just were... abbreviated. huh?

never got back the magic o' movie #1, which were fun and clever and unexpected. this latest installment were an okie dokie movie that were salvaged at end by a wonderful action sequence that somehow not seem too long, and by a satisfactory resolution to the orlando and keira story, but we couldn't help but feel that pirates 3 were far (FAR) less than it could have been.

HA! Good Fun!

It really depends on what you want to do. If you have a particular film you've wanted to see, suggest that. If not, I'd stall the choice for a bit by initiating a conversation. What are they like? What do they like? What clues in their behavior give you an idea or instinct on the film choice. Then, I'd choose a film that sounds like something they'd like, but also something that you think you can enjoy as well.

I'd actually recommend Pretentious **** 8, it's the best of the series.

I saw pirates of the crap 3 on saturday. I fully agree with Gromnir's take on the film. I'd just like to add that keira was irritating and was completely unconvincing as a "badass pirate". Her braveheart speech was terrible and made me cringe.

So that makes it two crappy sequels so far thise summer. Only a squillion more to go!

All Braveheart speeches are terrible and cringy.

Except for the original Braveheart speech and Aragorn's.

You guys are way too hard on a summer popcorn blockbuster Hollywood Bruckheimer produced movie film.

What did you expect? Lars Von Trier's next?

My friend commented that speach must have been written by Mel Gibson. I told him it would need more gratuitous blood and limbs flying around in the background.

Yes, the Braveheart speech is a hackneyed piece of scripting but that is not why I thought the PoTC version was cringeworthy. The main thing about it was that it was unconvincing given that

a) It seemed very out of place to give a speech about freedom to pirates of all people

b) The speech was given by what looked like a twelve year old boy.

Personally, I don't think this movie is rubbish because it is a "summer popcorn blockbuster" - I am not a film snob. It's rubbish because in essence it is literally a mess. Too many characters and too many plotlines none of which are developed enough to be satisfying. You cant even call it action packed since a lot of the film just drags and is filled with babble concerning "pirate code" and random magic stuff. By the time the action rolls around it just turns out to be the same old thing - fighting with the odd quip.

Aragorn's speech was nearly as good as Theodan's. :D Damn it, why did they have to get rid of my favorite smiley? :Cant's sad about the loss of his favorite smiley icon:

To further elaborate on my drunken ramblings, in terms of Pirates, I didn't quite dig the whole Calypso deal where she grew into the fifty foot woman and roared some incoherent babble then turned into crabs. I just thought that could've been handled better.

I saw the Queen. I thought Helen Mirren was fantastic, I completely bought her performance, and quite liked James Cromwell too. It seemed to go on for a bit too long...that was probably due to my frequent pausing of the film, though.

I really liked it.

saw Running Scared. It was surprisingly good. Paul Walker proves that he's not just what Keanu Reeves was like without acting lessons.

Deja Vu on cable HD on-demand.

Not at all what the TV ads had me expecting. Here I thought it'd be kind of like "Denzel the recent psychic" running around seeing flashes and whatnot. But no ... instead it's a riddiculous tech-babble time wormhole sort of thing. It didn't completely suck, and Denzel is always nice on the eyes, but I'd say ... mmm ... 5.5/10.

I just took my friend through the first four (Director's Cuts) Star Trek films; it's a long story, but the short version is I wanted to show her David Caruso's acting inspiration: William Shatner. ;) Having promised some over-the-top, stentorian staccato deliveries, I must say Shatner's acting wasn't as totally ham as it was in the series (which has been replaying here in Britain).

I don't know if I'll ever watch them again.
