Aw crap, I hope I don't get shafted. On the plus side, I do get a free upgrade to Vista Premium.

What is the spec of your laptop Lou? Post a link if it helps. The home basic is apparently without even the "cool" features.

Here's a comparison page:

From what I've read, generally if the computer's older than 18 months, chances are it won't be able to run Vista. Anything younger than that should be able, albeit likely needing an upgrade.

I am backing up all my important files before installing. Then I am going to do a clean install, not a upgrade install.

I wont be getting Vista until I cant run the software I need on XP anymore. I love the look of Vista, but its bloated and the copy-protections built into it scare me.

Supposedly one guy has cracked the DRM issue.

Though it seems he is being responsible about it. :)

Being responsible or afraid of litigation?

I wish they'd just write a good operating system and quit trying to play police. Linux is getting more and more user-friendly while Windows is going the opposite direction. I can see myself switching in the next few years at the rate things are going.

I don't think it has anything to do with writing a good operating system or playing police. I think it has more to do with monopolising the distribution and use of digital media. [/scepticism]

Well, I am buying my new PC in piecemeal and I am starting with the OS. So, I will be buying Windows Vista, may the Gods of Computing help me! :o

Better watch it, installing the OS on an old computer and upgrading it after could be a problem. You may find it will not tranfer and get revalidated. I have heard of 3 instaces of this already. (but not with your exact situation) Try the OS last to be safe.

Also, right now, there are alot of problems with custumer service and keys given on the family discount. The keys were bad and Microsoft refused to fix it. I think Vista is a problem child right now. I'll look at getting it..., later.

No, because I'm going to switch to Linux exclusively.

And all advocates of Vista should read this.

Are you aware that if you activate it on the eMachine, you won't be able to activate it on another computer without a MAJOR hassle?

I imagine it won't be any bigger hassle when I transferred my Office programs to the eMachine. Had to call a service rep in India to get it activated. Not that big of a deal.
