Don't watch too much TV but I'm gonna put 'House' as a definite regular and '24' when I get a chance to watch it.

I've been watching All My Children, an American daytime soap. It just happens to be on every day as I'm getting ready to go to work. It's absolutely fascinating. You hear about US daytime soaps in the UK, and you see parodies of them from time to time, but you don't often get to see them for real, or at least I didn't when I lived there. It's bad. It's really really bad, but it's wonderful and completely hypnotic at the same time. You could waste away your whole life watching this stuff. Everything looks so fake; that must be deliberate, surely. And the expressions, and the close-ups... And the plots! These two women have had their babies switched at birth, another one faked a marriage and a pregnancy until her fake pregancy costume was ripped from her in court - who writes this stuff? >_<

OK, getting on to stuff I actually like rather than find morbidly fascinating:

1. Doctor Who

2. Stargate SG-1/Atlantis

3. Veronica Mars

Mostly I watch movies these days. :p

In a league of their own:

Battlestar Galactica

24

Veronica Mars

The Shield

The Wire (so good it's almost painful)

Friday Night Lights

Really good:

Heroes

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

The Office (US)

Boston Legal

The OC

Weeds

Gilmore Girls at it's best (up to season 5) would have placed in the "league of their own" part, but as is it's not even really good.

Bleach

Death Note

Heroes

Closer

Mythbusters

Battlestar Galactica

Smallville

Dead Zone

Monk

Psyc

Lost

In that order. Lost hasn't been too exciting for a while. Second half of season 2 of BSG was not too good. And this third season is intermittent, but hopeful! I rarely catch Smallville, Dead Zone, Monk, or Psyc, but I try to when I get the chance.

Closer is one of those shows that I try to watch with my mom every now and then when I'm down near where she lives. Lost was like that for the first season.

Ii enjoyed the first season of the Wire, and then got hafway through the second before I quit watching. It took me forever to get that far - I normally would become sleepy or get headaches after getting halfway through an episode. It just progresses too slowly. It is decent show, but probably better watched once a week on TV than all in one sitting.

Ive started the new season of Veronica Mars and Ive seen 3 episodes, but it doesnt seem to be very interesting so far.

Lost is getting boring. Theyve created so many mysteries and have left them unanswered for so long that Ive already forgotten most of them and have thus stopped looking forward to the show. I recently read an article about the top 50 Lost mysteries and most of it was stuff I had already forgotten and/or stopped caring about.

Season 6 of 24 looks like its going to be good - theres no way it could be anywhere near as crappy as the previous one. The first two seasons of the series are still by far the best the show has produced.

The Shield is probably the only show out there that just keeps getting better with each season.

Prison Break is OK this season, but the new season is nowhere near as interesting as the first.

Second half of season 2 of BSG was not too good. And this third season is intermittent

Blasphemy! *smites infidel*

I guess I should throw Doctor Who on there, but I have a hard time calling that "ongoing" with the crappy way it is aired in the US.

I lol in the general direction of the same boring American TV shows, can you guys like get out of us foreigners TV sets with your spamm'd stuff. We need time for our own TV channels!!

If your TV shows are so great, then why dont you post them here?

Because they aren't, that is the reason for the lacking local content. Which is good because it is mostly crappy hospital dramas and soapies. Not that I'm having an anti-nationalistic moment as I hear some add for mobile phone porn.

If they were on, my favourites would be StarTrek, Farscape, and Stargate(not Atlantis).

What the hell is NYPD still doing on? David Letterman, the American Iron Chef, and Lost! What crap!

30 Rock.

Same source material as Studio 60 except that its more of a sitcom and half an hour.. and it has few SNL alumni such as Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan and Rachel Dratch.

This isn't necessarily my favourite show but I believe its worth a mention and a view.

EDIT: Is Australian TV just soap opera?

Believe it or not, those are the basic ingredients for a "Comedy" (one of the seven basic plots): disguises, impersonations, endless misunderstandings, etc ... until the finally denouement. It's just an extreme take on the formula. :)
