Magnets can lift anything?

Recommended Posts

I have played with magnets now and then just for fun but always thought metal was just about all a magnet could effect.

I just found out that manetic fields can affect anything! Frogs, water, even fruit is not safe! Strawberries

tomatoes

It would seem to me that we will be hearing more about this in the future. Anyways just though I would share that with you all. :)

This is not an effort to sell anything. I just thought it was cool.

How do I know if they are real? I never thought that would come up, the site has many others of magnets doing all the stuff you would exspect. But who wants to see that? There was more with water but the one I posted is enough. Its quite clear.

As I have not put all the data that I read down - don't think there is a need - mainly because it has LOTS of techical wording :aiee: . I can fill you in on some basics... simplified.

It takes a VERY strong magnet!!! OMG! Averge objects like water only have like .00001% the reponce to magnetism that mangets you play with might have. So you won't be doing this at home. :'(

The frog and other odd ball things you see were just to prove it could be done to all of us none super geeks that can't tell the diffence between stuff the geeks would be using to prove the same point. :">

Air or anything elss you can think of can not acheive what you see but feel free to look for wires. :p

Look, I'll admit some interest in your product. Sometimes I don't feel like cleaning up after my pets shedding, can your magnets help me? Are your magnets easy to store?

Edit: What sort of safety equipment do you offer?

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Unfortunately, with the cost of generating strong magnetic fields (I was told it was around $5k/T), I don't think we'll be seeing it in widespread use anytime soon...

Meh. I'm sure an SFX specialist could think of a few ways to simulate that. Not saying those are fake, though.

What?? CRAP! I already bought a frog I had planned to torture! DAMNIT! :p

magnets primarily effect ferrous materials, i.e. those containing iron (not just "metal"). nearly everything is effected to some degree. wiki has a nice article on it (just search for "magnet").

i must admit, however, that i had always thought magnets effected ONLY ferrous materials, rationalizing that nearly every living critter has iron its body to some extent to explain the frog phenomenon. apparently this was a bad assumption.

no, apparently every element has an associated permeability w.r.t. magnetism. read the wiki article (some of that was news to me, actually).

good thing i'm teaching an electromagnetics course this semester, eh? ;)

So all that abuse hurled at people who wear magnets and by Science theatre 3000 at This Island Earth for the comment about their hands being stuck like magnets was in vain?

I could see some truth in the statements I have heard about magnets helping to deal with pain, as the magnetic field could interrupt electrical signals (I'm not a biologist though), but the "healing" properties of magnets make me laugh.

Even then, the pain killing aspect could just be placebo.

Glad to see I was not the only one that had never seen this b4. :">

The description I have is a simple one. Maybe too simple. But I don't think this is a place for anything long winded.

I don't think you should try this at home. And if you were smart enough to build something that could do this -which is not likely- I would hope you are smart enough not to get yourself hurt.

Plz enjoy this post with nothing more than the "Look at that! Isn't that cool" with which it was created. :p

one of the magnet peddlers is actually being investigated for fraud IIRC.

definitely placebo. the gravity and electromagnetic effects from the earth alone dwarf anything from a simple bracelet.

Don't count on it!

Also, don't forget the Zeeman Effect when you do Quantum Mechanics. :)

If you would destroy evil, do good.

Evil cannot be perfected. Thank God.
