OLGA finally shut down

One of the biggest tabulature sites, OLGA, has been given orders to shut down (see pg1, pg2). People who remember the last thread about OLGA's impending doom will remember that the excuse given is tabs hurt sheet music sales and therefore hurt musicians.

I can understand the sheet music debate since tabs, while not serving exactly the same purpose can be said to infringe on that market share. But musicians? tabs do a lot more good to a musician's lasting fame and contribution than it does harm by miniscule sale obstructions. Furthermore, it's nota s if sheet music for thousands of musicians are available, even online, outside a single country (usually the U.S.) If you live in, say, New Zealand, good luck getting real sheet music instead of tabs.

It's pretty sad, really.

I have found it impossible to find some sheet music.... you would think they would publish an entire Opus not just half. The largest place I can find that sells sheet music is Sheet Music Plus which only has single concerti, if that, it's usually just one movement plus a CD....probably why it's called Sheet Music Plus. (derr) I suppose if your a beginner and if your needing modern or fairly common music, it would be the place for you. But what if your a specialist, what good would that do?

I am hoping Doverbooks will release Vivaldi's La Stravaganza and La Folia, which I should be able to get at Amazon. :)

I think closing down internet tabs is like forbidding people to write descriptions of paintings that other people can read.

DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself.

Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture.

Good analogy.

In my experience, it's rare to find a tab that's actually spot-on. Half of them aren't even in the right key, and even the good ones usually leave out a solo or two. Sheet music should be for if you absolutely have to have every note correct. Tabs were always useful as a starting point, especially for beginners who haven't trained their ear yet to sound out the chords.

Ah well, I guess the future is closer than we think:

Guitar junkie 1: "Hey, Johnny, whaddaya got?"

Guitar junkie 2: "Um, let's see, 'Guinnevere' by CSN, 'Tears in Heaven' and 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right', Dylan song, really good stuff."

Guitar junkie 1: "Dude, that's awesome stuff, can I try that Dylan song."

Guitar junkie 2: "Not until I see what you got. That's the rules, homey."

Guitar junkie 1: "Oh, sure, sorry. Of course, dude. I got 'Blackbird', 'Old King' by Neil Young, 'Spanish Caravan' and, er... 'Smoke on the Water'"

Guitar junkie 2: "'Smoke on the Water'? What kinda crap are you trying to pull on me driving for two hours looking for cops in the mirror and I come down here and you bring 'Smoke on the ******* Water'??? Jesus, I thought you were pro man, **** this. I'm out.

That was a gem worth revisiting. :D
