yeah .. already we are seeing the beginning of boykotts and mild retaliation (internet hackings etc) .. several goverments condeming the insults and several religious figures (in Denmark) calling for a renewed wave of demonstrations and protests ..

The only positive in this is that it seems the political party in question (The Danish Peoples Front) are in a real crisis over this .. even though the are largely known as a racist and anti-islamic party.. I just hope they are wiped off the political map!

For those not informed here is a Story from BBC News:

The row over the latest cartoons in Denmark mocking the Prophet Muhammed has sparked international reaction.

Danish people have been warned against visiting several Muslim countries, after a video showing far-right activists drawing the images was aired.

And a majority of Iranian MPs have urged President Ahmadinejad to suspend relations with Denmark.

Iran and Indonesia have both summoned the Danish ambassador to their foreign ministries in protest of the video.

Activists from the Danish People's Party were filmed at a summer camp, drinking, singing and taking part in a competition to draw images of Muhammad, including one depicting him as a camel with beer bottles as humps.

'Threats'

The Danish government, which condemned the drawings, has warned its citizens to expect "negative reactions" abroad and cautioned travel to the Middle East.

"A militant group in Gaza has made threats against Danes in the Palestinian areas in connection with the [cartoon] matter," the Reuters news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying.

The footage is said to have first been posted on the website YouTube, and then later aired on two Danish television channels.

The Foreign Ministry said that the channels had not broadcast excerpts of the video "to provoke Muslims, but to illustrate the matter".

In Iran, 232 MPs have signed a letter to the president complaining about the video.

Frances Harrison, the BBC's correspondent in Tehran, said the action will increase the pressure on the Iranian government to do more to show its displeasure.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has already condemned those who insulted the Prophet as "low life" and "devoid of human values".

The Ministry of Islamic Guidance there has also called on the Danish TV channel that broadcast the video to apologise for its action.

Violent protests

Security has also been increased around the Danish embassy in Tehran in preparation for a repeat of the outrage shown in February, when protesters threw stones and petrol bombs and some countries evacuated their staff.

On Monday Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen denounced the drawing of the cartoons, in an apparent effort to prevent widespread protests from occurring again.

Iran and Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said the new cartoons insulted Islam.

The publication a year ago of newspaper cartoons - one depicting Muhammad with a bomb in his turban - led to violent protests in which more than 50 people died in Muslim countries.

Danish Muslim leaders, who last year travelled abroad to rally support for their protests, said they would not be provoked by the latest incident, the BBC's religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott reported.

we already are making fun of everyone.. Nothing is sacred here, especially not ourselves.. much to our grief the rest of the world does not share our humor (or lack of)

but unlike the drawing in the "Jylland Post" these were meant as provocation .. since the youth orginisation in question is rather anti-islamic and pretty non-tolerant of foreigners..

Their defending argument is that it was meant as a joke .. an internal joke and not as a provocation intended for the world to see!

Several members have gone in hiding in anticipation of terrorist attacks aimed at them (I personally think they are pulling a political stunt)

Here in the US we generally don't repeat offensive stuff on public media unless we are willing to risk offending the audience. For example, most of the public media has not reproduced the truly offensive bits of the texts of the emails and instant messages from Rep. Foley to Pages. They simply describe the messages to their audience as being offensive.

I wonder if someone were to make cartoons depicting obscene things about the Danish Queen whether:

a) they would find themselves in jail or fined

b) they would find themselves the target of vigilante royalists

c) the cartoons would be aired on the public media in Denmark

d) etc.

Truly, folks need to stop pretending that they are benignly nieve and have no malicious intent when it is perfectly clear that they intend to cause harm and trouble. That includes those who repeat such things.

All that aside, I was pleased at the Danish governments response, and by the response of Danish Muslim leaders and I would wish that more Muslims would not allow themselves to be enraged by these childish provocations. Of course Muslim response will be diverse.

What a shame.

Some unknown irrelevant royalist would call it distateful .. and then that would be it .. I really doubt anyone would be outraged! but the cartoons would definitely be aired on TV..

but let me give you an example .. when you had the whole issue with Janet Jackson showing a taped breast .. our leading TV-station aired a commercial (they paid for) showing a very obese man dancing naked across the screen with the words "****ing Relax!!" written above him .. in response to the reactions in USA .. and no-one in Denmark said it was outragous for that commercial to air (even in prime-time).. So the average Dane is pretty openminded (and indifferent)..

Do you mean that in a sarcastic way, since supporting neo-nazis isn't exactly a good thing.

unfortunately they are part of the goverment .. which means that (even though Danes in no way support racism) it will seems like we've voted in a racist political party!

But it seems things are cooling down just a bit .. even though protesters were throwing molotov ****tails at the embassy in Teheran last night! ;)

The sitting goverment has learned the lesson from last time and are condeming the video and actions of DFU.. which I respect! these drawings weren't made for satire they were made in spite..

The media has decided (for the time being) not to air the video anymore .. until this situation cools down - this could be seen as a loss, since this selfcensur means that the violence and threats have caused us to fear what we say and show.. a loss for Danish way of life..

hmm.. if the world adopted our rather indifferent view on profanity? .. that would be interesting! :p

I simply can't take the middle east seriously, **** em.

What DFU did was silly, but I'd like to vager that if you took at look at the far left communist party "enhedslisten" youth organisation's summercamp, you'd see all sorts of leftist mockery of the US, the Danish PM, the police, Tony Blair even the monarchy maybe.

My point is, these are private events with drunken youths, who do stupid things like every other drunk youth does. The only difference is, so it seems, that if you're right winger, you're not allowed to do stupid things at a private party. :)

And FYI, I do think the DFU is a little extreme, and their leader appears to be a complete jackass, but hey, that's a political youth organisation for ya, some are extreme right wingers, others are anarchist scum.

Just a thought: The west stops drawing rude pictures of Mohammed when the East stops burning effigies of GWB and Tony. Or indeed when our newspapers stop drawing GW as a chimp.

I'm not proGW. That's just how we are here. I mean many in the Mulsim world consider the way our women dress to be offensive. Should we change that?

Hah, I totally baited Hitler back then. And shipped 50 000 jews offseas.

I thought we were talking about Danske Folkpartiet, so I wrote about them. I didn't mean Danes in general, you silly man. :) All you are responsible for is the ability to talk Swedish while eating hot porridge.

While Dansk Folkeparti (which I voted for, mind you) may indeed be nationalistic social democrats in terms of political ideas, they're certainly not neo-nazies with ties to anti-jew skinheads and what not, now that's something they have in large quantities in Sweden, under the pleasant surface of socialist paradise.

Oh and my country saved almost our entire jewish population in WW2, so dont go looking for too many nazi ties around here my friend.

Oh, ok. I've heard different views on that, but I take the word of a native.

Look, I'm not trying to associate Denmark with anything, but you'd do well to consider how much half a decade of politics can change a nation. People forget.
