Are you all a bunch of drunks or something?

Recommended Posts

I got into an argument with this kid. She says that she doesn't respect people who do drugs. Yet, she herself drinks. I told her that it is basically the same thing, and both are unhealthy for you if you abuse them. I told her she was no better than someone who gets high, and that the only reason she thinks the way she does about drugs are because of the enviroment we have been raised in and the social taboos. She said being drunk wasn't bad. Drugs, now they were bad for you. Her argument was that she "Doesn't act like this when she is drunk" and then she grabbed my arm and started to sort of shake me.

Do you think one is more acceptable than the other?

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the galaxy. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips. I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my viens. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk, and free throw. I am there.

Moderation is the key.

Or just not doing any of it in the first place.

She's an idiot who has no real personal morals.

It isn't a question of morals. It's a question of being a hypocrite.

Well of course you think that. You're one of the big hypocrites here.

Does she binge drink like all the cool kids these days do? Calmly explain to her that you can do the same damage to your liver in under ten years binge drinking that an alcoholic does in forty.

Chris scares me...the jiggling...so much jiggling. Strangely hypnotic.

I have few friends who are similar, but I never thought it from that point of view.

I haven't done much by way of class C narcotics in the past. I regularly turn them down. I regularly get drunk. I hope I never do any class A drugs.

Any drug, from narcotics to booze, futzes with your brain. You're taking a risk whenever that happens. Most drugs hurt your body when you try to clean them up. However, lots of things involve risk and damage to your body. I jog, for example, and am significantly more likely to get damaged joints, and may get run over.

Having said that, there isn't an equivalence between booze and narcotics, particularly class As. Class As rejig the hardware in your brain. I would deter anyone I knew from taking them if I could. I know two of my friends who I used to admire, and several years of taking cocaine later I hardly know them. :)

sad fact: 90% of people today are idiots.

Actually, I think that's putting it a little low :)

A friend of mine keeps insisting that stupidity is a public disease.

Not that I disagree with him - I just tell him that we shouldn't presume to be immune ourselves... :)

In the case of drink vs. drugs, I'd say it depends. The kid in the example is, as far as I can tell, obviously completely indoctrinated by social taboos and conventions. The difference is that drinking in moderation is acceptable and generally does not cause permanent damage to your health. Drugs are a different matter, because their effects can be permanent and lethal. Watch the movie "Trainspotting" for a good description - it makes no presumptions and clearly states that taking drugs can be a wonderful experience (instead of all the lecturing and morality, which IMHO is more sickining than the drugs themselves), but also that there is a price to be paid for that experience.

But of course, excessive drinking can be just as devastating and harmful as drugs. You just have to drink awful amounts of alcohol to reach the same effect. But just ask any AA member if that can't be just as dangerous as drugs...

Its easy to drink in moderation, a beer or three in the summer sun with your friends. A big party once in a while. Everyone does it, except people who havent grown out of their geek phase and religious nuts.

Drugs are different beast; more addictive and much more dangerous in both toxicity and the effects on the brain.
