Aspyr Media has announced that Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, the upcoming adventure game sequel from developer Funcom, has gone gold for the PC and Xbox. The press release does not offer a release date but online retail web sites show an April 17 date for the release of the game. Here is a snip:

In The Longest Journey players took on the role of April Ryan, an 18-year-old girl whose destiny was foretold in the prophecies. Having to save the balance between the twin worlds of science and magic, April

Hmm. That reminds me. I was supposed to get a preview code of Dreamfall sent to me. I never did get it. I guess the postal service ate it.

I've played it a little (at a press showing) and it's not very similar to The Longest Journey.. at all. Lots of loading times, pretty choppy frame rates on the Xbox and a control scheme that's.. not very intuitive. They also revealed that it's not possible to go through the game without having to engage in some fighting. Yes, Dreamfall has a fighting system now.

I can't decide if they're sellouts or innovators. I can say that I wasn't overly impressed with what I saw in that realtively early build. My hope is that the story and puzzle parts are good enough to compensate for the weird design decisions they seem to have made this time around.

If the fighting isn't too difficult, and if it's believable, i.e. the character fights when she would realistically fight, and only wins fights that she would realistically win, then I'll be happy. Dreamfall seems to have an adventure core with some fighting added on, so it doesn't fit easily into one single genre. That can indeed go horribly wrong, but you also have to be prepared for the possibility of a good game that the reviewers just don't get.
