How much skill is enough?

Recommended Posts

I finally got around to trying out a Sentinel/Watchman, and I just love the extra skill points. The only thing is, I seem to have put more points into some skills than are really necessary when I could have built up a few more skills.

I worked primarily on Treat Injury, and chose Awareness, Persuade, and Computer as secondary skills. My secondary skills are all above 20 and that's where I think I'm wasting points. For instance, around 10 Awareness seems to be enough for the purposes of finding mines, although I'm not sure if it's enough for certain dialog options. I imagine that 15-20 in Persuade would be more than enough to get through the game.

How about Computer? How much skill is the minimum needed to upgrade T3-M4? If I put my extra skill points into Repair, how many points do I need in Repair to do the other upgrades in T3? Having a Computer skill has proved quite useful as it has opened a number of extra dialog options that really made the game easier.

One interesting observation: I find that one point in Demolitions makes Peragus less annoying. With that, you can blow up the droids after you reprogram them and strip them of parts. That way they're not wandering around getting under foot and you don't have to worry about keeping track of which ones you stripped for parts and which not.

What are your experiences? What are your thoughts?

It depends how much you want to do yourself. Persuade is a key skill, it's also good to have a point in demolitions etc. Being able to make a disintergrator on peragus is quite handy.

levels of 20 in base skills seem like more than enough. You can always use equipment sets for skill boosts. Although as a sentinel/watchman you wont have too.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

For me it's always good to have a high persuade, high awareness, high Demolition, high Repair, and a high Security

I play mostly as a Sentinel. Usually, my highest skills are Persuade, Security, and Computer Use. Secondary, are the Stealth, Awareness, and Treat injury skills.

For the other classes in the game I focus mainly on class skills and leave my parth members deal with the rest.

While Persuade is indeed central, I find that Demolitions is very useful in K2. If you have a high Demolitions skill, you can recover ludicrous amounts of mines beneath the Jekk'Jekk Tarr and on GOTO's yacht. But you do *need* a skill above 20 for that - 20 alone is not enough. I'd say about 24 or so will do. The mines you recover can then later be used other places, sold for cash (as if you need it...), or (more likely) broken down for materials.

Eh, I dunno. Demolitions is something I usually have on my NPCs rather than my main character. Other than blowing up droids on Peragus, there's not really much reason to have Demolitions trained up on your main character. If there are other compelling reasons (e.g. new dialog options, etc.), please let me know.

Truthfully, I spread it out. Basically from the start I usually pick three characters automatically to play the whole game with.

Exile from the start - (Affect/Dominate mind are also good to have) Persuade and Treat injury (Until Force points and Healing are enough to sustain the team). Then its persuade and awareness, which are so crucial for full entertainment of the game. Other skills can be ajusted as you see fit based on how you build your team.

Other characters get split up based on the abilities they start with, and then based on progression (Jedi or not) adjust slighty.

The game is just so much better when you take full advantage of a high stealth, demolitions, computer use and security and to always have equipment that increase those stats significantly.

Endless ways though, no one way is perfect, but as everyone before me has said, Persuade is key.

It is if you play a Sentinel and want to take advantage of Sneak Attack.

Or have some fun before the entrance to the tomb of Freedon Nadd , recovering all those wonderful mines they left for you and...adjusting their position...

Uhm... we're talking about reasons to have Demolitions on your main character, which will never see the inside or outside of that tomb.

Actually he was referring to a good spot to have stealth. And that is a hell of a spot to have it, yes. Also a good spot for demo is in the bar in the entertainment promenade, (why fight the little twits when you can blow them up?) and to mine the walkways to the doors on either side of the main chamber door in the Dxun Tomb. (Yes, on a NPC, but still it's fun watching the ambushers become Ambushees.)

And shepherds we shall be,

for Thee, my Lord, for Thee.

Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,

that our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.

So we shall flow a river forth unto Thee,

and teeming with souls shall it ever be,

In Nomine Patris, et Fili, et Spiritus Sancti.

Eh. I'll let it drop. I don't want this thread to get closed.

You really don't need more than 15 Awareness.

20 base Repair and you can make anything at the bench, so don't need more than that.

Demolitions...eh...15 is enough for the average player if you don't care about missing a little experience or whatever, 20 if you just like being non-dependant on items. I've never had a problem with disarming any mines at 20.

Persuade 15-20, that's the only one that I found to make a big difference in dialogue options showing up.

Security 20, I hate not being able to open doors.

I ignored Treat Injury completely.

As someone above said, there's no need to have them over 20.

If you're interested in specific numbers for things like T3's upgrades, the walkthroughs list those I think. I used to know, don't remember - but nothing over 20.

And if you're playing a Sentinel, you'll have more points than you'll know what to do with by the end anyway. I pretty much always had everything but TI maxed out at 20...course, I was usually lvl 28-32 at the end game.

We all know stealth is not essential at any point of the game. Though its not about success of completion of the game, but rather exploring and enjoying all possible aspects of it. You increase persuade so you can enhance dialogue options. Using stealth with the right force powers, feats and skills can enhance the experience.

But in fairness, its use is limited to the entrance of the tomb of Freedon Nadd, even for that part of the game, you send your 2nd wave with maybe one good character. At which point you can stealth up your lesser characters who should still be at initial levels...so there is a big enough window to enjoy it.

That's true, but you still don't have to pump up stealth on your main character, and what we're talking about here is skills on the main character (sorry, I should have been more clear on that). Of course, you can use your NPCs to cover any skill you lack, except for certain solo missions where exotic skills really don't matter much.

Stealth falls under this as well. Yes, stealth lets you do things, but you can do them with an NPC. The primary reason to put points into stealth is if you have a Sentinel-type character and want to get the most out of your Sneak Attack (which does really nice damage).

i always go with persuade and awareness, some intel. to assist in convos. security and dems i give to other party members, if i need these skills there are some pretty neat items to give me a boost, like the tech specialist belt and skills D-package. i dont do wisdom usually as i like to be a maurader most of the time, and i dont need much force points to get through.
