One thing that is perhaps less obvious given the sepia tone is that the man on the ground appears to be black. Could that be why the adults don't notice him? Tanned, definatley, but from this angle, I would be more likely to say that he is Mexican (or Indian [NA] or maybe just a working man) than Black.
