OBS-4 Discussion (game and roll call)

Recommended Posts

I will be hosting the fourth Diplomacy game, as and when people want to play it.

Feel free to send any correspondence to .

Here are the basic rules.

There is at least one person out there who wants to play a different version. I am happy to host any version, so feel free to debate the variation of the game.

Here are some of the variants. (E.g. there is a global variant that only requires thirteen players, thirty-one player World Diplomacy on a spherical chart, or even a nine player variant of the standard map.)

I still think it would be best to play a standard game, but if you have a suggestion: let's here it!

Any suggestions or problems, please email me (only PM if it's urgent), and we'll work them out.

I will play under the condition that a non standard map be used.

DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself.

Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture.

Jeez Louise, I've created a monster! :p

I don't think I can handle four games. I'll sit this one out, I think.

However, if you do play a variant, I would suggest that you play one from the Variant Bank's Hall of Fame. These ones are supposedly quite well balanced. Personally, I would suggest Aberration or Zeus V-F (which is not listed there, though Zeus IV is).

I really want to give that WW 4 map a shot, so we need more players!

Thirty players is a bit too much.

We could have just 10 and wed get three nations each!

That would certainly give some interesting treaties ... maybe moreso if it were a version of the blind variant, too: where players don't know all the other players' countries, nor all their moves each turn (just the countries adjacent ...)

I was thinking bout that, it doesnt really make sense to reveal the orders of players. I would more realistic if you could oly see the rsults of orders, not the orders themselves

I'm not sure it would. Consider this scenario:

Italy has A Gal, A Vie and A Bud, Russia has A War and A Ukr, and Germany has A Sil.

Now, Germany claims to be allied to Italy, while he is in fact allied to Russia. Russia orders A War-Gal, A Urk S A War-Gal, and Germany orders A Sil S RUSSIAN A War-Gal.

If Italy supports A Gal with both other armies, then the attack will fail whether Germany supports it or not. However, if only the results of the orders are revealed, then the result is that all armies hold in position. This gives no indication of the fact that Germany supported the attack, when realistically, the Italian Army would realise it is being attacked from Silesia.

Though as was said, a veriation of the blind variant where you see the orders of the provinces adjacent to your own and those occupied by you while only seeing the results of those further afield is more realistic, though a heckuva lot more work for the GM, as different reports would have to be sent out to every player.

Not to mention that other than Reveiled, I don't think the other GMs are very experienced at Diplomacy.  They are capable of making mistakes, and with the orders being in the open, we can see the moves were adjucated fairly.

Aww...so you do love me after all. ;):p

Since I won't be participating in this game, though, I would be available as an advisory GM. I'd be able to help with any rules adjudications. If people actually wanted to play a blind variant, I would be willing to examine all the moves in full and assure they go correctly. I wouldn't do it for thirty sets of orders, you understand, but if you decide to play a small blind game (by which I mean about nine countries max), I could chip in. I can help in a larger blind game if the turns are longer. I'd help with WWIV if the turns were once a month, though I doubt you crazy speed freaks would agree to that. ;)

Not coming, even as I was asked. Mostly because I posses no tactical thinking whatsoever.
