Official Playstation 3 pictures

Jesus... I just watched the Killzone 2 trailer. I have never before been excited about a shooter. That changed today.

Instead of a card, maybe it uses internal memory?

I might have read the stats wrong but I don't think they mention any internal memory. The hard drive is an accessory, so I doubt they would rely on that.

Well, well. Nothing new under the sun for Sony either, it seems. The CELL processor sure sounds nice, but we'll leave it up to the developers to find out if it's even possible to program games for 8-9 cores at once.

There's one really good thing about the PS3 though: it uses Bluetooth for its controllers! Got to love that. That means they'll probably use a lot less battery power than the Xbox equivalents. I didn't like the design of the boomerang controller, but I read that those pictures are of the prototypes and not the finished product, so maybe they'll change.

Now we wait for Nintendo's reply. I love this next-generation console war!

As with all new consoles the first generation of games will most probably not even utilise the full potential of the machines as devs get to grips with the new hardware. It would be cool if the controllers came with docking ports to charge when not using them.

I can't determine the resolution from the stats, but it looks pretty damn good.

resolution

Is it just tv resolution, or is there an external monitor option?

it has an hdmi output and supports bluray so the games should be in hi def.

Which is excellent, as i'm fed up of playing console games on big tvs just for it to look fuzzy.

Question about the specs.  I'm not a tech guy to see which is better, but with knowing the specs for the PS3 and Xbox 360, which one has more power; will have better graphics, etc.  I don't want a fanboy's answer though.

Based on pure computational power, I'd say the PS3 clearly beats the Xbox 360. But I'm sure we'll find out what the real deal is when the developers start messing around with these two machines and we'll find out if it's possible to take advantage of the technology or not. I read somewhere that the reason why there hasn't been almost any multi-core processors until now is because they're very difficult to write code for.

If the specs are correct, then the PS3 has a faster processor than the Xbox 360, PS3 has faster internal memory, faster graphics card (with MUCH more dedicated video RAM), much bigger DVD capacity (PS3 blu-ray is supposed to be able to store 54 Gb on a single disc, as opposed to 9 Gb for a dual-layer ordinary DVD) and it will support Bluetooth (yey!), USB and a removable HD. It seems the PS3 beats the Xbox 360 on almost all accounts.. on paper.

We're probably gonna have to wait a while after both consoles are out to see the real differences between them. These figures can be manipulated and the kind of performance they quote may actually be impossible to achieve in real game development.

Nevertheless, these specs for the PS3 are very impressive. Before, I was quite sure I wanted an Xbox 360. After this, my favour has been swung towards the PS3.

Is it just me, or does the controller look like a vibrating d*ldo :D

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I never thought about owning a console before, being in love with my computer, but the PS3 tempts me.

I guess the major selling point would be that its backwards compatible for me. I get to go back and play all the great games for the PS1 and 2 that I missed out on.

To the point about how easy it is to program for, the guys making Unreal Tournament 2k7 say its great. Actually all the devs who actually said anything about the ease of programming said it was quite easy.

As far as those performance numbers are concerned, there is a lot of BS being thrown about by the marketing departments of both Microsoft as well as Sony. Of course, we all know them well enough to take the numbers with handfuls of salt, but in this case you would require several truckloads to even approach the sheer levels of exaggeration these idiots are using.

2.18 teraflops my a**.

Let me do some simple math for you. Let's take the X360 as an example. 1 teraflop = 1000 billion floating point (FP) operations per second. The console sports 3 PowerPC cores running at 3.2 GHz, which implies 3.2 billion cycles per second. To achieve 1 teraflop, the system as a whole would thus have to perform 1000/3.2 = 312.5 FP operations per CPU clock cycle (anyone with a modest idea about microarchitecture would be rolling on the floor by now). High-end Power5 cores used on $500K servers can probably churn out 4 FP ops per cycle (and I'm being *ridiculously* optimistic). Let's assume IBM was generous and put 3 of these uber-cores into the X360 CPU, and Microsoft ships the console with your own personal hydroelectric power station. This gives the entire X360 CPU 4*3 = 12 FP ops per cycle. Oops! ATi now has to somehow come up with 300.5 more FP ops per CPU cycle (I'm assuming, of course, that marketing is stupid enough to *add* CPU and GPU flops to come up with the overall system throughput).

Honestly, I don't know much about GPU architectures, but here's an attempt to figure out how un-achieveable that 300.5 number is. Now, the ATi baby runs at 500Mhz. In order to measure up to 300 FP ops per *CPU* cycle, it will have to perform 300 * (3.2/0.5) = 1920 FP ops per GPU cycle. With 48 pipelines, *each pipeline* will have to churn out 1920/48 = 40 FP ops per GPU cycle. That, my friends, seems to me to be complete nonsense. Unless, of course, the thing is a 40-stage pipeline, and the idiots are counting each pipeline stage as an "FP op".

Supercomputer in a console, my a**.

Not that I'm saying the systems aren't powerful. The configurations are indeed impressive, and the demos looked fabulous. The PS3 demos were simply jaw-dropping. The amount of compute power in those consoles is immense -- significantly more than previous-generation consoles, and noticeably more than current-generation desktop PC's too. And the fact that they will be sold in < $500 price ranges is simply amazing. But what's disgusting is these cheap attempts to quantify performance with imaginary numbers. Nobody *wants* a supercomputer in their living room, people want a console that plays their games beautifully. And, by golly, these machines do an amazing job at that. So why give us all this BS?

Funny, none of the screenshots of the PS3 games are actual Ingame footage or something similiar... It hasnt impressed me yet. More impressed with Xbox 360

They're all using the in game engine, but not actual game footage. None of it is pre-rendered, its all real-time.

If this is actual in-game footage the PS3 will leave Xbox360 for dead, graphically.

Most people think it's pre-rendered though.

I'm sure the consoles will be fine for people who like to play that kind of game. I just found that disturbing, and the better the graphics get, the more disturbed I feel.

Because utter and complete nonsense continues to succeed in impressing large portions of the playerbase. Far larger portions than are disgusted by it. Whether or not nonsense hype is intentional or whether exaggeration is considered to be part of the game by marketing, it seems there's every reason to believe that outright bold-faced, intentional lies regarding hardware architecture are a largely beneficial and advisable marketing tactic at present.
