Which is faster

Do you mean PCI or the new version called PCI express ? PCI cards are slower than AGP but although the new socket design of PCI Express is faster than AGP but it doesnt automatically mean a PCI-E card is faster than a AGP card.

 

If you need advice on getting a new graphics card then you need to post details of your CPU, Motherboard, RAM and what you are prepared to spend.

So far you have 3 different slots: PCI, AGP, PCI express. They are all the same, basically a modified PCI slot, only with different bandwidth. The order of bandwidth, from worse to better, is: PCI, AGP, PCI express.

pcie is "technically faster" but its kinda new so it hasnt been fully explored yet

of course a X300 PCIE is not faster than a 9800PRO AGP so the rule "PCIE faster than AGP" doesnt apply, at least not in " graphical meaning " but if the PCIE has a bigger bandwith then it means that it could be faster if the whole bandwith of the PCIE was used

What is interesting is that at the current time, game devs don't even use half of the AGP bandwith available (4x, 8x).

 

They don't.

 

The day they start using all of that and then start squeezing more out of PCI-E... We're going to be getting close to cinema, CGI photo-realistic graphics like you see in Star Wars and LOTRS...

Much bandwidth is only useful when game engines start using much bigger 3D-environments where data must be transfered permanently.

 

Another competing approach to implement this is to increase the RAM size of a graphics card. Up to now this was the current trend, because RAM becomes cheaper everyday.

 

Indeed, both of the concepts maxed out in a single graphics card may be a little bit too much power. At least for current games, a card with PCI-Express and 256MB RAM is practically more than you would need.

The only way PCI-Express beats out an AGP 8x slot is if you are using 2 identical PCI-E cards. Each PCI Express slot runs in a 8x mode so doubling them up gives you the 16x speed that PCI Express is capable of. But one on one I don't think you would see a HUGE difference between 1 AGP card or 1 PCI Express card.

Technically PCI-E 16x is faster than AGP 8x, of course.

 

But the situation you describe is true, though.

Many graphics card can't handle the full 16x speed, because they can't receive more texture data than they can process. Using a second card would be a possible (but costly) solution here.

Additionally, the games of today don't use the bandwidth feature as much as the memory solution (=loading the complete level into RAM).

That is why you still don't see much difference.
