Press the 'Print Scrn' key, then open Paint (or other graphics programme) and Paste the screenshot.

Paint is usually in the Start Menu under Accessories. Pressing 'Print Scrn' doesn't actually create an image file: you need to paste the image into Paint and then save the file from there.

When you press "Print Screen" on your keyboard, it copies what is currently being displayed on your monitor, to the clipboard. At this point, there is no file generated or saved yet. That's why you have to open a raster graphics program like Pain, Paint Shop Pro, or Photoshop to copy an image into.
