World Of Warcraft Player Discussions

Decided yesterday to take a look at WoW. Never studied it before.

If I do buy game, it'll take me awhile to get used to it. The rule system is very foriegn looking. I'll probably stop by here alot to ask advice from my Obsidian (Black Isle) buddies.

So far I'm considering a Elf Rogue Engineer, maxed out in Subtlety.

I do have two questions tho...

1) Can you put BOTH primary skills in Engineer...so that you can get BOTH the Gnome and Goblin specialties?

2) Is there a non-pay area, on disk, or on a free server, you can conduct at least crude practice with the character?

Lastly, saw that Mages don't have Invisibility in latest Blizzard version. Forums show alot of players trying to vote it back in (it apparently existed in Beta), but they are unsuccessful so far. It saddened me to hear that about the class. NWN servers are anti-magical-undectectability as well lately, so its becoming a trend. Slowly, the foundations of Gary Gygax's 1973 view on mage classes is being buried.

No. As a blacksmith you have to choose between making armour or weapons, so I think all professions have to make a choice at one point.

No, unfortunately not.

The beauty of WoW char development is that you can experiment around without starting a new char. It does become costly after a while to change your builds, but there isnt the annoynce of starting a new char if you screwed up with your talent selection, or you simply want to try a new playstyle for your char.

A few screenies from the last day of the beta, The Day of Judgement:

Stormwind is being attacked by demons:

The fighting reaches its peek, with two Felguard Elites wreaking havoc:

You pay by the month, not by connect time so practice time isn't really an issue. My copy came with the first month free and a code that a friend who installed it on their computer from my discs could use to get 10 days free playtime. My husband got mine, but perhaps you know someone who'd be willing to give you their guest pass so that you could test drive the game before you buy.

Wow, I got a pretty good email today, telling me that I'm getting the retail version of World of Warcraft sent home to me tomorrow, with a press-pass that allows me to play the game for free for 6 months! Also, since we're friends with the PR-guy, he added that it would be no problem to pro-long the account if we needed more time

Looks like I'll be playing World of Warcraft after all! Woo!

Bought WOW last Wednesday.

Game is fun. Interface, esp the view interface, is slightly stiff (compared to NWN).

Currently I'm on a pay-type Normal server...called Khadgar ( which the "recommended" button sent me to).

1st thing I did was add 3 levels, then I spent 14 hours swimming along the coasts ( plus a lucky by chance ship crossing) to get to Ironforge City( located on a different continent across a ocean)...to get my crossbow training and gear. I figured swimming underwater far from the coast would keep hostile encounters ('Aggros'..as WoW calls them) to a minimum, which it did very well. Game designers didn't figure on that kind of travel I suppose (saw a ocassional shark and warrior-crab rarely tho).

Presently at lvl 11 Rogue, and feeling the money pinch on my potential.

* ? To other pay-server type WoW'ers on this forum: What servers are you on? And what's your character name and class?

After I get used to this game I'm ganna make a second Primary character and find a permanent PvP server to call my home. And it would be more fun to be playing with forum members I am familiar with. They could influence what home server I decide on later on.

If anyone is interested in buying WoW, but wants to ask questions about it, feel free to post questions/concerns to me. Game setup and interface wasn't completely easy, so you might get stuck like I did a few times.

Imryll, Night Elf Druid on Cenarion Circle. Currently level 24--and still catching her breath after yesterday's not entirely successful, but very fun, jaunt to Blackfathom Deeps, her first venture into an instance. I play primarily solo, but have grouped more than I expected. There's a good forum community on the WoW site--including forums for the individual realms (aka servers) where you can get to know some of the people you'll encounter in-game.

There are opportunities for PvP even on normal and role-playing servers, of which CC is one. You can accept or extend invitations to duel, and there are a variety of ways in which your character can earn a (temporarily) PvP enabled flag. Horde and Alliance raids are regular events.

My server is called Turalyon. I have no idea why or what that means.

I'm a level 25 paladin, and I just finished Van Cleef (Deadmines instance).

So it seems Outland is to be added in an expansion. Well actually its already there as some guy with a thousand hacks discovered. I guess this means Blood Elves as a playable race and possibly Naga, though I doubt you'll be able to put trousers and shoes on a Naga. I'm not that impressed with Outland as a setting, it didnt do much for me in The Frozen Throne and it probably wont in WoW. I'd much rather they put Northrend in first. Anyway heres the link to a thread with a video, thers a link on page 20 that works as of now.

Beware - Bnet forums

We now bring you live footage from the World Championship Staring Final.

That quest is extremely poorly designed and I wish Blizzard would fix the decay time on Van Cleef's body.

Exactly why do you think the quest is poorly designed? I can't remember any part of it that made me puke or anything. And if you play a paladin, those leggings (Westfall chausses) are really worth the trouble!

Oh, and the first time I saw the endzone of that instance, I was really impressed! It was nothing as I had expected. It was better! Also, if you swim around the mountain on the outside, you can actually find the huge gates seen in the end of Van Cleef in the Stranglethorn Vale zone. Very nicely thought out.

Exactly why do you think the quest is poorly designed?

1) The quest is green for a character even when every creature in the instance is grey to the same character.

2) Van Cleef will summon mobs even after he's dead.

3) Van Cleef's body is set to decay extremely rapidly, even if no one has looted his body. If you die during the fight with Van Cleef, you will not get his head.

Warning: Lag periods on WoW servers. Please keep backup internet games at the ready.

*********************** This is no drill *****************************

Horde have been organizing 25 + player invasions on outlying outposts and towns. They kill the guards, and then form up into a compact circle formation...or just a dense circlular group in center of invaded area. Then...they stay for about half a hour, by which time counterattacks become too heavy, or server shuts down for repairs.

The real bad news is...during these attacks, players can only move their cursor one second every four seconds. Avatars on your screen will be frozen, showing no movement. Any chat you send won't show up untill after a 3 minute delay has passed.

Blizzard's last patch (about 3 days ago) claimed they tried to solve problem, but it hasn't. Yes, their world is "seemless". Yes, you'll find world populated with more internet players than a subway station during rush hour. Yes, game is generally populated by polite and considerate blokes. But..Horde vs Alliance conflicts are a Blizzard server admin's worst nitemare.

But, thats what the games about right? A war between Horde and Alliance. Tho plain ol' fun is of course the goal of any game....its the above theme that the game is about...isn't it?

We'll, at least Blizzard is under the hood trying to fix it. But I'm wondering if maybe their servers aren't as fiber-built as they should be. Comon Blizzard...use that money to buy Nortel Network fiber servers...it not for buying a Mercedes for your co-workers.
