I need help for BG1, please

I installed BG1 a few days ago on my pentium 3 and I can say that the game is more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Before that, I was playing this game on my father's laptop (a pentium 2) and it looked kinda ugly. Anyway, I considered using BGtutu, but I prefer to keep the original spirit of the game (the way it was designed to be played). Besides, there are some good bugs in it: for example, there is a unique spell that you can't find in BG2 ("wraith form"= immunity to non magical weapons for a certain duration), or when I dual-class my fighter to a mage, I can choose to become a specialized wizard.

Now, everyone knows the advantages of being a specialized mage, but a problem occured to me: I don't have the manual with me right now and I can't remember which spells cannot be learned by my character when I pick a specific school of magic. I do remember that an Illusionist cannot learn necromancy spells, but that's all.

Can anyone help me with this, please? I checked all of the CDs, but I can't find the manual. I also welcome any suggestions for my characters (as to which school of magic I should pick). I just wanted to let you know that I will dual-class Imoen too, so I have to find 2 different schools of magic for variety. Moreover, I have Dynaheir in my party (I love spellcasters).

Cheers.

Fortunately, I managed to find the collector's edition (original BG + TotSC) 2 years ago. Actually, that was the only available edition of the game and I am glad I decided to buy it back then. A friend of mine started recently buying all the IE games, but he didn't manage to find BG1 anywhere.

Anyway, I do intend to multi-class my character and imoen at level 7, and I decided to make both of them conjurers as divination spells suck (therefore the loss is just minor).

It's not hard to play BG2 with a single character. I created a kensai (lv9) / mage (level 17) and he almost did everything in the game. I remember beating the red dragon just with him.

I am gonna tell you another crazy thing I am thinking of doing in BG1: I am gonna dual class Dynaheir at level 6 to a cleric. According to my calculations, she will become a level 6 invoker / level 8 cleric. You see, I don't have many healers in my party (only jaheira so far)...

I wouldn't go dual class mage in BG1, cuz the level cap is too low.

Anyways, I've always prefered pure mages, without any multing or dualling. That's my rolepplay style.

It's just me tho.

I dual classed Imoen and she turned out great. I forget what the level split was, something like 6th thief and the rest mage. It proved to be a very good choice and it made her an excellent asset to my party of four.

Interesting. I didn't know she had a WIS score high enough. As for good healers, if you yourself aren't a Cleric, Yeslick is an excellent addition to the group.

Initially, she doesn't, but you can raise it to 17 by making her read the Tomes of Understanding.

exactly...

For some reason, everytime I try to start BG I just get bored fast and uninstall everything. Last time I played, got as far as Cloakwood(or was it?) and then just stopped playing. I think I've never seen city of Baldur's Gate eventhough I'm a huge Infinity-fan.

Yeah I tried to replay BG1 recently. I dislike the graphics and resolution now adays and get frustrated by the random encounters - the Cloakwood random encounters vs Ettercaps, spiders and wyverns take the piss however you look at them, particularly as I often travelled not on full health and not having rested to relearn the spells from the previous map. The biggest concern though is the fact that level 1 characters attack so slowly (1 attack per round = long nap times in between each swing) and when they do swing they can't hit a barndoor let alone those annoying blue Svibnerf things that attack you with such irritating battle cries!

Personally I prefer playing BG1 and then installing TotSC. You get to exploit all the bugs that way - oooh nice swords Dribble (or is it Drizzt - I never can remember  ) I'll take both. And nice 2nd tome of wisdom High priestess of Umberlee - I'll just kill u and take it back!

BG2 requires the same approach in my opinion. I hate the opening dungeon (Irenicus' base in Athkatla) and dislike intensely some of the changes caused by the ToB add-on. The cloak of reflection is rendered almost completely useless but then they negate this anyway by putting in the shield of Balduran (what is the point of pruning one item to give all its advantages to another!) Bugs in ToB require a patch or else seem really ridiculous. (my first playthrough involved me encountering and defeating three seperate version of the same lich - the one in the bar in the gate section of Athkatla. Every time he tried to cast a spell I would retreat to prevent it effecting my party - I did this twice, retreating into the main section of the pub and then again out into the street - he followed me each time and when I killed him I headed back in to find clones waiting for me in both the pub and the crypt! - I got 3x very useful wands though!)

I wanted to replay BG2 again recently but the first file needed from CD3 (on all three types of installation) is corrupted (there are almost minute scratches on the disk) and I cannot complete the installation.

Maybe if Phospur isn't interested enough to replay BG2 he might want to give me his CD3 ~hint hint~

The first time I played BG/TOSC the random encounters really bothered me, but on my second play-through some years later, I really had fun. I quite liked my party (PC Halfling Cleric, Alora, Ajantis and Imoen - I had Coran before Alora) finding they worked extremely well together and gave a nice dynamic, so I had fun with them. A four-piece seems more manageable and engaging than the six-member juggernaut.

Whenever I do try and play BG2, I use the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod to avoid Chateau Irenicus, but even then I get bored. I don't like any of the NPCs, the quests are dull, and I just don't have fun.

Last time I went to play though I found out my TOB disc no longer read, so that pretty much ended that endeavour. And no, I'm still not giving away my discs

That's what I did when I went through the game the first time. It makes her very effective.

Here's my party in BG1: me (fighter/mage), imoen (thief/mage), minsc, khalid, jaheira and dynaheir (invoker/cleric).

The reason I picked these characters is because I wanted to have some kind of continuity between bg1 and bg2. When you start BG2, it is suggested that you got caught with those guys. Therefore, I assumed that it was normal to play the first game with them in my party. Moreover, I do believe that imoen, minsc and jaheira are MEANT to stay in your party until the end of the saga, as you get to see their faces even in the ending movie. Besides, why would BIO bother making them appear in the sequel? I suppose that they are your loyal friends until the very end...

In BG2 SoA, I almost had the same party configuration: I replaced Dynaheir with Aerie and Khalid with Yoshimo (I couldn't stand losing that great guy, so I helped him cheat death for a while; the interesting part was that when I found myself and my party in the nine hells, Yoshimo said something like "I never thought I would go to hell" or something like that).

In BG2 ToB, I replaced Yoshimo with Sarevok (whom I dual-classed to a mage at level 17 and he really worked after that with time stop and wail of the banshee).

Having first played BG2, I wanted to keep a character similar to Aerie in the first game, and that is why I dual-classed Dynaheir to a cleric).

^ Those are good reasons :)

My party is usually me (Fighter dualed Mage) Imone (Thief dualed Mage) Jaheria, Khalid, Kivan and Safana (who's just perfect for Durlag's Tower)

Suffice to say that one random encounter in BG2 involving her really pisses me off :)

As much as I like Minsc, I just can't keep him past saving Dynaheir in BG1... I like stealth and ranged attacks too much :p

Hmm.. he's supposed to die right? Why did they add things like "I never thought I would go to hell" if they planned for Yoshimo to die? Is there a way to prevent his death w/o cheating?

Damn, I just looooove BG2!

I love Irenicus's dungeon. For the first time it's okay. A bit dull, but hell, the first cutscene is great! I mean, I somehow simphasized with IRenicus... I found him one of the best charismatic villains EVER - best in all games I played. Just great. The voice, so calm, so ice-cold... great work - actors/designers.

And all other NPCs were amazing! The best NPCs are in BG1/BG2 that's for sure! Even Torment pales in comparison.

Damn, when they fight each other it's so fun!

Korgan is great! SOme really great phrases of his... like:

"Well, excuse me, then, perhaps I should be guttin' ye with me axe an' then ye'll worry less about yer precious ale, aye?"

Minsc - well, it's one of the funniest NPCs ever! No comment.

Aerie.... oh such a sweet girl.... I mean, pure good and beauty... so naive tho.

But most importantly, tis the story that makes BG2 really Great! It's really gripping..... it's not cliched, although not so very extreme, yes, but it's really well-written. (except for ToB which story is nonexistent)

Also, the "stronghold" feature is cool. I really liked having my own Planar sphere, with my own golem and apprentices..... and Druid's Grove?! My goodness, it's STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL!

Speaking of which, I have always belived that BG2's environment graphics were one of the best out there. Much better than in NWN, for insance. It's prerendered, and it's really beautiful.

BUT character models...... well, player characters I really didn't like..... kinda ugly some of them.... but monsters and special npcs (Jonnny) were superb.
