In KOTOR the lightsaber fights were very well done, almost looking as fast-paced and exciting as the films. In TSL we can expect more 'boss' fights against the sith lords and probably their apprentices.

 

Obsidian has added many new animations to the combat feats which should make the fights even more visually exciting.

 

So what makes the lightsaber battles in KOTOR so good? And what can TSL add to the experience?

 

I really liked how when you fought Malak the music would switch pace depending on what you were doing. When you were running around it went slower, then when you engaged Malak the music sped up. This made it seem very cinematic.

i seem to remeber hearing that when shooting lightsaber fights in epi 1 ewan mcgregor and jake loyyd had to be told to stop 'creating the sound effects themselves and leave it to the specialists' hehe i could imagine them vwhingin and vwhooshing :)

KOTOR lightsaber fights are lame if compared to superb battles from Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy where you really have total control not few automatic moves only

i agree completely lightsaber duel animations were pathetic, something which is being adressed in kotor 2 apparently

Isn't that kind of apples and oranges? Two very different battle systems for two very different styles of game.

True in jedi outcast you had direct control whereas in KOTOR you sat back and watched. But KOTOR had people jumping,turning around and kicking. More like a film.

 

The end fight in KOTOR was way better, and far more epic-scale and longer ( in 'jedi outcast' you can beat Desan in 5 seconds if you know how.)

Yep, LOVED the finishing move with Dualbladed Lightsaber after getting the enemy fall on ground. :p

Agreed. That would be like comparing Fallout and Doom3 and saying Doom3 is better because the graphics look better.

tru but you still have to admitt for each type of attack there was only one animation, the only variation came when blocking enemy attacks

 

Where that's true it doesn't seem fair to try and use Jedi Knight's battle system against Knights.

 

They weren't meant to be close,it wouldn't have worked to try and do so. Knights is an RPG where the Jedi Knight series is 1st/3rd person action.

 

JO/JA's system having more control doesn't make it "better" then Knights. They're in different groups. JO/JA's were great for the 1st/3rd person style of games. Knights,did over use the animations,but was still great for the RPG group that it was in.

 

Sith Lords is not going to have direct JO/JA battle system. The system is going work pretty much the same way Knights did,just with more moves placed into it.

The moves.

 

I don't care how good the music is, if the moves look crappy, the lightsaber duel will look crappy.

 

Yeha it was the moves, i not teh noises too much either, becasue teh lightsaber fighitng noises never change, they are pretty much the same in every game and film so it the moves that set a game apart action wise.

 

One of the things i did not liek about KOTOR was that sometimes there was liek a 3 secodn delay inbetween turns, liek if the opponent is paralysed and u complete an attack, the PC jsut sits there for 3 seconds then continues his next round of atacking, that was dumb

I'm not sure that can be avoided with a turn-based combat system. I think Obsidian has said they're trying to cut down on the "lag", but I don't think it's possible to eliminate it completely.

I liked kotors fighting and the new moves you aquire should make it better....

 

As for Jedi Academy, few games have let me down more

the combat was way too easy once you got the moves down, the powers where all pretty weak all eight of them(besides the "core" powers) and the choice to go dark side, light side was pathedic, Maybe the worst cinematics ever

Ya at first, but if you attack and then switch saberstyles usually they died pretty quick

I liked kotor's cinematics, even if it didn't seem realistic sometimes. In my opinion, games like Ja turn the lightsaber, one of the most elegannt weapons ever created, into a cumbersome weapon with all the cutting ability of a butter knife.

 

Kotor actually had true lightsaber fights when people blocked spun and parried. It was very polished and a welcomed change to the katarn games.
