French Election, why it matters

Yesterday Macron and Le Pen had the normal French presidential debate  before the final round of their election process and thankfully Macron came off as the most convincing in the polls afterwards with 59%

This is good news for a Macron victory. Why do we want a Macron victory? These are the main reasons to be opposed to Le Penn

  • she has threatened to take France out the EU which would weaken the EU and its sustainability going forward ( she has backtracked on this in this election campaign )
  • She is anti-Globalization and the free trade agreements of the EU
  • she has a history of extreme anti-immigration views. I support immigration control but not what she suggests

But saying all that I am interested in what people think, do you want Macron to lose and if so why? And if you support Le Pen why do you support her?

Choosing between Macron and Le Pen is like picking between cholera and dysentery. No matter who you vote for you'll end up sh*ting yourself, but at least one of the options comes without blood in the stool. Not sure what this is going in a separate thread, it's not like the politics one is currently featuring a raging debate that would threaten to drown this subject otherwise. :shrugz:

Le Pen winning will make the year more interesting, so will go for that.

As @Malcador said, a Le Pen win would be so much fun to watch unfold, especially watching the heads of Western elites exploding, but for me her plan to withdraw France from the NATO military command structure and her pro-Putin/anti-Ukraine positions are just too stupid to accept.

Macron winning will trigger mass protests in France. There are already a bunch of protest happening in Paris, it's just that no one is reporting on them.

Doesn't everything trigger protests in France? France not protesting would be newsworthy

Can't wait for the media to spooj themselves over another 'landslide' Macron election win and how that means everything is right with the world; a win with... historically low voter turn out and a staggering 1 in 8 people actually bothering to turn up just to spoil their ballot.

Shame it isn't Le Pen vs Melléncon, as I forgot to make my quadrennial Jean-Cougar Mellencamp's joke as that really would have had the global elites' heads exploding.

Is Melenchon the French equivalent of Bernie Sanders or something?

Sarex I share your concern with the level of violent protests in France, remember all the  economic damage and disruption the Yellow vests caused. The protestors in France fall into different categories that include socialists, anarchists, anti-establishment  people and " stinking, Commie subversives "

The radical  left is very influential in France but as long as the French riot police are ready with teargas and rubber bullets we should be alright when Macron wins ?

Man, it wasn't even remotely close. Not that I wanted LePen to win in any way, but that is really lopsided.

It is bit closer than in last time when Macron won LePen  66% - 34%

Only reason why there was doubt was that left wing voters don't like Macron at all, there was question if they don't vote at all or if they give protest votes for LePen, but it seem that most of them hate LePen even more than they hate Macron.

It will not be easy five years for Macron considering that Political field is pretty much split three almost equal size parts and voters confidence towards classical parties is almost zero. So France political field most likely will see big changes in incipient election cycle

58%... a recipe for a politically stable future... 🙄

At least this time only 8.5% of people bothered to turn up just to spoil their ballot, that's 1 in 12 instead of 1 in 8 last time. I'm still quite impressed that that many people would turn up to make a paper airplane from or draw smiley faces on the ballot paper instead of just... not turning up.

Though of course the number who didn't bother voting went up by 2.5% in absolute terms, so you had almost exactly the same historic high level of disengagement in total.

As in the US, it sounds like many people turned up just to vote against the other guy. Another strike against plurality voting. Not that the victorious parties care.

For what it's worth, I'm glad that Macron has won, however, it's way, way too close for my liking. Almost the half of france doesn't seem to have issues with having a right wing, russian pupped as their fuhrer.

Absolutely, their was only one candidate if you believe and support Constitutional Democracies anywhere in the world and the  freedom that this type of government brings

And since we all live in Constitutional Democracies and we all believe in things like human rights, freedom of speech and free and fair elections Macron was the only candidate to support

Thats why I suggest everyone goes to their local supermarket and buys some sort of French product, I bought Roquefort cheese on Saturday, as a tribute towards this appreciated French election results

Remember what the alternatives are, Putins war has shown us the brevity of sovereignty and Democracy

None of us want to live in a world where the likes of Le Penn and Putin define how geopolitics exist

That is done over here too. By invalidating your ballot you split the vote to all the candidates and make it impossible for anyone to steal your vote.

On Saturday I had a choice of what blue cheese to buy from the UK, Germany, Denmark and France. I chose France as part of the anticipated Macron victory....you can do the same?
