I'm not sure what you think will happen, unless you just remembered what Bartimaeus and I were talking about when we watched Utena. If you don't, then it's probably not what you think right now.

That's three Mikis in a week. Let's hope stopwatch Miki comes out better.

Boy-Miki has less problems going forward. That is, if he could actually take a step forward in the first place. That's the thing with the duelists. You can come back to this sentence when you're done and it will make sense.

Anyways episode 6 happened. There seems to be a high number of animals who get loose at that school. DIO's sister is still a bitch.

Nanami is like the worst. The worst. However, the episodes she appears prominently in are usually some of the funniest.

Why would you do that, she's such a nice doormat.

Yay, I finished it.

EVANGELION 3.33: THE GIGA SHADOW AWAKENS. Almost.

Where to begin? Perhaps with the one positive point. Unlike the other two, this felt - structurally, at least - like a movie, instead of the hot mess you get when you cram 24 episodes worth of content into two 105 minute films. Freed from the shackles of serialized storytelling in a 25 minute format, the movie then does... absolutely nothing with it. The pacing is still a mess, going from nigh-unfollowable fast paced, chaotic action to an absolute dead crawl that feels like half an hour (it probably is), only to culminate in another "hey almost" sort of Near Third/Third/Fourth/Final Impact where a whole lot of things that were never set up suddenly pay off.

Okay, so the film begins with Zev/Xev "Mari" Bellringer and Asukai rescuing Stanley "Shinji" Tweedle, because only Stanley has the key to the Lexx, which makes him an annoying, yet sadly necessary member of the crew.

For those who don't know, and I presume for a bit that's all of you seeing the lack of comments from the last time I made these posts, here are the characters involved:

Zev, or Xev? I think I'll let you pick whom you like more. The problem with Zev is that she's the only female character on Lexx, aside from the ship herself, so she gets to do all the fanservice on her own. And that's actually - quite literally - her sole reason to exist. She's more agressive like Asuka, but eh... in that case we need to turn Asuka into a creepy undead assassin. That doesn't work, but neither does this film!

zev-bellringer-85942f29-6c4c-4f85-99e8-0lexx-xenia-seeberg-xev-bellringer-01-dvd

I can already hear you go "NANI?" at this, but bear with me. Zev, or Xev - and for the love of god never google Xev Bellringer because that apparently is not only a character name in Lexx but also a porn star name that tracks much higher on google search results than an obscure German/Canadian sci-fi show from the late 90ies, and I just found that out the hard way looking for that second image.

Why are there two? Well Eva Habermann eventually got fed up playing the fanservice girl and they replaced her with Xenia Seeberg. Zev gets absorbed/eaten by Lyekka after her death. Lyekka is a sentient plant consuming humans or whatever comes into her clutches by invading their minds and becoming something desirable. Anyway, to get the crew to allow her to stay on, she consumes Zev and transforms her into Xev. Yay!

Zev's entire raison d'etre really is fanservice. That's because her character was designed to be this way. Originally an undesirable woman on a remote planet, she disrespected her arranged husband after he said he doesn't want her, by punching him in the face. The clergy can't have that, so she is sentenced to being transformed into a sex slave, a procedure involving physical alteration into a desirable woman with extremely heightened libido as well as mental programming making her obedient (well, madly in love to the point of doing anything) to whoever she first encounters.

Except in Zev's case it goes wrong, she is not only transformed into Fanservice-Girl, she's also fused with a bit of cluster lizard DNA (terrible creatures who enjoy eating human flesh), and the mental programming is actually transferred to 7-90, a robot head. 7-90 spends the rest of his life pining after Zev, but can of course not do anything, being a robot. Well, only a robot head.

Zev is reall into Kai, but Kai has a small wrinkle. Or rather, a not very hard wrinkle, because he's undead and with no blood circulation has a hard time getting it ha...rd. Wow. And you know what? That sentence isn't nearly as bad as this film was.

Kai

fd173be444a911ba78af5a14d42cd6bb.jpg

Well, he'd fit right into any anime, huh?

He's the last of the Brunnen-G, a reminder that His Divine Shadow kept as reanimated corpse to mock the prophecy that the Brunnen-G will be his downfall. It's a pity, really, beacuse... nowhere in the prophecy it was stated that the last Brunnen-G needs to be a alive to kill His Shadow. That's what you get for mocking, Shadow!

The Divine Predecessors (aka SEELE):

hqdefault.jpg

The brains of previous Divine Shadow hosts serve as a council for His Divine Shadow, at least until they're loaded onto the Lexx and Stanley, Zev and Kai abscond with it.

Finally, this is Stanley Tweedle, Guard 4th class:

DanAEAcW4AIycjS.jpg

Stanley was once part of a group of rebels, but ran afoul of a group of Nigerian Princes promising him rescue. They ended up extracting secret rebel plans from him, plans that His Divine Shadow used to almost annihilate the Heretic movement. He since spends his time doing as little as possible as the lowest ranked Guard in the Cluster administration. Life turns from bad to worse for him after annoying a superior officer and is condemned to organ donation. The clerk tells him that he'll probably lose an eye, a kidney and an arm.

When he doesn't show up, that sentence turns to complete dismemberment. Running for his life he accidentially manages to get the key to the Lexx, the most POWERFUL DESTRUCTIVE FORCE IN THE TWO UNIVERSES. He's also a real Shinji, and he's got the supreme hots for Zev. Too bad for him that Zev doesn't want him, although he's literally for most of the time the only fully functional male within lightyears and she suffers extremely under her increased sex drive.

And the entire reason for this long assed post about an old TV show with terrible production values and bad acting, the quintessential b-movie version of a sci-fi show that I can very much recommend to anyone who enjoys a heavy dose of self-irony, bad production values, hot fanservice, ridiculous dialogue and incredible world design. Plus, slight spoiler, His Divine Shadow is played by none other than Malcom McDowell in the final episode of the miniseries (sometimes called the first season).

That means @KP the meanie zucchini I guess, unless he already watched it.

This is the LEXX:

92407-lexx.jpg

The Lexx kills both a God in the miniseries and is powerful enough to obliterate planets. And she really looks an awful lot like the "Wunder", which is German for wonder, in case you don't know that from all the Nazi Wunderwaffen anyway. The Lexx is bioengineered and alive, by the way, so every now and then she just stops to eat... something. In the Cluster, she's fed with the remains of the dismembered, and there are a lot of executions by dismemberment going on.

Wait, did you want to talk about Evangelion 3.33? Right, sorry. What a mess. I need to let that one sink in some more before I even attempt to seriously make a post out of it. What the hell, Mr. Anno? At first this began as  annotated for the hard of thinking version of NGE, now it's gone completely off the rails, with a 14 year time skip, characters who have learned NOTHING in those 14 years, incuding how to talk to Shinji so he doesn't run off immediately and does the one thing he should not because god damned Misato how f*cking dumb can you be, talking to Shinji like that? Same goes for you Asuka, although you really never had your head screwed on straight, so someone should probably make sure she doesn't interact with Shinji for a while.

Guys, really. Oh, and being an EVA pilot makes you immortal, gg, that's why Mari is still around from pre-impact times. Sure, why not. Why... not. Or is everyone actually immortal, because nobody from NERV really looks like they've aged. Not even decrepit close to death old Gendoh right hand guy whose name I should probably recall but for some reason can't, right now. Yui's former professor.

Well, here's to the positive thing. Two and a half more hours, and I'll never have to see that again. Time to rewatch Lexx.

That show was running in TV late at night back in the days when I chose my very first internet nick. Using it ever since.

Currently finishing X.

That doesn't pull any punches. The setup is all paying off now. I thought the ending would be a mess, but so far it isn't. There's one episode left.

Spoiler

Something got in my eye when Karen died protecting Seiichiro. Satsuki's apparently not just semi-conscious computer got jealous enough of one of the Dragons of the Earth not not only stop actively participating in the battle, thereby ensuring that the guy she went out with dies but also kind of forcably connect to her and keep her connected. She's dead, or worse than dead, and that really, really was a very uncomfortable scene, cables going under her skin with her saying: "You're hurting me, please stop that..."

I mean they're the antagonists, but Satsuki had her own story, and actual reasons for joining, unlike some of the others who are just in it for the giggles (or because they're implied to be Kanoe's plaything). Had some really bad SuperS flashbacks there. Ugh.

Sorata also died protecting Ashari, just like he said he would, and he burned off half of Fuma's face in the process.

I'm not even in the mood to complain about Emo McEdgelordface right now, because these past few episodes were really a gut punch, regardless of all the problems with the main character or the ridiculous scope of the story, and the somewhat hilarious twists that happen.

Spoiler

Like Hinoto having a hidden evil personality secretly helping the Dragons of the Earth.

Okay, so the final episode of X begins with...

Spoiler

Fuma turning the last remaining Dragon of the Earth, Kanoe aside (she's not an actual dragon, just the younger sister of Hinoto and was their leader until Fuma showed up) into a whirlwind of viscera, flesh and blood and starts grafting it onto his body, repairing the damage Sorata caused.

Yeah. Okay. Off to a good start then.

No really, Nanami is the best. I mean, she is the absolute worst, but you should've seen my face light up every time she strutted into a scene in her perfectly Nanami way. Here's a character who knows how to ham it up and have some actual fun, unlike everyone else...

Anyways....I actually preferred the CONGRATULATIONS ending to EoE. Lmao. I have no idea why, maybe I'm just a contrarian.

I need to rewatch NGE (which I'll have the opportunity to do sometime within the next few months most likely), because I recall my initial impression of the ending of NGE and TEoE being actually pretty close to each other, but for completely different reasons. Since then, my opinion of TEoE has only progressively gotten higher, while I can barely remember NGE's ending because of...well, you know. So it'll be interesting to see how/if my opinion changes.

I'm watching the sub, so it may be a VA difference but so far she's annoyed the **** out of me. So far she's done diabolical laughter when trying to make Anthy look weird (her just carrying around a snail, snake, and an octopus is objectively weirder tho) and screamed ohnee-chan while thirsty for her brother. Hopefully she gets better, but right now I just want her to **** off.

It's been a couple of years since I last watched either, but I think that the NGE ending gets better after seeing EoE. It gives an insider view to what the HIE looks like compared to the outsider view in EoE, and I think Shinji getting congratulated for accepting himself works better than choking Asuka on the beach while the rest of humanity is in the goo.

Of course the best ending is the secret SHAVE IMPACT ending, where Gendo shaves his chin strap and realizes life is good flying through the sky with a razor in your hand.

#notanyonesanime, actually. This doesn't work on so many levels, for so many reasons, but it was just awesome for me. It's one of these imperfect shows where you have occassional brilliance, sometimes great direction, sometimes terrible direction, pacing issues, exposition overload, then not enough exposition, flashbacks at the worst of times, uncomfortable scenes, great scenes, all mixed together in 24 episodes that were either way too many, or not nearly enough, depending on who you ask.

There's decent writing, occasionally great writing, and sometimes terrible writing, especially when it comes to the plot, with characters literally narrating what's going on, or what we have just seen, or recounting what was going on in a past episode. I think these might be manga holdovers, because Sailor Moon Crystal suffered from exactly the same problem - expositional dialogue that's there even though we can see what is happening on the screen. In Sailor Moon Crystal, you have a scene of a stormy sea, with Sailor Neptune saying "The sea is restless today" over it. Yes, that works in a manga panel when you only have one frame to draw the sea, and then some dialogue or monologue explaining it. That's fine, especially when you need to meet super tight deadlines and barely sleep at all.

It's not fine to take this into adaptation. And I think - without having read the manga - that the story elements of this suffer from the same thing. Too much repetition, not only in scenes, but in things we're told. The dreamseers are especially bad, because they keep narrating their dreams, and when they happen, the real life verions of their dreams just as well. Mr. Director Man, this doesn't work in an anime, maybe talk to your writers.

Generally, people who watched this for the action say that they would have preferred 13 episodes and less episodes focus on character stuff, while people who usually watch for character stuff would have liked more, and less action, and more importantly, much less of the plot.

This really, absolutely and unmistakingly has no target audience, and it saves the absolute best for last: The ending is so mind blowingly awesome that I had to check if it pissed off all the people who usually watch shōnen anime and who were sort of tricked with all the action in this. I was not disappointed at all.

Quote

The biggest disappointment is the ending, they basicly just cram it into episode 24 and the fight is only about 35 seconds long.I don't mean to hate on this series but it's true.

Quote

Story ( 5/10) : Plot is not bad, in fact is simply yet appealing, we have the good guys, the bad guys, the “destiny” , the vision and the magic, but then we have the “big finale” which was a mess.

I think the guy meant to write "simply not appealing", but that doesn't track with the rest of the post.

Quote

like I said, the series have everything to be great but it did not, finale was a complete mess that lead you with more questions than answers, really want to drop the anime several times,

Quote

The first time I read the summary of this anime, I felt a bit curious but then it turns out that it's quite boring. I just expecting that it has lots of actions. I don't like the characters, the way the story goes though I like the music. Most of all I'm really disappointed w / the ending. I could say after watching it "Is that all??!!!" Anyway it's up to you if you like it or not but then I wouldn't waste my time again watching anime like this.

I bet this guy liked Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon A Time.

Then there's some gay panic:

Quote

Aside from the beautiful story, art and great soundtracks that this anime contained I approached X with having no idea what it (really) was about
If you're not into anime guys (homosexuals) trying to kiss each other in battle, or in bed, or in the street, don't watch this
It seriously pissed me off, and the fact that it is integrated into the action (so sad)
This anime had a great potential of becoming very very good, but after I saw what I saw I can never give it more than abysmal

No homo, guys. What he's talking about is an implied shared feeling between Fuma and Kamui, even though Kamui is clearly into Kotori. He's not wrong, there's definitely the occasional homosexual vibe going on, but really... pull your head out of your arse here.

This guy, on the other hand, pretty much nails it:

Quote

But there’s almost a sense that few of them matter compared to Kamui, which gets into one of the biggest problems of X: Kamui himself. Kamui, and his ‘counterpart’ by extension, often display tremendous feats of power, such as both scrapes against the facetious Seishirou, that makes me wonder just why exactly they need six other Dragons on their team. On the other hand, Kamui’s gradual loss of attitude for amiability, the extent of his motives, and his ultimate choice are handled spectacularly. He is a believably flawed character, bringing intrigue to one who can so easily be boring.

Unfortunately, boring is a good way to describe quite a number of X’s episodes. In fairness, over half its episodes solidly realize its cast. Not all of them are developed before a certain point, and some sagas wouldn’t fit anywhere else (the easygoing Yuuto comes to mind). But when the show is mostly building its setting or story, it drags. Not slow, but drags. For every new revelation or plot point the show introduces, the episode around it is essentially coming up with different ways of saying ‘the end of the world is approaching,’ and ‘you must choose.’ It’s repetitive padding in the worst way possible.

Despite some of the negativity I’ve lashed out with, though, I do think that when X is good, it’s fantastic. It’s lackluster narrative is bolstered to emotional crescendos by not only a well-orchestrated soundtrack, but highly vibrant visuals. Studio Madhouse demonstrates artistic work that makes colors that shouldn’t pop out, pop out to great effect. The use of cutaways and jump cuts during many fight scenes can prove distracting, but a number of battles also show the full brunt of every impact to brutal effect. X’s aesthetics have kept their splendor as they’ve aged gracefully.

Except that I didn't really find the soundtrack to be that great. It's generic orchestra awesome, generic orchestra sad, and generic orchestra emotional. Then again, people thought the Sailor Moon Crystal soundtrack was awesome, and that was indeed, just generic orchestra awesome, generic orchestra sad, and generic orchestra emotional. It's functional, but not standing out. The intro song is stupid post-2000 anime punk/guitar heavy stuff.

The sad part is, if you streamlined the plot heavy episodes, took out the repetitive narration and exposition, and cleaned it up a little, this would be legitimately good. As it stands now, it's a mess that only people like me could possibly enjoy, I think, or someone who caught it while it was on TV and just went with watching because nothing else was on.

Oh, right, the ending:

Spoiler

Kamui realizes that it was his decision to become a Dragon of the Heavens that caused Fuma to turn into a Dragon of the Earth, so he simply lets Fuma run him through with his sword, reverts his choice, and prevents the apocalypse by re-establishing the shield around Tokyo Tower that just went out. He does all that by appealing to Fuma's heart, and saying that just as Kotori lived on in his heart, he and Kotori will live on in Fuma's heart. There are some light sparkles, the shield appears, and we're done.

The show spends 23 episodes, more or less, teasing this final, giant battle that decides the fate of the Earth, and then Emo McEdgelordface simply pulls off a classical "I win by refusing to fight" and an appeal to emotion, and it just ends.

Honestly watching X might have been worth it just for that alone, imagining all the anime fandumb being totally put out by the lack of AKSHUUUN! and cool apocalypse stuff. But that's pretty much meta fun.

Music in shows like these always make me feel so old in soul. There's no reason that I should love the music of shows like Sailor Moon or Neon Genesis Evangelion and then hear their modern incarnations and think that it's the most boring, fraudulent garbage that has the complete opposite effect of what's intended. Even older stuff like Dragon Ball or Ranma, stuff that was made literally many years before I was even born, their music just...it works for me. Why? I don't know. Just another reason to add on the pile that most modern shows won't appeal to me while older stuff will, I suppose...

So the show isn't quite right and doesn't seem to have any intended demographic and keeps shooting itself in the foot, but you liked it anyways, huh? It's janked, but it's your kind of jank! That ending does sound kind of hilarious, especially if people were totally split on their reasons for watching it - I'd much rather make the MORE ACTION people angry than the actual shoujo fans, so I guess it worked out,.

...One character I wish I had heard more in Japanese was Anthy, who has such a flat and overall strange delivery of her lines in the English that she was immediately...not unlikable per se, but definitely uncomfortable.

So far in the sub she has no personality and is just boring. Like vanilla ice cream topped with vanilla sauce and whipped cream. Or Aerie.

That's your opinion man, but it's wrong. Nanami is horrible. In just 4 episodes she's managed to be completely unlikeable and nerve grating. The last time a character grated me this way was probably

I thought for sure I was going to get Mari-ed again - I'll take Lord Dio any day of the week over her!

If nothing else, her and this show did scar me for life from hearing the words "big brother" one too many times...

Utena 7-11

Lots of duels, some curry, and Elephants. So Juri doesn't believe in magic, there is a body swapping curry explosion, Nanami killed a cat, Saionji gets expelled, and Touga DIO defeats Utena. It's a weird show, that's for sure.

I really am starting to dislike how eyes are drawn as a solid color with some white orbs in them.

Technically that's Dire, not Dio Brando.

Dire uses THUNDER CROSS SPLIT ATTACK on Dio, who freezes him whole and shatters his body. Because he's Dio. This is in Phantom Blood before STANDO POWAH was a thing, when it was vampires that had to be defeated with breathing power.

I like how the attacks are so absurd and out of left field you have to have other characters pull you aside for a moment and explain them.

Named attacks in JoJo are absolutely hilarious in a way I have not seen topped. Stands kind of start to push them out, but Stands are even crazier.

She didn't just kill a cat, she drowned an adorable kitten because she got the hots for her brother and it was taking attention away from her.

Like I said, she's the worst.

Spoiler for the movie (massive, I mean it this time, stay away @KP the meanie zucchini!):

Spoiler

She so deserved being reincarnated as a cow.

Does not compute: you can't be the worst if you're the only likeable character. There's no rational OR irrational explanation as to why she's the only likeable character, but that's the way it is,.

Steins;Gate 7-13:

After a dozen episodes this gets really wild.

Spoiler

And sad.

Not sure how eating vegetables while pregnant would change the baby's biological sex. But if they can send messages through time with a microwave, then who knows, right?

Also, I think I missed one of the time jumps, because how the f*** is Ruka still going to the lab after what happened???

No, of course it doesn't. It's not weird in the JoJo way, but nothing can be, after all. :)

Are you in the Black Rose arc yet?
