Well it checks out...

Skarpen you know I am sympathetic to certain views you and Dark raise as I have changed some of my views around left and right and what this means based on current global events. I try to understand the reasoning behind a more conservative view that before Trump won in 2016 I would have ignored or dismissed as extremism or bigotry....but its better to understand the concern than to ignore it

What is your concern with what Biden did, I am not really understanding the problem? For example are people saying that he acted unconstitutionally when  he ordered the attack on Syria targets ....what are the other criticisms towards what he did ?

Anyone see the CPAC stage design?

The odal rune, the official emblem of the American Nationalist Socialist Movement...and a symbol used by Nazi Germany's SS (indeed, it is banned outright in Germany). Gee, it's almost like they're trying to tell us something.

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

@Gromnir I don't recall getting into a twist over Biden and his plagiarism or Melania and hers. I'm sure I've mentioned it and almost certainly mocked and ridiculed it. Not like I thought he had a shred of integrity before that came out 30 years ago, but it's not something I give much of a s--t about. Maybe I did but I don't remember. As you already know in my book they are all scum in the same pond. Republicans, Democrats, all trash.

the point is you did not get in a twist over melania, and specific observed that her plagiarism in the context o' a political speech were a non-issue. nevertheless, four years later you brought up biden speech plagiarism as proof he were pond scum... after making a joke about biden being pond scum, which you then had to defend and would likely do so again 'cause you have difficulty restraining self.  biden being pond scum were a joke, right up until we questioned a few o' your comments.

sound familiar? can dig up the disparate melania and biden posts if you really wanna relive.

HA! Good fun!

HA! Good Fun!

Gromnir I wanted to share an observation with you about something I have noticed about how you debate and where you are  convincing and where you not necessarily so

Firstly would you believe I have  a similar approach to any debate that you practice.  I believe you should  argue the facts, provide links but I try to ask " what point will I be achieving with this argument " . Anyway no one can be truly critical of you by saying things like " you dont present facts or data" you do exactly that and its based on real life experience and I have learnt several things from you that I never understood and I always appreciate gaining  new insights. And sometimes this can help me change a view I had that was trenchant and well established but I can  update it and include what  you or others mentioned

And these things may seem irrelevant if I explained them but they not to my life views around problems or solutions we face in SA so gaining insights about things like how a person can be born into a reality where their is systemic poverty or  lack of resources doesnt mean that will define their life, in other words it is possible to address certain hardships and achieve real success and economic prosperity despite what reality we are born into

We always hear people saying "  a person is not defined by their environment and you can always change things if you work hard and make the right decisions " and of course this can be true but its much harder to do if you are actually that person who has to do that. And your journey  is not unique to you, other members have not been given family help but they have worked hard and I consider them successful. Like GD and his decisions and investments.

But your journey matters to me and is one of the reasons I respect your opinions on issues that have defined your life  that most of us will ignore because of the moral argument, for example when you mentioned you have defended right wingers who normally espouse deeply flawed ideological views . These groups  dont target Native Americans specifically but their general distain for Jews and African Americans represents a broader dysfunction and I am someone who cant or wont support certain levels of ignorance and I just leave people to their own devices

I personally find as a white person the doctrines of these groups  offensive and based on pseudo-science which makes it even more inaccurate. So in the same way I dont care about the defense of Islamic extremists and  I would understand many lawyers from a minority group not wanting to defend an out spoken right winger. But you have been able to not let understandable biases or a real repugnance  influence your greater belief in one of the foundations of most of our legal systems which states " everyone has the right to a proper defense " or something similar and that does matter and is an intrinsic part of  what makes our laws ultimately effective and sustainable

My counter argument to this is certain crimes should negate any normal rights suspects receive and I mean certain crimes so its doesn't  get abused. And these specific crimes would include any mass shooting suspect or anyone who is part of bombing attack or other form of terrorism. People that decide on these actions should at the very least ensure they get killed in the end which is what you would expect from anyone prepared to kill innocents because of a ideological stance

But sometimes nowadays people commit mass killings for Internet attention and infamy and after killing possibly dozens of unarmed innocent people they surrender and now want to be treated like a normal citizen ....its just irks me. People like Breivik, Dylan Roof and the NZ coward Philip Manshaus should be placed immediately in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives. You dont execute them but take everything away from them that matters ....that seems fair

Now what I am asking is  you dont seem to  notice humor or levity in a persons post and adjust your views if the person is being serious because I am sure you will agree their is a difference between someone being serious and just having some fun?

For example I have been following some of your and GD debates lately and they do get to a point where you can generally prove something true based on historical  examples and how GD  cant say for example " the USA isnt free " ....and I assume the debate is over but then GD will make a point and  its not serious but he mentions you mustn't take it seriously like today with the ME image

Now I dont think he meant anything personal but it was directed  towards you but in a cheeky but friendly  way  because lately you have been very responsive to most of his posts and he wanted to avoid a misunderstanding or maybe protracted criticism around the particular point ....but sometimes things are just frivolous and dont need analysis

Maybe someone is wondering why do I care about you and GD debates? Their is a reason, always a reason. I have been active on this forum for 11 years and I still believe in the importance of a debate where we can learn from each other. Not many members engage in political debates but both you and GD do  so I would hate  to see an outcome where you two stop debating each other because of a misunderstanding ?

California teachers union president caught dropping his kid off at private school

You have to love the hypocrisy. This is the guy that’s fighting to keep the schools closed. And why not? Doesn’t affect him does it? As scandal goes this is definitely small time. And it has nothing to do with the logistical problems public schools face during a pandemic. But it does look bad and I think hypocrisy should be exposed and ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed.

Yeah, I've always been weirded out by people who work in public but send their kids to private. You have such little faith in your chosen career that you pay to send your children outside of the system?

But in regards to public schools not opening when private have been open for awhile, there really is a world of difference. Private already have much smaller class sizes. They also already treat their teachers like crap, so no biggie if they get covid.

Rename the James web space telescope to the Harriet Tubman space telescope

I thought this was satire at first but they’re being serious. I have a better idea. Let’s not honor people from the past at all. No more statues, no more monuments, no more naming things after people. The James Webb space telescope will be the fourth telescope of its type if I’m not mistaken. So we should just name at the Delta telescope. Oh wait I forgot the Greeks were white. And they kept slaves. Now I guess that won’t do. Can anyone think of an ancient people who didn’t do terrible **** to some other people? Me neither.

Yeah the American left is very BLEH to me.  I mean they're probably the lesser evil considering the current alternative but they are way too focused on identity politics and other empty platitudes rather than focusing on mechanics.

What if everyone becomes vegan in the future? Will they cancel every single person from the past? Will they rename everything?

And what happens if they find out Amerigo Vespucci was involved in something politically incorrect? Will we change the name of the continent? No more US of America?

Edit: too late...

I'm pretty sure that everybody has biases of one sort or another, so eventually we'll all be cancelled and the world will be left to a genderless, bias-free AI overlord called "it who shall not be named".

Might as well, not like they're actually going to finish that telescope.  Naming it after Webb seems odd, should just pick someone that did work at NASA.  Maybe name it after Gene Kranz.

Not really applicable though. Many of the people affected by what's discussed in the SciAm piece are likely still alive today and remember what happened. And to a degree it seems to be happening still even if it's no longer official policy. It's not really "canceling" either -- banning speakers from events and SM is one thing, but I don't think there's anything in the Constitution that protects an individual's right to have a space telescope named after them.

Seriously, I don't think it's such a big deal. Is there a dearth of brilliant people with untarnished legacies to pick from?

The ancient people remark was because we couldn’t use the word Delta. Being Greek in all an ancient white oppressor civilization. As far as people with untarnished legacies every time a name gets picked some skeleton comes waltzing out of the closet. But you’re right this is not a big deal it’s just stupid. But at some point haven’t we all just had enough of stupid?

Webb did work at NASA. He was the NASA admin. Heck you could argue that he saved Apollo. After the Apollo one disaster the knives were out for the entire program.

I was going to suggest that we simply use numbers, then I looked it up and it turns out that the ancient Egyptians invented numbers, and they also enslaved the ancient Jews, who are still around today, so I guess that idea is out the window. Dang, this is going to be tricky.
