Anime - A Rollercoaster of Emotion

I watched the one episode where Sailor Moon and Sailor Uranus get handcuffed together while half-asleep. I hope there's more to Kalionite (or whatever her name is) because right now she seems like another instance of the Esmeraude (or whatever her was) with a less annoying laugh

Spoiler

If anything, Kaolinite is worse, because she...has like...no personality? At least Esmeraude was petty, vain, and jealous - that's some kind of characterization. Kaolinite is just...steadfastly dedicated, but not clever or interesting, and doesn't seem to have particular strengths, weaknesses, or interests. ...The next ones are a lot better, :p.

Episode 30 of S:

Spoiler

"I wondered if my kind and beautiful mommy could help me?" Ooh, she's good. If it wasn't for the fact that she's constantly with Hotaru, Chibi-Usa would've been a consistently great presence since she arrived in S.

"Take it easy - I haven't even given birth to you yet!" Uh, yeah, this reminds me that this is a really screwed-up plot, :p.

"In the name of the Moon, I will save her!"

Are you done with that episode yet? Because I can't believe you haven't commented on the travesty that is episode's Daimon is (or what comes afterwards...).

Spoiler

The hell did that come from, the Japanese softcore porn archive? :p

Also, enjoy the show while it lasts. Serious mode is about to launch soon. Tick... tock...

Yep. She was...different, but there have already been a few about as offensive as her previously, so I guess it barely registered for me.

Episode 31 of S:

Spoiler

"It's your fault; I hate you."

"I understand." *big ol' hug*

Yeah, okay, so Setsuna is/was the other mom Chibi-Usa needed in addition to Usagi - makes sense why Chibi-Usa thinks so much of her.

Uh-oh, Mimete's in trouble... Oh wow, she's a devious one. Too bad she's probably going to get herself killed in this episode - they already introduced the next one, it's bound to happen. Perhaps...she'll be redeemed, but at this point, I think not.

lmao this guard poking Minako. Oh dang, he bit it too...well, then. Some good action in this episode, actually -  Rei with the leaping Burning Mandala, then Makoto with the gut-punch Sparkling Wide Pressure...and then Chibi-Usa with the Tuxedo Mask-flying kill shot.

Uh, did Mimete just Willy Wonka TV-ize herself? Welp, gosh dang it, #RIP Mimete, you and Eudial were the real ones. Now we have what seems to be another lame-brain at the helm. You know, if you hadn't been such a piece of crap, you and Eudial could've worked together and still be kicking. Oh well!

Episode 32 of S:

Spoiler

"Where are those pure hearts you promised me?

"We've...had a few setbacks."

Pal, buddy, friend...you've suffered literally ALL of the setbacks, you have not gotten even one pure heart this entire season. Perhaps you should consider...like, sending a million of them out at once or something. That'd be what I'd do. (e but not actually an e since I'm still writing this post): Well, apparently that's exactly what this new lady thought to do too, lmao.

And...zombie Kaolinite and The Professor just got their own love music cue. Oh, this show, :p. Oh wow, she's back on the job! ...But the other lady just arrived and became active too, so how's that going to work? Aw, she's back to being evil - didn't seem like she much wanted to, either...although she was pretty evil towards Hotaru already, so I'm not sure I really understand the difference.

Oh, apparently that's how it's going to work. Brutal. She had the best idea yet, but she got right proper murdered in record speed for it.

Okay, that's enough Sailor Moon for one morning. Getting close to the end of the show here...yes, the end of the show. That's right, S is the end of the show. I've heard some blasphemous rumors about the existence of some kind of "SuperS", but we don't humor such nonsense here.

Oi, you mean like there never were any Star Wars prequels (or sequels to the first trilogy, or first two movies, depending on whom you ask) or only one Matrix film. Yeah, maybe. I'd still like to read your take on the season that does not exist. ;)

Spoiler

Mostly because I want confirmation. It can't be just me that sees Pegasus as incredibly creepy pedophile horse or Usagi regressing into fighting with Chibi-Usa over Mamoru (and liberally embarassing him) as absolutely not funny any more after Sailor Moon S, or, finally, feels incredibly uncomfortable watching the dream mirror scenes in the first part of the season.

Don't get me wrong, it is as close to a universal truth of the internet that you can come that in almost every poll SuperS is ranked below every other Sailor Moon season, but that usually has pacing issues cited as the main problem. Not everyone behaving like alien shapeshifters replaced them or the creepy things the antagonists do combined with this childlike dream-state vibe the season gives off.

Minor spoilerish fun fact for Sailor Stars relating to SuperS, because the writers appaently agreed with your sentiment there:

Spoiler

Like in R, Sailor Stars has an initial filler arc that is not in the manga at all to give the manga a headstart. What does that do you may ask? The writers spent the first six episodes of Sailor Stars erasing SuperS from the Sailor Moon anime universe. It involves a mini redemption "arc" for the main antagonist of SuperS (that there was hinted at the very end for about a second or two) that changes the past in way so that nothing of what happens in SuperS will ever happen. :p

Or will ever have happened? Time travel tenses can be so confusing.

This is actually more accurate than you might think. It might be a good idea to think of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars as a high-school spin off of the original Sailor Moon that ran for four three seasons. I love Sailor Stars, but it is different...

I need to correct that statement a little. I don't mean it is noticably different insofar as it does anything with the formula. That is still very much in effect and it is by far the most derivative of all the seasons. Nothing original happens, but the character interaction is a good deal different. Or at least it feels different (maybe different enough). It is noticable that they're now in high school, if that makes any sense. :)

Sailor Moon Crystal:

Spoiler

Minako walks though Toyko in broad daylight carrying the Legendary Sacred Sword, and Usagi has no real problems talking to Luna wherever she wants either. Plus Luna got really catty once because Usagi daydreamed of her missing Prince Endymion instead of paying attention to her, and I don't mean she got annoyed because she didn't listen to her advice or anything. She really got... catty. "Meow, I'm no longer wanted!" and Usagi, like every well trained cat servant immediately pets her.

The cat thing I can get behind. Heh. :p

edit:

Hey Ami, I'm not sure why you want to demonstrate how powerful the Legendary Sacred Sword is by having Minako smash a diamond with it. Ami even says "Oh I expected that" when Usagi rightfully freaks out at Minako killing Ami's five figure diamond ring.

Diamonds are hard, but they're also really... brittle. Of course it breaks when you apply enough physical force to it. Granted, Minako just touched the diamond lightly with the tip of the sword, but the point still stands. If you want to you can smash a diamond with a hammer. Or a sword. Actually... how else would you even split raw diamdons apart to be transported and cut later? If diamonds were impervious, how would you cut them into gemstones?

Shouldn't Ami know that?

Gee writers. I wonder if that is in the manga too, I kind of doubt it, because for all her flaws as writer Naoko Takeuchi studied chemistry. Psh.

Rei's psychic powers in Sailor Moon Crystal is as useless as Deanna Troi's empathy in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It could be an interesting trait for her to have, but all she does is say "I have a bad feeling." whenever something is obviously wrong or "what immense evil energy!" when the girls are being blasted by Evil <insert color> Energy Blasts of Doom(tm).

i-sense-anger-captain-so-angry.jpg

Spoiler

Evil!Endymion just held back Usagi and gave her back her bag in the same way Mamoru did when he wanted to sniff her hair, except his hand was on a different shoulder. One is supposedly super creepy because Evil!Endymion is a creepy weirdo, but Mamoru doing that was fine and romantic.

Exact same scene. Different shoulder. BOTH are creepy.

How do you not notice that during production?

Usagi runs out of the Crown Arcade being noticably upset and super creeped out about something. Makoto and Ami are seeing her and go like: "Poor Usagi, I hope everything is all right." Yeah sure, does she look all right to you? They're screwed without Rei there to tell her that she's got a really baaaaaaaaaad feeling about this. No need to spoiler this seeing how IC already met Sailor Jupiter. :)

Spoiler

Well, the all go into their command bunker after Makoto calls them there. Something's really, REALLY NOTICABLY WRONG with Makoto (Evil!Endymion brainwashed her), but Rei doesn't notice this time and Makoto gets Usagi to reveal the Silver Crstal...

How can anyone prefer this to the original anime?

Everything I've seen of and heard about Crystal tells me to stay the hell away. I'll get to finish Great Pretender and finally start Attack on Titan instead, and hopefully Stone Ocean gets confirmed so I can watch a lesbian prison riot against a gay priest who is trying to fulfill his dead boyfriend's dream of going to Heaven.

The more I hear about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure the more bizarre it becomes. :p

Also, I'll just quote the Sailor Moon Wiki here for something that just happened in Crystal:

Spoiler
Quote

Sailor Mercury used this power during the battle with Queen Beryl in Act 12 of the manga to protect the Game Center Crown (as well as Motoki) from destruction. It creates a shield that dimensionally seals off a place from its surroundings. Mercury used it to create a shield around the secret Senshi control room at Game Center Crown so that the damage from the battle wouldn't destroy the rest of the arcade. She was able to do so by using "time axis calculations" given to her by Luna, which suggests that the power not only puts the affected area into a sort of subspace but into a sort of chronoblock as well. She must have her Mercury Goggle on to do the attack.

You go girl, you go. I think I'll skip the manga for the time being, because that is really... directly taken from it. Holy crap.

Okay, so  I'm going to leave this here and try to get some sleep.

Spoiler

This is what happens in Crystal when Sailor Moon fights against Endymion. In the original anime she breaks his brainwashing after finding enough courge and resolve to actually attack him, and he dies after being attacked by Queen Beryl (but kills her at the same time), saving Sailor Moon and paving the way for her to defeat Queen Metalia.

This is what happens in Crystal.

But, you know, the original anime is the one without character development that was bad becaus it changed the manga. Because nothing screams character growth and empowerment more than killing yourself and the man you love in the face of defeat.

Holy hell, in the original anime this is the point where Usagi finally lets go of the idea that she doesn't deserve the love or the sacrifices of her friends (and Mamoru), resolves to not even kiss him goodbye (corny as that way) and walks off to sacrifice herself to save the world. This, along with the second to last episode of Sailor Moon S, is a pivotal moment in her life. There's acceptance of her role as Sailor Moon in this scene in the first season... and in S. I'll come to that once @Bartimaeusis done watching, because that scene in S (and my interpretation of it) ultimately lays the groundwork for most of my dislike of Usagi regressing into what feels like early season one Usagi in SuperS.

Yet here, all she does is play star-crossed lover, AGAIN, after resolving to NEVER AGAIN BE THE TRAGIC PRINCESS two episodes earlier when her mother's force ghost hologram told her she killed herself over Prince Endymion before.

The girls have a scene in this episode that I heartily ROFEL'D at, but not because it was funny. They're trying to fight the four commanders, who in a change from the manga, are still alive at that point - mostly because Crystal wanted to incorporate the idea of Takeuchi that they were in love with the Sailor Senshi in the past. They tell each other that they really need to go and help Usagi because they're the best friends in the world and  they love each other.

90ies anime girls, I would have believed you. Crystal girls... I'm sorry. It feels like you guys have known each other for the ~200 minutes of runtime this had up until now. At this point you're acquaintances at best. Using a familiar honorific to imply closeness isn't enough, sorry gals. I want to see to believe.

Oh and yes, also, straight up from the manga, I just checked that chapter to make sure.

Also, so...what I heard about the show spending like 100% of its time on Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask and hardly any on the other Sailor Guardians was sadly true?

Spoiler

that SM transforms in front of Mamoru. They even show him during the transformation, making it clear he is watching

And she was worried about revealing her identity, but not about being naked. :p

I know it is a Clark Kent thing, but seeing Mamoru surprised is hilarious because basically the only difference after the transformation is the color of the bow in her back and the gloves/boots/tiara, that don't change much of her appearance.

And now I can't stop watching because they started a sequence of important revelations.

I stopped watching when I saw the cats. They look horrible!

So in Crystal Viz Media launches a copyright block to avoid the ending? Sounds a little weird tbh.

Yeah, I had to use my VPN to see it - Canada worked fine.

Halfway through.

Man, everyone thinks Haruka is a dude lmao. The people in here really need to learn to talk to each other instead of running away all the time, this is at least the second time it's happened this season but this time with Rei's love interest. Getting beat by a train was funny.

Minako was wishing she could have a normal life and a boyfriend, only to conveniently run into a guy she has a crush on. Of course he gets attacked by a monster, who happens to be a ball. And he figures out Minako is Sailor Venus, not because she looks exactly like her, but because she does a special move. The way these guys can be super perception selectively is just funny.

Professor continues to kill it, every scene with this dude just ends up being funny. I love how they jump through hoops to keep his face hidden, reminds me of something I don't want to spoil.

JoJo Part 3 Spoilers ahead
