****, I will miss him. Loved hearing from him when he popped on the Skeptics Guide to the Universe, and his talks were amazing.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Goodbye Mr. Bond. Daniel Craig was good. But nobody was better than you!

Quote
“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

-Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>>
Quote

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

at the end o' the movie, captain ramius reminisces that there is a river near vilnius which is much like the one where the red october is being hidden... taught to fish by his grandfather on that river. movie ruined. is no river anywhere near vilnius which could accommodate an alpha class sub much less an oversized typhoon.

HA! Good Fun!

I know someone who said a couple of his friends recently qualified to be on Jeopardy ... but now, if they get called to be on the show,  there will be no Trebek...

Such a TV/gameshow icon .... you will be missed. RIP.

Maradona just died. RIP to an absolute legend.

Best handball player ever! 😝

Just kidding, it was impossible to not gawk at the screen when watching him play. So completely in a class of his own. Napoli never got close to winning Serie A again I think.

On another forum, a thread went "Darth Vader passes away!" or  something like that, and half the reactions were "I thought you meant James Earl Jones!"

Anyway ... RIP to the man behind the mask.

Tell me about it. UK Twitter was trending Michael Cain. Only when I checked did I find it was because of the Muppet Christmas Carol, and not because he had died.

It always felt a bit a odd that he would cast Christian Hayden as Anakin. Compared to David Prowse, he's a little "twerp" with his only 183cm. Prowse was tall (198cm) and was cast for that very reason as Darth Vader. Roughly 6ft vs 6ft6 Hayden would stare at Prowse's chest if they were put next to each other.
