How is it a failure? History shows exactly the opposite; a resounding success. Both parties keep a watchful eye on each other, which helps significantly reduce corruption. Voters get a regular opportunity to throw out the worst of the lot, which is much more than the people get in, say, Russia, North Korea, or China.

American Democracy is at its best at the local level. Everyone kind of seems to overlook the fact that voters have way more purchase and influence at the local level, and the reality is that is the stuff that tends to affect your day to day life. Then we have a bit more messiness at the State level, and then it gets crazy at the Federal level. Honestly these federal elections are really just slightly more important than which sports team wins the National title. Sure, I love when my team wins. It makes me happy. It might even be good for the local economy where that team is from. But yeah, it's not that important because a new season is just around the corner, and your star player was probably doping all year long anyways.

I may have lost track of my metaphor...

Corruption is the same just better hidden even legalized, the freedoms are on the surface and for all the "differences" between the two parties the ship still gets steered in the same direction: perpetual war, the rich get richer the poor get poorer and middle class keeps getting worse off. Just a matter of time before the US gets full blown Corporatocratic.

My thoughts as well.  We need just enough government that enforces anti-monopoly practices and makes sure the "people at the bottom" at least have reasonable living standards but that's about it.  If it takes an "illiberal democracy" to achieve it, so be it.  Literally anything is preferable to the mess we have now (except an outright dictatorship).

Biden wants to "equalize" 401(k) tax breaks. That's newspeak. In plain english he wants to eliminate it because tax breakes make democrats angry. Whatever. I don't have one so "equalize" away. More and more I am only concerned about "how does this affect me". The upshot of never havimg had children I guess. Very little about whatever outcome November brings will significantly affect me.

Although I do laugh at the folks who think Biden's probable victory will unite us back together. It won't. Were we united before the 2016 election? Hardly. Besides, much like the Democrats in '09, and the GOP in '17 the first things the new President and (likely) Democrat controlled congress will do will be to deliberately insult, provoke and infuriate their political opponents. They can't help themselves. That will ensure a Congressional change in 2022 and we can safely coast into 20204 with a divided government.

I suppose that's more than can be said about Bashar al-Assad:

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

As far as I know I can't catch obesity from someone.

If that was the case Gromnir hammering on the muslim ban would have gotten Trump support to disappear on this forum. The more likely outcome is them doubling down and wanting to unleash the freedom police to throw people they don't like in liberty jails to fight big government anarchist mega-corp socialism.

were not an attempt to erase trump support. am not so naive. we see the pervasive cognitive disconnect, particular from those who claim to be voting their conscience, and demand an answer. where are the righteous voters who will do anything necessary to halt the radical democrats and the existential threat joe biden represents when we ask 'bout muslim ban? how does an American o' conscience, given our history and the foundational principles 'pon which this nation were founded, vote for a man who promised a muslim ban?

...

were multi posters and multi pages o' gaslighting trying to tell us trump never made such a promise.

even after posting links to trump video where he makes promise as well as a trump campaign release stipulating that candidate trump were promising a muslim ban, the responses we got were gaslighting efforts.

nobody wants to be the person who admits they support and even agree with the overt bigotry o' trump, but am suspecting the terrible reality is that such bigotry is the source o' his popularity.  weren't any economic policy which set trump apart from his fellow 2016 republican candidates. nope, trump were from outside the beltway and more important, he said aloud what too many believed but were ashamed to admit aloud:

too many muslims hate america.

mexicans and other central/south americans are stealing american jobs, particular those jobs which is in short supply after the recession.

there may be bad cops in america, but the real problem is all the black people committing crime.

etc.

every time the President's supporters defend trump bigotry as "trump being trump," or make excuses that such comments may be inartful but they is "real," am suspecting something more ugly and sinister is at play. what genuine worries us is that trump says what too many americans feel and believe and wish they could say aloud w/o fear o' being judged.  those righteous trump supporters o' conscience who is hard core pro life and see themselves as the last line o' defense 'gainst ungodly liberals who want to destroy what it means to be american, is afraid of mexicans and blacks and muslims and know-it-all scientists.

is all bass ackwards. doesn't matter what trump does, 'cause is actual what trump says which has made him the champion o' so many. everybody puzzling over trump popularity with his base misses the key and most disturbing fact: trump followers will not abandon him because he is a bigot.

Yeah the debate was more cordial ....Biden seems  to have won overall from a " which candidate came across as the most presidential "

Trump loves denying any Russian involvement but that is just part of the Trump script around Russia interference in the US electoral process

This was the first presidential debate I watched in a long time. Nothing I saw changed my mind about anything obviously. Biden is an old and tired man. A spent force if ever he was a force. He is contemptible and corrupted. And yes I believe all of the stories regarding Hunter Biden’s business dealings and Joe’s benefit from them have more than a grain of truth in them even if they’re not all entirely true. Trump was right about him last night. He is the caricature of the bad politician and a poster child for term limits.

Trump is... well he is what he is. After three years and nine months there are no surprises left. I’m quite certain he has a positive quality or two but I’m also quite certain I couldn’t name them off the top of my head. The worst part about him is think he even believes his own bull****. Bill Weld nailed him in 2016. A showman. That’s the part he has chosen to play is so reprehensible makes it all the worse. He is egotistical, self-centered, self indulgent, and honestly believes the world is what he thinks it is just because he thinks it is. The truth in his eyes this whatever he says it is. It would not even be fair to call him fundamentally dishonest. Because I think he believes everything he says. Somehow that’s even worse. I’d almost prefer a liar who is grounded in reality.

The next President of the United States will be a shady, corrupted, disingenuous man of low character. His very presence in the office will further tarnish an institution that has long since lost its luster.

And that, my friends, is how I see it.
