unpopular gaming opinions - here's mine, share yours

-CRPGs are too long.

-Most CRPGs are bad.

-Most of the CRPGs claiming they have great replayability hardly differ from one playthrough to the next.

-No 4X game so far has solved the sluggish late game that feels like pounding a big dough over and over.

-The Dishonored series is probably the best PC game series ever produced (IMHO)

-And, well, yeah. NWN2 rocks! Nuff said!

Alpha Protocol was fantastic in it's choices. And they mostly all made sense (the museum bombing is always strange - Thorton choosing to save one person over many. But eh, I took that option on the Veteran playthrough, roleplaying it that he had seen too many friends die and couldn't sacrifice her as well).

I wish I could like Alpha Protocol, but the times I tried starting a game it just came to an abrupt halt after the first few mini-games. I effing hate most mini games of the pick a lock, hack a circuit (or mass effects tetris games). It was too much of a turn off to keep persisting with the game 😢

(QTE's can go to a hot place which is unlikely to freeze over too)

(edit: One of the things ME3 did right was to finally ditch the mini games completely, never mind whatever other issues it might have had)

(edit2: I don't remember which one of the first two ME's had the tetris game, there was also a really, really, really tedious connect the dots on a circuit board mini game in one of them)

Well...ok yeah that is a big factor in why I don't mind them, it's a nice area of watch the world burn so to speak as no one's dying.  I've played games where they really push it but I've not felt like I've missed out on stuff by ignoring it (Division 1 and 2 and GR WIldlands were like this).  People go for them that's why they are made, like the whole Early Access nonsense somehow being accepted.

What now? Those parents have nothing on this bastard witchcraft child of theirs! The Dishonored creations - their music, art, and soundscapes - they simply run circles around them. We're speaking fancy French cuisine here. I no longer live in this world. I've phased into my digital existence as a a seafront apartment owner in Karnaca, reading the morning paper while being frantically scared of over-sized mosquitos.

^ While we're on the topic of Arkane games and unpopular opinions...

The 2017 Prey "reboot" is a brilliant game, one I am not afraid to call a masterpiece. It has a unique vision behind itself, an excellent story, a very strong and consistent thematic core that resonates on every layer of the game, and - more than anything else - a truckload of obvious thought and heart put into it.

It is a crime that it undersold, and an even bigger crime that the majority seems to have written it off as just another buggy RPG-shooter. It's the kind of fresh and artistic property that everyone seemingly wants, but somehow never manages to gain wider (yet well-deserved) recognition.

my unpopular opinion would be that there needs to be more RTS and MMO games, and not just MOBA and battle royale, which pop up one by one. Also all FPS seem the same to me idk how can people still play them.

I guess I have no more unpopular opinions.

Here are mine:

Solo-play RPGs are boring. Party-based games are a much more fun and meaningful experience.

Single-player is the only way to play a videogame. Playing with other people is a painful chore.

The first-person perspective in RPGs limits rather than enhances roleplaying.

Turn-based combat is fake combat, and as such by definition can never be good in an RPG.

Planescape: Torment is an overrated game. Corollary: Chris Avellone is an overrated writer.

Playing Baldur's Gate 1 is a more fun experience than playing Baldur's Gate 2.

All 4X games should come with the option to turn off the 'extermination X' part of the game.

Playing with swords is way more fun than playing with lasers or guns.

True, art-wise Dishonored is great. Partially, because it is not as old, and because art direction is sublime.

On a side note, once I get a new PC Dis2 will be the first one to be played (very much like Dis1 was with my current lap(table)top).

When looking at current gaming overall, yes. DayZ and WC3 DOTA had the biggest impact on gaming. Now are they important to me? Not in the least.

Master of Orion 3 after patches was a decent 4X game. :p

Turn based combat is boring and for complete boons who can't hack it.

Baldur's Gate had good combat. Even before mods.

(Post is actually semi-serious, try to guess.)

Well the most influential game of history is actually Clash of Clans. Because every sharehoarder, their mothers, dogs and hamsters involved in game industry want its profit 😞

And that's why we can't have nice things anymore 😞

Eastern European RPGs would like a word :)

The rest of the West is too busy not trying to step on any toes to be able to even go within a galaxy of "sensitive" subjects. It's a disease (and a sign of an unhealthy society, but I digress)

Not really a gaming opinion, but this is a myth. Games, movies, TV, and literature are plowing through sensitive subjects at a greater rate than ever before. There has been a massive jump in the amount of media we all have access to, but that has also included a massive spike in the ability to criticize.

I'm curious what subjects you think western games are not addressing?

I like idea of East Europe cRPG.  But how EE we talk?

  • Nazi occupation?
  • Early commies (purges)?
  • Post Soviet peoples republic (corruption, economic apocalypse, clash of commies, liberals, and nationalist)?
  • Post Nuclear Soviets?
  • Balkans War (Jugoslavia)?
  • Smuta? (Russian Interegium)
  • Syberia exploration with a bit of magic?

To some degree Disco Elisium was eastern crpg.
