Hi

I propose a non magical class that has no ties to arcane, diety or nature. Just a scientific, hard hat, roll up your sleeves support focused class that utilizes science over magic.

We have non magical defenders and damage dealers in fighter rogues. But no support.

I know some people might say we have xhanters. They have no diety or hippie magic but they do use magic, lighting, skeleton control, mind control magics etc. Im talking about no ****ing magic.

Im talking about a scientist or alchemist or something. They use good ole fashion science to understand the how the world works and this understanding is reflected in their skill set.

Seeing as how stupid and useless the consumables are, why not remove that junk and give it to the science class. Remove all that junk. Give the science class active skills that are the traps, potions, posions and drugs. These skills follow the same per battle use as all other actice skills. A little redesign and number adjustment for these skills is necessary but you get the idea. This is the down and dirty idea.

At the very least, design the skills around the theme of drugs, poisions, bombs and devices that the scientist creates.

If you want to work within the system, you want a mage slayer, possibly a mage slayer + (non trickster, non-debonaire) rogue.

A mage slayer can be thought of as an arcanum-style magic-averse type, where not only do they want to purify the world away from froofy magic, magic literally can't effect them nearly as well because of their convictions. You can definitely interpret barbarian abilities as nothing intrisinscially supernatural, but sheer force of will and war-time morale boosting/shattering (for the yells).

A rogue has extra item slots. You can stay away from the explicit invisibility effects (shadowing beyond, vanishing strike) and stick to the smoke cloud->smoke grenade path since that makes it seem like the rogue just has a utility belt full of smoke grenades and smoke bombs. Just go around throwing explosives and using poisons while you're at it.

Sound like a cool class concept. Arcanum-like tech thing. Animancer perhaps?

The trick would be to make a unique gameplay loop for them without simply doubling magical abilities, with non-magical lore explanation.

Deadfire indeed has plenty of niche items like Granades, potions and such, would could make a basis for a new class, at least on surface Level.

Of course they can be athiest. It goes back to poe1. What the definition of a god?

The engwishans can be considered man made plastic gods. They took simple human beans and gained more and more power until theyre godlike.  They are not natural organic. Is man made god still a god?

They are like robots given more and more human characteristics and enhancements. Some people might say no matter what they are never truly human despite all the saliva, hair, thinking and emotion the robot has.

The argument can be given that yes they are gods despite the above, but its still reasonable to be athiest in the poe world.

This is also a world where there is actually magic. In Deadire you go around telling people that a god has incarnated a gigantic statue and is trampling through the deadfire, and some people roll their eyes at you -- not necessarily that they don't believe you about seeing a gigantic animated statue, but rather that it's inhabited by a literal god.

If there are people wandering around who can literally make fantastical things happen just by mumbling a few words and waving their hands, it seems like it would be even easier to be athiest. A miracle happened? No, wasn't divine intervention, was just Bob the level 1 Thaumaturge over there messing up a cantrip.

  • 2 weeks later...

as 'posed to a whole new class with complete different mechanics, we proposed, many times, the addition o'  a godless priest option.

no violation o' lore and given the big reveal at the end o' poe, a godless "priest" woulda' been particular appropriate. even if were only a couple extra dialogue options made available, we woulda' given such a subclass a playthrough.

yes, priests already had more subclass options than other classes, save for paladins, so mighta' seemed like unfair and unnecessary bloat. also, am suspecting addition o' atheist/godless priests woulda' required more dialogue additions than any other priest subclass, not necessarily 'cause such woulda' been absolute required, but writers woulda' no doubt been itching to add such options. woulda' required time to implement, and is never enough time.

regardless, a godless priest would be thematic appealing while avoiding some o' the mechanical complications o' adding a complete new class.

HA! Good Fun!

In this setting souls are part of reality, so a scientist would recognize that and perform research accordingly. It might be interesting to have a cold-blooded Vithrack scientist available as a support character.

you mean an animancer, yes? is kinda cornerstone o' setting and plot that that animancers is studying souls and have been able to manipulate souls by means o' mechanical and tech process.

woulda' been nice to have an animacer class for poe, but then again, am suspecting obsidian were trying to make distinction o' animancy as a field o' study and animancers as a profession as'posed to mages 'n such. perhaps an adventuring class capable o' doing functional "magic" woulda' messed with the impression o' animancy the writers/developers were trying to convey. dunno.

Belfetto aimico. An animancer class fits just what im lookimg for, no? The only merla problem is that animancer skills might overlap with the merla cipher. Both classes would manipulate soul stuff but in different ways. One scientifically with tons of copper and the other naturally like an xmen. What say?
