The Shinra raid on Corel.

The Nibelheim Incident.

The Sector 7 plate collapse.

Wedge? Dead in the Sector 7 plate collapse.

Biggs? Dead in the Sector 7 plate collapse.

Jessie? Dead in the Sector 7 plate collapse.

Dyne? Presumed dead. Then too crazy so killed by his best friend.

Barret's right arm? Shot to pieces so Dyne would fall to his death.

Aerith? Dead.

Zack? Dead.

Under all the big eyes and cuteness and Mogs and Chocobos, jrpgs are darker than most western rpgs would dare be.

Ff7 is darker than most jrpgs.  I've played more jrpgs where no one dies they just get knocked out.  1 game a genre is not

Same darkness is in FF6. Pretty much every FF up to 7, the Ogre games. Heck, Ogre has tracks alignment and choices to such extend, it is super easy to be forced into conflict with every person you do not want to fight and wind up in a downward spiral to darkness.

One game isn't a genre, it is an example.

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

You want some examples of dark JRPGs? How about pretty much any MegaTen game. MegaTen games get really dark. Not necessarily in a main characters getting killed way, though there's some of that too, but more about exploring some really heavy themes of religion, morality, sacrifice, etc. For a bit of perspective, Persona, which is a MegaTen spinoff, tends to be less dark than the main series, and Persona gets pretty dark at times.

Tales of games have pretty dark themes as well, especially it's take on racism in Rebirth and Symphonia. Something like that would be impossible in western games. Also in Berseria, you are essentially playing (clicking the spoiler can pretty much completely ruin the whole story for you, if you never played it, and plan to play it, I highly recommend to not click on it. I've warned you :) )

After quite a while, I managed to get myself some extra money and it was immediatly spent on games:

image.jpg

Cyberpunk 2077: spent some 7 hours playing it and it's ok. It runs good enough on the Xbox One X and I haven't encountred any game breaking bugs yet but honestly, Deus Ex feels a whole lot more 'cyberpunk' compared to this game.

Mafia Trilogy: oh man, I had my sights on this one for quite a while. Haven't played it yet but it sure is worth it. All the games with the dlcs + complete remake of the first game.

I wanted to buy Nier: Replicant today but the retailer said they were out of stock.

Mamie what dark themes and what take on racism wouldnt be accepted in Western games, it sounds very interesting 8)

Can you give specific examples ?

"Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss”

John Milton

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” -  George Bernard Shaw

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead" - Nelson Mandela

Go and play Tales of Symphonia or Tales of Rebirth. Some people are labeling them, especially Tales of Rebirth, as racist games. Which makes as much sense as labeling any movie about post WWI Germany as racist movie... You find very hard similar themes in any western games...

Bought Nier: Replicant. Yay!

It's going to feel weird to replay the game as a new character. Back in the days we had Nier Gestalt which was the western version of the PS3/Xbox 360 game and had a different protagonist.

It's good that PC gamers get a chance to play this game. If you want a good story and a colorful cast of characters then this is the game for you. Is it flawed? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

So I went ahead and caved and I got that big remaster everyone has been clamoring for. The game that's on everyone's lips. You loved it years ago and now it's back on modern hardware with improved visuals.

Bought two games recently on steam. Nier: Replicant for the depressing stuff and Dungeon of Naheulbeuk (no idea how to pronounce it, it's based on a French comic series) for the more lighthearted stuff

Latest purchases... Rogue Squadron (because I like my hotas stick), Dungeon of Nahelbeuk (sp?) and Nier: Replicant 1.22.... (because I love Nier: Automata).

Regarding Nier... Kaine's swearing is just otherworldly bizarre 😂

But it runs smoothly without hiccups, which is a relief considering what I had heard about the PC port.

I ending up buying DRAGON QUEST XI S Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on Green Man Gaming cause it was on sale, I then grabbed Terminator Resistance, 9th Dawn III: Shadow of Erthil, Alan Wake and Alan Wake's American Nightmare since they were also all on sale on Steam.

I scooped up Assetto Corsa Competizione. I probably won't touch it for a few months, but I plan to get a wheel, shifter, and pedals in the near future and I want a good hardcore racing sim. This series is well regarded, @Mamoulian War seems to be a big fan of the game, though I'm not sure if it's this one or the previous one, it has a gold rating on ProtonDB, so I should be good to go on Linux, plus it was dirt cheap on a Steam sale.

I am bigger fan of the previous version, because I had ****ty PC 😛 I was unable to run ACC. It is very good sim, if you have specs for it, but one with more complicated car set-ups. You will need to watch few hours of youtube tutorials, how to set up the correct fuel economy and brake pads for different race lengths, for different cars :)

I would recommend you for start to pick a single car, and try to get used to it, and learn the set-up stuff you need for it :) and only then start experimenting with different cars :)
