IIRC Walter Koenig, the original Chekov, was also the son of Jewish Russian immigrants though he was born in the here and not in the Soviet Union.

Forgot to mention that I heard the accent was played up on purpose. Don't remember the source for that though.

My understanding is that is the case, and as I understand it Koenig's dad had trouble with "V"'s and "W"'s since IIRC Russian doesn't have a distinct v sound.  This translated for Chekov as always swapping a W for a V which, IIRC, is what Yelchin thought was a weird choice.

Q: How is your accent?

Yelchin: I think it's pretty good. I mean, it's great. No, I mean it's good. The thing is about Walter Koenig was his accent was interesting. I think I'm just going to leave it at interesting. And it was sort of like, all of us had to make the choice of what we wanted to take from the original one and what we sort of wanted to bring to it. And there are certain things that I took from him. Like, the fact that he replaced every "v" with a "w," which is weird. Like, I don't really know where that decision came from. But regardless, that's a decision that he made. And I thought it was important to bring that to the character. So it was sort of like, I talked to [director] J.J. [Abrams] a lot about what he wanted. And his thing was, like, we're not making something that's supposed to be the old Star Trek. He's making his own movie, but there is a bit of, like, I think people want to see what they love. And so we're all sort of trying to find things that will remind people of the old characters. And so that's been interesting sort of picking up little things.

Chekov is, like, the weirdest guy. Like, watching the old show really makes you realize just how strange, but incredible it was. First of all, that they brought a Russian character on right smack in the middle of the Cold War. Like, there's one scene where they're talking to Apollo or something, or the god that used to be Apollo in the old show. And Apollo is like, "I am Apollo." And Chekov is like, "And I am the czar of all Russias." That's not how I'd choose to do the accent, but it's like they gave him these lines. I mean he really is the weirdest, weirdest character.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Today at the bank, an old lady asked me to help check her balance. So I pushed her over.

I bought some shoes from a drug dealer. I don't know what he laced them with, but I've been tripping all day.

I told my girlfriend she drew her eyebrows too high. She seemed surprised.

My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike away.

The other day, my wife asked me to pass her lipstick but I accidentally passed her a glue stick. She still isn't talking to me.

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.

What? You thought it was a quote from some well known wise guy from the past?

I am astonished how NASA is able for years photoshop out all the demons on Mars

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

At the very minimum Rick and Morty gets those of us who are in the hobby.

Quote
“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

Quote

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

Hey a lot of effort wen into those tapes. Waiting for the radio station to play the right song. Hitting the recording start and stop just right so you only get the song you want. It took effort to be a cheapskate in the '80's
