Finished Black Mirror season 4 yesterday. Not sure if I like the change of style by Netflix. Also the second half of that season was really weak, imo. Especially the last two episodes were bad... the last one was the worst. I even started doing something else near the end. This whole "tough gurl IT specialist police officer"-thing was just so ugh... The only thing I liked about this episode were the accents.

Speaking of anime, I noticed they decided to make an updated version of Fruits Basket (an anime I have a physical copy of). Different voice actors, updated animation (the original was in 4:3). I watched the first episode ... I think I like the original better (the animation feels a bit "warmer" to me) but they did a good job on this remake, voices (Japanese ones) are all fine etc.  I don't really see the need for it, but it's still a charming show so why not I guess?

I hoped Black Mirror would stratch an itch that the end of Outer Limits '95 left, but... not enough downer endings. :p

Trying to watch The Silence - which is the new Quiet Place/Bird Box like movie from Netflix. Only reason I clicked it was because, Stanley Tucci. Not really expecting much from film itself.

I'm only 15 minutes in and I had to log in here to say - if you're sensitive to anykind of tinnitus-type whine noise, don't watch this movie. Main chr. teenage girl is deaf and often they do her PoV with a loud tinnitus like sound. MOST ANNOYING thing ever. Movies that do that once or twice I can deal with it but...many times... I'm hoping as the show goes on they'll stop doing it but even at low volume, GARGH my ears.

I really enjoyed the Orville last night but I was expecting some slightly larger repercussions. Though seeing as how the show hasn't been afraid to go back to threads they've left dangling maybe something major will finally happen.

Why is it The Orville had such a long break again? This stuff always pisses me off. In fact, for some reason I actually thought the season ended already because of that... which would have been weird, because the episode 11 didn't felt like a season ending at all... ugh.

The Silence - outside of Stanley, not worth watching. That is all.

I hoped The Orville's episode would end another way.

Is it me or all council's members they showed reacting were agreeing with the Moclans? Ok, the others could vote differently, but I had the impression the Moclans would win.

Also, what happened to Kelly and Talla? Nothing?

Heaps of shows have skipped weeks at the same time due to college basketball finals(?) Used to be due to ratings sweeps as well, but surely they're now anachronisms, surely.

Breathtaking drama in this week's Discovery episode by the way. Breathtaking.

Certainly one of the top 13 episodes of season 2 so far.

I'm a bit baffled about how many subsidiary series they're trying to set up now, having an actual Enterprise crew + set (or was it the movie one?) and a decent level actor with Commander Mystique kind of suggests they want to do more with Enterprise as well as the S31 series.

Good lord, was that episode ever riddled with maudlin melodrama and stultifying speeches. And pretty much nothing actually happened either.

Greetings Gentlemen. Do any of you like Cowboy Bebop? If so, you should consider watching Shinichiro's latest anime: Carole & Tuesday. It's a different genre, but the soundtrack is awesome, and it arguably takes place on the same world as Bebop.

Looks interesting, and some good musical backing. Are you really getting paid?

Haha, well, not for recommending it here. But I've done some JPN->ENG translations for their website and press releases, so I'm technically part of their PR team.

Of course, it hasn't released overseas yet, so technically there's no legal way to watch it unless you're living in Japan at the moment.

They don't really go into detail about it. Brief bits of people/news theorizing ancient small creatures that were trapped underground long ago and evolved bat-like existence, then released accidentally by exploratory humans. The usual. In the series they flock/attack in large swarms and are about the size of large birds of prey so danger is largely from vast numbers. Of which I'm dubious they'd have those numbers (from living in underground caves for ages) to be able to so rapidly cause a near-extinction level event or altered existence for humanity or even just the USA, as a whole. They certainly didn't look like diggers, for example. Must've been some really vast, entire planet-crust encompassing cave system the researchers stumbled onto. :disguise:

I watched this movie a few days ago, I enjoyed it and its definitely entertaining   but yes its got some seriously illogical flaws if Im being critical....like how would they have survived for millions of years in underground caves without food? If you take the large number of them that are able to assault parts of the USA what did they eat all this time  :ermm:

Black Summer, via Netflix

The Good: if you think the best part of zombie shows is the beginnings of an outbreak, with emphasis on random survival and "who do you trust" moments vs. lots of story/chr-drama to get in the way, this could be the show for you. It looks good, acting is overall decent/consistent, lots of zombie action. The zombies are the type that turn to zombie in like 3 seconds after death. Not super-fast, just normal human running speed and seemingly able to learn a tiny bit if given time to figure something out etc.

The Middling: episodes do not have a consistent length. Sometimes this works well, sometimes it just feels odd. The focus on each episode (or segments within an episode) is a single chr (or later, a small group) and other segments may show other chrs perspective and then collision with previous segments. I put that as middling because not everyone likes that sort of thing. Again, some episodes it worked well as a device, other times it felt a bit contrived.

The Bad: the problem with almost zero "story"/chr arcs is that after a few episodes I largely stopped caring about any chr. at all, which makes a lot of the long "suspense" sequences feel over drawn out or not-suspenseful and fast-forwarding commenced.

Overall: For it's genre, could be a lot worse, with some good moments/episodes to go with mediocre ones. Still bingeable even if you FFwd some. Won't change your mind about zombie stuff if you don't care at all about zombie stuff.

First episode for Game of Thrones S08 was... Alright. Lots of setup basically, and it did feel rather soapy, but sort of in line with the openings to past seasons. Oddly televisual compared to some of the most recent seasons and episodes too. Of course, for an episode that is all about setting up the rest of the season (and series for that matter), it has to deliver on hooks and boy does it have them. Even if I can't say to have thought much of this particular chapter, looking forward to next Sunday.

The Ghibli films still do it for me. Princess Mononoke especially is a wonderful film. Most anime I've seen is from 10-15 years ago, doubt I would get the same enjoyment out of it now. I recall really enjoying a series called Monster. It was about a doctor who choose to save the life of a random baby over someone important, and how he deals with the consequenses of that when the child grows up to be a serial killer.

Edit: oh thought we were still discussing anime

Edit: oh thought we were still discussing anime

There's no statue of limitations of discussion topic. :)

I'm not a huge anime person but after I enjoyed Slayers so much (via Netflix some years ago) I checked out a few more, and at this point I'll occasionally take a peek at some new ones if they seem like a topic/genre I'd like. Most of them I have no interest in but occasionally I like the light/humorous fantasy/dramas or more swords-y action. Not into mechs, macho fighting contest type animes or 99% of the typical "highschool kids ensemble" type shows. Basically, if I wouldn't like it in live-action, there's no reason I'd like it just because anime.

There is so many characters that I completely forgot about what some encounters mean.

like Sam and Daenerys. Or Daenerys and Jamie, that will happen next episode.

Also, what does it mean that Yara is going to the Iron Islands? Will something happen there? Because there is no point to send her there just to change her mind and come back later.

Edit:

Is it really a problem that Jon is who he is? He doesn't want a crown and is a man of honor, just tell Daenerys that he'll keep his word and if he marries her she will have an even stronger claim. :shrugz:

Also: the Night's Watch was kind of irrelevant. They weren't necessary to stop the White Walkers, just to prevent the Wildlings from coming earlier.
