Compressed can of Air or a leafblower

Recommended Posts

Hello,

How's it going?

I will be cleaning my laptop soon and was looking for some options. I was recommended a can of compressed air, but I can't seem to find any that have their customers satisfied fully.

I also came across that: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073F9NY1X/ref=psdc_200925031_t1_B01G1Z0RF0 and wanted to ask you if you have had any experience with this.

Any suggestions or tips would be strongly appreciated.

Thanks!

It's a can of air, there's not much to be dissatisfied about so don't put too much stock in customer reviews for air. :p

It can be misused of course so be careful to immobilise the fans so they don't move (just stick a pen to hold the blades in place) and let the can sit for a bit when it starts to freeze up.

I only use canned air from the Swiss alps. Only the freshiest air is good enough to clean my computer.

I just use the hose attachment and pointy nozzle from my floor vacuum. But that sucks instead of blows.

Normal belt vacuum cleaners run the risk of frying components from the static electricity a belt generates. And they do generate a lot of static electricity. Back at school the Van Wossname Sphere was charged by the belt from an old vacuum cleaner and that packed nearly as much kick as an electric fence.

OTOH Dyson® brand vacuum cleaners should- at least theoretically- be fine for cleaning electronics, since they us John Dyson®'s patented cyclonic® system instead of a belt.

I use the exhalations of dying slaves to clear my PC components.

Yeah I shamelessly take the side off my case and point a leafblower at it.  It works, just need to make sure you don't hold it close, and I use some blutack to immobilise my CPU fan so it doesn't get spun by the blown air.

A leafblower is a wonderful thing, especially if you have to clean your sidewalk in autumn

I use a manual plastic squeeze bulb to get the worst off (if it's been a while) then finish it with a few blasts from compressed air held some distance away.

I can't imagine using a leaf blower. I mean I'm sure it works and all, but using a leaf blower just to dust out the pc feels a bit excessive. I guess it's "free" tho, assuming you own one already. But cans of air aren't that bad and you don't need a lot. It lasts a while.

Even better is having the PC in a room where dust collection isn't very severe to begin with. And not having it rest on the floor/carpet.

Also, dustfilters in the case does help a bit, means you clean filters instead of components.

I might be entirely wrong here, but I'll blame my father for it; It should be fine to use a vacuum cleaner for cleaning your PC, just make sure that you somehow lower the air velocity. If you can lower the vacuums speed you lower the risk of discharges. I usually put it at the lowest setting and use a plastic bottle cap with a hole that I've threaded a 5mm plastic tube through.

You don't lower the static build up by much, but in reality there isn't that much chance of damaging components with static discharge- it has to be generated to sufficient charge, grounded, and grounded through a sensitive component to fry something. My previous computer I regularly used a vacuum cleaner on it, but that was 11 years old so it would have been a good excuse to actually replace it if something broke.

OTOH a standard vacuum cleaner is pretty much the same system a Van der Graaf generator (since I remembered the name, randomly) uses to make its potential difference, and that is in the kV range.
