Beast of Winter DLC Announcement

Recommended Posts

If the new content is challenging for a 20th-level party, I’ll finally get to enjoy the full extent of my power the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Being at the apex is a lot more enjoyable than the process of reaching it for me.

Some thoughts on

Rymrgand:

If Rymrgand is just as fake as the other gods, then the inevitablity of universal heat death may also be a lie.

however...

There are more gods than there are alcoves in the Engwithan god-making machine...

The Engwithan gods are representations of their cultural values turned up to 11. Iovara has a line at the end of the first game that explains this (paraphrasing her: “anything taken to an extreme becomes grotesque”). Every mythology has a creation myth and an “end of the world” myth. Rymrgand is the latter.

"Myth" being the key word here. Just because people believe it doesn't make it true. Rymrgand may well believe that his eventual victory is inevitable, but that doesn't make it true.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with Rymrgand? Entropy existed before him, it will exist long after his death (which will predate the heat death of the universe by a long time). Entropy isn't dependent on his existence, he's merely a charlatan who claims that it does.

Not necessarily true. Entropy exists in our universe, but the PoE universe appears to be a different universe, governed by different physical laws. So maybe in the PoE universe entropy is just a myth.

Everyone knows Science Fiction is really cool. You know what PoE really needs? Spaceships! There isn't any game that wouldn't be improved by a space combat minigame. Adding one to PoE would send sales skyrocketing, and ensure the game was remembered for all time!!!!!

When this comes out, I hope there will be some change made to slow down the experience points gain. But, knowing how these things tend to work, there probably won't be.

Hopefully there will be a mod that does it... or maybe it's easy enough to tweak on one's own.

Just play all multiclass instead and use a mod that gets rid of the level cap.

I enjoy both but agree that a big part of the fun of these games is actually spending some amount of time at max level and being able to use that power in some challenging fights.

I don't think that's the case here, mainly because it doesn't fit what we know or what the games have been going for.

They mention that the Engwithins found that there was only a "wheel" that slowly grinds souls away. That's very in line with entropy I think. The gradual but steady path to non-existence.

I really don't care about mods. I want to play the game, how the developers intented it (relating to difficulty).

I don't think it's probable, either. But it is possible*.

Just as it is possible that Rymrgand (or one of the other eleven) is not Engwithan.

*One workaround for entropy comes from the Doctor Who story Logopolis: Open portals to other universes and allow negative entropy to blead through.

Does Rymrgand ever claim to be the cause of entropy? He very clearly enjoys entropy, and works in the interests of advancing it along his own inscrutable timeline, but I don't think there's any indication that he pretends to be its source.

If I'm typing in red, it means I'm being sarcastic. But not this time.

Dark green, on the other hand, is for jokes and irony in general.

My mistake. I do question why they felt like adding more great swords and not something else.

I hope that's not the only new unique item the DLC brings to the table!

That said, I love swords in general and great swords in particular because—you guessed it—they look cool. Not saying other weapons can't or don't look cool; swords just happen to fit my aesthetic narrative better than others so I won't complain if they throw more in.

Though really, all I need is for them to fix the texture on the Sanguine Blade and give me a Sanguine Plate to go with it plus matching helm. Then I can be a happy red murderhobo.

Oh I love them too, and I don't mind having more, I just feel Obsidian really ought to get to a point where there are at least three unique or soulbound of each weapon type (maybe just two for the less used weapons).

I've no doubt there will be other uniques of course, I just found it funny that the one they showed in the stream was another great sword :D

are we done with the spoilers lads... :)

"Those who look upon gods then say, without even knowing their names, 'He is Fire. She is Dance. He is Destruction. She is Love.' So, to reply to your statement, they do not call themselves gods. Everyone else does, though, everyone who beholds them."
"So they play that on their fascist banjos, eh?"
"You choose the wrong adjective."
"You've already used up all the others.”

I think a lot of Gods pretend to be a little more grandiose than they really are. No doubt anyone here hasn't caught on that they put on airs. I'll be interested in seeing what Rymrgard has to say and if he's not just giving our Watchers the run around.

Yes! We have no bananas.

spoilers

I can’t believe you just used the word “spoilers”. This is supposed to be a non-spoiler forum. FFS!
