Which games have aged well in your opinion?

Fine, you lazy descendants of monkeys! I'll do it myself. ;)

Following the discussion at the E3 2018 thread, which games do you think have aged well and which ones haven't?

The ones that have aged well in my opinion:

-every single Legend of Zelda games except for Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, never liked that one.

-Fallout 1,2, Tactics

-C & C: Red Alert 1,2 <-aged well?! Pfft, I wish a single developer out there would have the guts to create something similar...

-Lucas Arts Adventure games...you know, back then when Telltale hadn't taken a huge dump on adventure games yet with their so called  'choice driven adventure games!'

-classic DOOM, Quake 1 & 2, Wolfenstein 3D(boy did I have fun replaying this on the PS3, had to collect every single Trophy!), Hexen 1& 2, Heretic 1(Yes, there was a Heretic II but nobody liked it :(  )

-pretty much every Mario Kart and Mario platformer game ever released

-Final Fight, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, TMNT: Turtles in Time, TMNT The Arcade Game and many other awesome beat em up games that I miss a lot

-Street Fighter II: Turbo, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat I, II, III

now let's get to the ugly ones...

-Syndicate  to me it felt like a real drag, don't know if you can mod the game to play any better but I tried it recently and couldn't get into it at all

-Mafia...the shooting mechanics are simply...horrid!

- Mega Man 1-6...it's just way too hard for me and there is simply nothing else there for me to appreciate.

- Resident Evil 1, 2, 3...Nocturne...Dino Crisis and a whole lot of other survival horror games from the 90's because no matter how awesome those games were, the controls(combined with the fixed camera angles) are simply bad, don't know how we got around to playing them back then but nowadays I always choose the Easy difficulty setting.

-OG Street Fighter II....once me and my brother played Turbo we couldn't go back to the classic, because it was soooooooo slllooooowwww

-Assassin's Creed games...I think this one needs no explanation at all, funny thing is that it isn't a 'classic' game buy any means.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

I think Resident Evil 1 is still holding up quite good. Especially the remake anyway. Never had that much troubles with the controls and I played on PC even.

The remake has refined controls, maybe that's why they decided to make the Resi remake a tad harder than the original.

I wonder if the devs would have gone for a over the shoulder cam back in the 90's if they had the tech we have today.

As for Mafia, the weapons have way too much kick. I didn't mind the realism at all, the driving was fun and it actually felt as if you are really driving a car, it created a sense of responsibility that felt rewarding. The shooting sections were not the same though. Recently the game reappeared on Steam so I might buy it and give it a whirl one of these days, the last time I finished the game was back in 2008.

Hard for an adventure game to age poorly, I guess the text parser ones may be more so than others but that's just the users being lazy :p even some 3D ones have aged ok for me.

Actually, no, forgot games that can get into an unwinnable state, those have not aged well.

All Infinity engine games, which allow to unlock higher resolutions even without mods.

Tales of the Abyss.

Final Fantasy VIII, IX and X.

Quake 2-4, Unreal Tournament Classic, 2003, 2004, III.

All Lucasfilm/LucasArts adventures after and including Monkey Island.

C&C Red Alert.

Warcraft II and III.

Lands of Lore I.

And many more, which do not cross my mind at the moment. :p

Edit: typo. I meant FFVIII, because FFVII aged very badly.

Technically OG Xcom hasn't aged well graphically, but I've never heard anyone say they played Xcom because of how pretty it was.

I liked replaying Realms on Amiga just for the pretty intro. Today, all I remember is that sequence, and I can't recall a thing about the game itself.

With the first Mega Man you might be right, that was still a little rough around the edges but Mega Man 2? That was one of the best games ever back then, and it still is. ;)

Fine, you lazy descendants of monkeys!

I'm getting a distinct Wing Commander vibe, here.

Which incidentally, is a game (series) that hasn't aged too badly. Provided that you can tweak DOSBox to have it run at non-breakneck speed, of course.

I only replay games I like enough to replay in spite of any possible "issues", so in that regard, "all of them."  :p

Oh yeah, I have forgotten to mention these games. It is few years back, when I was playing it, and I can agree than WC3, 4, Prophecy and Privateer 2 are still looking pretty good, despite it's age.

I bought the Mega Man Legacy Collection a while ago which has Mega Man 1-6. I'll give 2 another go someday. Maybe I'll like it this time around but as far as memory serves, I remember a lot of trial and error in thosr games which simply requires you to memorize the level layout and the enemy movements.

How old the game needs to be to be subject of aging, like 18+?

Generally 2005 when games started to look decent, Homeworld, Bloodlines, NFS MW,

With some resolution upgrade they already look fair enought.

Yeah, I'd say games that are released no sooner than 2005 or so.

Graphics not being important to good gameplay is why games don't "age" like movies do, imo.

You could have some games where the gameplay style itself becomes so outdated no one could play them anymore, like how many have difficulty with Shakespeare because of the writing/language style, but I get the feeling that wouldn't be very many yet. I mean, even Asteroids could still be fun for short bursts ... which outside of high-score obsessions are what games like that were designed for anyway.

Also this:

Many strategy games and management sims.

Many of these types are even less dependent (than some other genres) on "visual immersion" to be great fun so yeah...I'd agree.

OpenTTD is just so good. I still have my old save that I continue a little bit from time to time.

Check out my oil processing plant. There's more cool locations, but... it's too many.

X-Com3: Apocalypse has aged "decently". For me the only game to give Jagged Alliance 2 (which also carry its years "graciously") a serious run for its money and beat it in some areas (the use of terrain, especially destructible terrain as a tactical factor)
